Really good assessment.

With JD and Kabangele locked into very favorable contracts, we still have the 3 open roster spots.

Kabangele

I actually thought that Kabangele earned one of our 15 roster spots.

I loved his high energy and intensity when he was on the floor.  He just keeps moving on offense. He is not a low post center but he can score in the low post.  They played him up top in the PNR and he did a solid job setting screens and completing dribble handoffs.  His rolls to the rim were impressive.  Quick and very fluid, great timing and hands plus hops that puts him right in the 'plays above the rim category'.  Defensively he can give us rim protection and he moves his feet well enough to play in our switch 1-5 schemes.

His value was further enhanced by his ability and confidence to take and make 3 point shots from up top.  He showed that at FSU and he was a guy that I wanted Boston to draft.

I project him as a guy that can play Forward and Center.  He plays with pace at both ends of the court.  Shot 40% from deep in SL.

Davison

As we were recognizing that JD needs to work on his outside shooting, he ended his 5 game exhibition shooting 46.7% from deep.  He averaged 13 PPG and 8.2 Assist.  (30 MPG)  He is in a great situation.  There is zero pressure on him because of our PG depth.  He will be working on his shooting and decision making.   He watched some film after his 1st game and just got better and better.   He seems to be very coachable.

Thomas

After the first game I was ready to ship Thomas out of the country on a slow boat to China.  A perfect example of making an uninformed judgment on a miniscule sample size.  All Thomas did was average 13.3 PPG while shooting 52% from deep and 51% overall.  Throw in his 5.3 rebounds and I think he has made a case to be considered on our 15 man roster.  The good news is that Boston made the QO to him so he is an RFA.

Bergarin

Begarin finished summer league shooting 33% from deep.  He averaged 18.2 PPG and 5.6 rebounds plus 2.4 assists.   His defense was also solid (lead team with 1.8 Steals)  While I was in the throw him back for another year camp, I now thinks he could be on our 15 man squad.  He can get reps up in Maine which I think would be more beneficial than going back to France.  The Maine Celtics run the same system.  His shooting can get better with more reps, focus and coaching.  Improvement in his decision making can be framed around what the Celtics want him to do.  He can learn that in Maine.

Williams will not be retained because the NBA has a well established rule regarding players with the same last name.  The maximum number is 2 and they will not allow 3 Williamseis on the same team. LMAO and, smh.

Williams

He played well and is really good at passing the basketball.  He plays quicker on offense than defense and except for a few bad bounces, he has a pretty decent handle.  He is really an old school low post big man but without a physical presence.  His defense is weak.  His PNR defense was noticeably poor. I think it is related to his reaction time as he takes an extra fraction of a second to process reads.

Ryan

I would not be surprised if one of the open roster spots did not go to Matt Ryan.    He shot the ball well in 2 games.  Ryan is as much of a prospect as everyone else.

He was all over the place in college (3 different schools) and ended up shooting .363 from deep which is a solid number but not great.

However he shot 40% from deep in the G-league 2021-22 on 9.2 attempts and that is why he has a good shot at making the team.  He can score off the bounce and he is 6' 7"  He was a 50/40/90 guy in 30 G-league games.  He is an unrestricted FA so I fully expect Pat Riley to snatch him up.  It begs the question as to why Boston declined to give him the QO?  What the hell are we missing here?  Is there an issue of stability here?  Some people said when he broke down they liked him even more.  Why?  What is so special about a guy who had to get a job instead of playing NBA basketball and cries about that experience to a very surprised hoard of reporters.
