Celtics Wrap: Kemba Walker Leads Boston To 121-110 Win Over Nets
NESN by Chris Grenham on Wed, Nov 27, 2019 at 9:36PM
The Boston Celtics took down the Brooklyn Nets 120-108 Wednesday night behind 39 points from Kemba Walker. Of course, Kyrie Irving’s absence stole the headlines entering the contest, but Boston’s new point guard quickly stole the show. Jaylen Brown (22), Jayson Tatum (16), Daniel Theis (14), Brad Wanamaker (13) and Marcus Smart (10) all finished in double figures for Boston. Garrett Temple led the way for Brooklyn with 22 points. The Celtics improved to 13-4 with the win, while the Nets moved to 9-9. Here’s how it all went down:
STARTING FIVE PG: Kemba Walker SG: Marcus Smart SF: Jaylen Brown PF: Jayson Tatum C: Daniel Theis
THEIS LEADING THE WAY The Celtics were led by their 6-foot-8 five out of the gate, as Theis was 4-of-5 with eight points and three rebounds in the game’s first six minutes. Brown posted eight first-quarter points as well, helping to pace Boston’s offense early on. He showcased some impressive post moves with very sharp foot work for two of those eight points. Boston led 30-23 after one.
NETS GET HOT Brooklyn opened the second quarter with an 11-2 run over a 90-second span thanks to a spark from Garrett Temple and David Nwaba. The Nets took advantage of Enes Kanter’s lack of defensive prowess and attacked him inside, while also improving their transition game. But the real improvement came from long range. Temple had 11 points in four second-quarter minutes early to help lead Brooklyn’s improved perimeter game. After going 2-for-11 from deep in the first quarter, the Nets opened the second frame 5-of-7 3PT. Brooklyn’s 3-point shooting didn’t slow down, as they extended that stretch to a 9-for-13 shooting clip from beyond the arc later in the quarter, helping the Nets build a 60-51 lead. The Nets ultimately hit 12 first half 3-pointers, 10 of which came in the second quarter. They shot 53.2 percent over the first 24 minutes, giving Brooklyn a 63-57 lead at the break. Temple led the visitors with 16 first-half points, but Walker’s 17 points at halftime was tops across all scorers.
KEMBA KEEPING C’s IN IT Walker’s impressive effort continued into the third, as the point guard had 21 points by the nine-minute mark of the quarter. He continued cooking, notching 13 third-quarter points midway through the frame, pushing him to 30 points on the night in just 23 minutes. Cooking may even be an understatement — he was absurd during the third quarter. He managed to keep Boston in this one, as Brooklyn’s shooting remained a tick about 50 percent for the night. The Celtics snagged the lead with just over two minutes left in the third thanks to come solid hustle plays resulting in 11 second-chance points over the 12-minute frame. Boston held the lead for the remainder of the quarter and took a 91-86 score into the fourth. Walker’s 13 third-quarter points gave him 30 points after three.
FINISHING THE JOB The Celtics extended their lead early in the fourth thanks to Wanamaker and the Boston defense created opportunities off some Brooklyn miscues. Wanamaker fourth bucket of the night gave the Celtics a 10-point lead roughly four minutes into the final frame, making it his fourth double-figure outing in Boston’s last five games. Brooklyn refused to go away, however, cutting right back into the deficit and making it a three-point game with just over five minutes to go, setting up a tight finish. Walker continued to keep the Celtics above water later, nabbing his season-high 35th point with over 2:30 left in the game. He’d be too much for the Nets, as Boston picked up its 12th win of the year.
PLAY OF THE GAME Kemba is just ridiculous.
UP NEXT The Celtics head to Brooklyn Friday for Game 2 of the home-and-home set. Tip-off from Barclays Center is set for 12 p.m. ET.

Re: POST GAME BROOKLYN NETS - HOME
Kanter had a couple of key/very timely offensive rebounds. 5 OR's. How does he do that?!! It is uncanny. I like DA's choice here.
6 Players in double figures with no GH. Kanter, Theis, Tatum and Brown with 7/8/9/10 rebounds respectively. That's definitely rebounding by committee.
Wanamaker is really setting himself up nicely. 13 solid points.
Can't complain about free throws. 21-23.
Theis and Walker showed up ready to play after being out. I'm beginning to think DA outdid himself getting Walker once he got the romance of Davis out of his head. Brilliant. This very well may be the move that gets us the championship(s) much sooner AND later vs. just possibly later. I'm sure Charlotte is scratching their heads realizing it is INDEED a flaming bag o' poo they have left. But since it is Charlotte, they will just add it with the others.
Lesson learned. You can be hot from three and you can actually shoot too many from 3-ville but eventually you will cool off. BKN served up enough bricks in the 2nd half from 3-ville to build a shopping mall after the lights out 2nd quarter. Got us the lead back. Again, we didn't panic. They didn't make the brief transition to lay ups once they quit falling. CE seems to know when to quit shooting from three and go for a quick lay up to keep teams guessing.
Bench is still hurting. 20 points out of 120. But as stated above, Wanamaker is carving out his spot as a very solid dependable option there. Once Gordon gets back that will give us two solid bench players depending on how Brad inserts him back in. Still needing one more night in/night out dependable 10+ pointer. Who's it going to be?
Any word when Gordon's coming back?! Saw he was sans his cast tonight on the sidelines. His return has to be getting close.
Constant theme? This team does not panic. Ice Water.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

P.S. Please win Friday!! Hopefully Kyrie will start tomorrow. Heat dropped a game v HOU w/o the Jimmer. Just us and TOR in 2nd and we own the TB. Time for MIL and LAL to start coughing up a few losses and get back to reality. Going to guess LAL has had the easiest schedule to date if not very close to the dubious honor. December's coming.

Re: POST GAME BROOKLYN NETS - HOME
I think it's safe to say Kemba's ok.
Jaylen with a double-double. If he's not getting double digit rebounds he's often close. He's averaging 7.4 rpg this year, which is much higher than the 4.2 he got last year and the 4.9 he got the year before that, when he was a regular starter. His ft% is at an acceptable 74%. I'd love for it to get over 80% but, for this year, I'm ecstatic with the increase over last year's 65.8%. His fg% is a career-high 48% while taking a career-high fgas/game. I watched the game last night with a friend of mine. He's a GSW fan, so we watched the Celtics and then the Dubs. He likes Brown more than Tatum (whom he thinks will never be great, but he thinks Jaylen will).
The bad news is that our bench is still bad. 13 points by Wanny in, what I thought, was a very nice game. He had that one bad game where he threw the ball to everybody except a Celtic and then his underwhelming start when Kemba was out, but last night we got his usual workmanlike effort. Other than him, though, who? Another 7 points from the rest of the bench. 3 from Semi, but he was 1-6 from the floor and 1-5 from 3. Kanter with 4. That's it. 22 minutes of play by the remaining 5 bench players for a combined 0-5 for zero points, 5 rebounds, 1 assists and 4 turnovers. This is awful. I understand all the benefits of playing the starters heavier minutes (developing rhythm, consistency, etc) but it's a long season. Injuries will continue to occur, bench players will become ad hoc starters and deep bench players will get their chances. If this is our bench, that's not good.
55 rebounds with 19 offensive ones is very, very good.
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody.

Re: POST GAME BROOKLYN NETS - HOME
Once GH comes back our quality depth off the bench increases.
I think this team will take off once our lineups are all comfortable playing with our centers. 13-4 is a very good start.
Great game by Kemba.
JB with yet another very productive showing. He is now #1 rebounding SG.
Smart has really developed his midrange game.
The more Wannamaker plays the more I like him. He is more than adequate running the offense and finding his opportunities. I was wrong about him. Real solid at both ends.
You do not get to change your mind about wanting to be a Boston Celtic. If you do that, you are pure fodder for the wrath of Celtics fan.

Wanamaker is a legit pro. Glad he is getting a chance to prove it.

He has been huge and has hit big shots that we really needed. Hope we can see Tremont Waters again soon....Shamrock1000 wrote:Wanamaker is a legit pro. Glad he is getting a chance to prove it.
