NBC Boston Has Either Lost Their Ever Loving Mind or Scal is Perpetrating and Masquerading As a Human Resources Specialist
https://awfulannouncing.com/local-networks/brian-scalabrine-eric-collins-boston-celtics-nba-playoffs.html
My Note: Trust me. Years ago this would be unheard of. But given the state of today’s broadcast Media landscape this is not too far fetched. It’s possible that NBC sent Scal on a scavenger hunt for a Broadcast partner. Possible but highly improbable.
I believe that this more like top 40 radio’s 10 most requested songs of the day that are not the most requested but instead have already been predetermined by programming. Hey but it sounds fun! I may be dead wrong but I believe that the final say on who gets to use Mike’s Mic is not up to “you know who”
If you’re interested in calling some NBA Playoff action next week, NBC Sports Boston reportedly has an opening.
On his Thursday morning SiriusXM NBA Radio show, Brian Scalabrine told co-host Frank Isola that he reached out to a few play-by-play voices, trying to get someone to join him in Atlanta for Games 3 and 4 of the Celtics first round matchup with the Hawks. In addition to his SiriusXM show, Scalabrine is the lead analyst for NBC Sports Boston’s game coverage of the Celtics.
“I’m looking for someone to add,” Scalabrine said. “So I’ve reached out to Eric Collins to do a game in Atlanta…we’re reaching out to a bunch of people to have some fun with it.”
Longtime Boston Celtics play-by-play voice Mike Gorman scaled back his work schedule this season, calling home games and only making road trips to New York and Philadelphia. The Celtics obviously knew they were going to be in the playoffs for awhile now, but the delay in naming a road play-by-play announcer may have been because they hoped Gorman would be able to make the trip.
Earlier this year, however, Gorman suffered a medical emergency that required him to undergo eye surgery. Thursday morning, Gorman joined 98.5 The Sports Hub for his weekly segment on Toucher & Rich. There, the 77-year-old broadcaster said he hasn’t received clearance to fly as traveling at high altitudes can worsen his condition.
Scalabrine’s preferred fill-in partner, Charlotte Hornets play-by-play voice Eric Collins, would be an interesting choice to replace Gorman on the road. Sports fans love their local announcers and would probably prefer to have a voice they’re familiar with on the call in Boston. But Collins is incredible, and his unmatched energy deserves the spotlight of the NBA Playoffs. Unfortunately for NBA fans, Collins calls games for the Hornets, a franchise that isn’t exactly perennial playoff contenders.
According to Chad Finn of the Boston Globe, Celtics radio voice Sean Grande is unavailable to move over to the TV side for Games 3 and 4 because of a prior commitment, but would be able to call Game 6 on NBC Sports Boston if necessary.
Here is a sample of Eric’s best calls. Personally….well I’d rather have your opinion and I keep mine to myself.

As far as I am concerned the Celtics can dump Scal and start from scratch.
If fans need to get excited when watching the Celtics play on TV, they are probably brain dead. Collins works for the Hornets so I do not see him calling Celtics games. Kemba looks good, we should resign him.

Dboss,
I can think at least of 3-4 people in the Boston Media market that would do a good job filling in PBP for the C’s. AND they’re familiar with the team and surrounding area.
Its not my network but thats the first place i’d look instead of turning it into a Star Search side show because thats exactly what this is.

This is ridiculous. I do not know how much longer Mike is going to keep a reduced schedule, but these guys should have been prepared for this/ Please God, do not put Scal and Perk on this call. They will send me over the edge. Does this mean that Grande will not be doing radio those games either??? Strange set up. Scal wants someone he can dominate that is for sure. If and when NBC gives up on the Celtics, I believe Scal will not be going along for the ride elsewhere. Celtics cannot be too happy about having them consider someone uninvolved with the team. Looks like I will be shutting my tv down for those two games for sure. kind of an insult to Eddie??? Not that I think the two of them together is a fit, but?

You’re right Rosalie.
This Star Search escapade is a little silly. A gimmick and Scal should be the last person picking anyone to execute a broadcast.
I really believe Grande going to end up replacing Mike unless he gets a better offer to go elsewhere.
I would like to think that they’re auditioning Eddie House for a spot but thats just wishful thinking on my part.
Mike being 77 is about to hang up the headphones. I don’t blame him. The cast around him and his health is good enough reason to call it a day.
I noticed he talks He talks less on his game broadcasts with Scalabrine.
He’s about had it with the circus. I’ll certainly miss him. One of the best to ever do it.

I love Mike, he has been great, but, he is slipping. I see scores wrong, players credited who had nothing to do with a play, keeping up with it all is getting harder for him. My son said he heard him say that this was his last year. If it was, I believe they would be saying something about it now and again. I wonder what will happen with the coverage for Celts if NBC drops them. They appear to be dropping announcers everytime you turn around. This gambling business is becoming too much for me, Giles is an expert at it and pushes it, so I guess he has been told to. Lots of Money there Mike has been a good soldier all these years. losing Tommy just about sealed it for him I think

When they have segments about legal betting on either the pre or post game shows I change the station. Wonder how many others are like me?

Me 3! I can’t stand those betting ad’’s. Something just doesn't seem right about it and they are killing us with them.
I don’t see NBC dropping the Celts anytime soon but they need to upgrade the talent thats for sure.
I feel bad for Mike. He such a professional and a good guy. I too have noticed some slippage but he is 77 and it doesn't help that his partner does nothing to enhance him.
Those quarter long interviews with Scal and whomever are annoying and imost of the time Mike just sits back and says very little. I get the impression he’s not happy with the way things have developed the last few years.

I love Mike too, but there is some slippage. However, I can live with the slight decline. I just can't stand Scal. I would be happy if they replaced Scal with Eddie House. Mike or Sean Grande with Eddie House is an upgrade in my opinion.

Sports gambling is legal for a couple of weeks, and the various celtics related youtubes already sponsored by gambling sites. And right near my house there's a huge sign for one at a traffic circle. It won't be me placing bets.
