Report: Hawks' John Collins Has 'Several Issues' with Trae Young Running Offense
MIKE CHIARI
JANUARY 08, 2021
Atlanta Hawks forward John Collins reportedly voiced his issues with the manner in which the team's offense runs through guard Trae Young during a meeting Tuesday.
According to Chris Kirschner and Sam Amick of The Athletic, the meeting took place one day after the Hawks blew 15-point leads and lost back-to-back games to the Cleveland Cavaliers in New York Knicks. During the meeting, Collins reportedly said the Hawks "need to get into offensive sets more quickly and to limit all those early shot-clock attempts that leave his teammates on the outside looking in."
Collins also reportedly said he wanted to be involved in an offense with more ball movement and flow than the one that Young currently dominates.
There was reportedly no back-and-forth conversation between Collins and Young, but the latter "made it clear" to others after the meeting that he disagreed with the former's opinion.
Kirschner and Amick reached out to Collins after the fact, but he neither confirmed nor denied that the meeting took place, texting: "Trae is my brother regardless."
Since getting off to a red-hot 4-1 start this season, the talented Hawks have experienced a slide, losing each of their past three games against suspect competition in the form of the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Charlotte Hornets.
That trio may all be better than they were last season, but those are the types of teams Atlanta needs to feast on if it wants to reach the playoffs for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign.
In the Hawks' 96-91 loss to the Cavaliers, they led by 12 points at halftime. Then Atlanta blew a four-point halftime lead and an even bigger second-half lead in a 113-108 loss to New York.
Young has put up big numbers this season with 25.9 points, 8.4 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game, but they have largely been empty stats during the Hawks' slide. Meanwhile, Collins is second on the team in both scoring and rebounding with 17.9 points and 7.5 boards per game.
Collins' reported critique is Young has received dating back to his one season of college basketball at the University of Oklahoma. Young averaged 27.4 points and 8.7 assists per game for the Sooners in 2017-18, but they went on a late-season losing streak and backed their way into the NCAA men's basketball tournament before losing to Rhode Island in the first round. Ultimately, OU went just 18-14.
In Young's first two NBA seasons, the Hawks finished 29-53 and 20-47, respectively, which raises the question of whether teams can win at a high level with Young running the show. Perhaps they can, but Collins apparently believes the Hawks would benefit from getting others involved in the offense rather than allowing Young to run roughshod.

Where was this Hayward last year when we needed him 34 tonight, 44 the other night 28 last week. I guess he is making sure he is getting the ball a lot. This is a strange stat to me. He had the tools all along, yet struggled at times. I know I said I was not going to talk about him anymore but... just thinking, kind of ticks me off. Hornets are doing pretty good right now

Actually we are better off with Semi at the 4, a big at tge 6. Jaylen and zjayson getting more shots with Gordon gone, and Kemba-Marcus-Smart at guard.
4 prime scirers on a starting lineup...it didn't work so bc well for us last year. And Semi is a better defender.
I loved Gordon, but I am counting my blessings and the $34M with him gone. In the long run we will be a better team without him.

Re: This and that around the League 20-21
Our progression over the last 4 years sounds and looks a lot like rifle practice. There's the same target way down the field that we legitimately aim at every year...NBA Championship.
With Kyrie, I think we completely missed the target or just hit it on the outside edge. (Either that or the target just fell off the edge of the flat earth!)
The Gordon Hayward saga swung us back around to the other side edge but ever so slightly closer in.
This current batch of newbies along with the additions of TT and JeT and this another year of NBA experience for the J-Squares are still on the operating table but we've definitely moved into at least the second or third ring of the target. Not the bulls eye yet as that won't be known for quite a while, but we are getting there.
Keep firing Danny!!

Hayward is having a very good start for Charlotte.
He's averaging over 50%, 40%, 93% and averaging 22.5 ppg.

Could this, with a lot of luck develop into Danny's dream scenario for the otherwise unusable(at least not completely) TPE he got from Charlotte?
I would give Kemba for Collins straight up right away at this point. What kind of deal would work here where Danny can actually use this infamous TPE? (certainly not Kemba for Collins )

The bad ... Wednesday's Celtics-Magic game will be postponed, marking the third straight game the #Celtics have had pushed back. The Good? At 7-3, the C's have the best record in the East, 2nd-best overall. It's a silver lining for Green Teamers, but still ... #covidsucks
Bob
MY NOTE: Remember, this is supposed to be one of the toughest stretches of our schedule, made worse by the unavailability of Kemba and Romeo? Remember how some of us were ready to fire Brad and Danny? Well, we have the 2nd best record in the league right now without those two and more. Relax. You will be provided ample opportunity to panic when the time is right. There's no need to rush.

Vankisa, I like your reasoning, but would the Hawks let John Collins go for Kemba?
Re: This and that around the League 20-21
I heard that Young does not agree with Collins. But Collins is 100% right.
I doubt the Celtics could get him. Definitely not for Kemba. The Hawks coach needs to step up and fix this.

With Trae Young as the Hawks point guard, Atlanta would not want Kemba and his $34+m contract even if they didn’t have to give up any players.

From what little I've been able to see Hayward finally looks like the player he was pre-injury. Everyone knew that would take a couple of years. Good for him; it was hard earned.

Re: This and that around the League 20-21
The Celtics are not necessarily a better team without Hayward, just a different team where other players get an expanded role (i.e Jaylen Brown running offense up top)
I do not fault Hayward in any way for how things turned out. In Charlotte he does not have to defer to anyone. He is in fact their #1 option. Who knew that Tatum and Brown would turn into allstar level players and in he process turn Hayward into a very expensive 4th option?
We still are not clear about what transpired in negotiations with the Pacers. Did Danny over play his hand? In the end we came away with a set of steak knives and I doubt it will ever be used to bring on a player of substance. It (TPE) seems more like a tool to be used in conjunction with some other side project. The good thing is Boston has an x-date into next November. Deals always seem so simple on paper as other teams seem to do this and do that but Danny should be careful not to compromise what he has already built.

Agreed Danny has plenty of time to use that, and in a big game last night GH got injured again and couldn’t finish the game, left hip strain.

speaking of guys who seem to be snakebite with the injury bug:
Jusuf Nurkic fractures right wrist
Portland Trail Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic fractured his right wrist Thursday night during a 111-87 loss to the visiting Indiana Pacers. Nurkic could be seen holding the wrist after swiping at the ball in the third quarter, and he fell to the floor after contact under Indiana’s basket. At a timeout he went to the locker room and did not return. –
