As I stated in another thread, this guy is good player. He's perfect insurance if we can't sign Sam to an extension. His game is very similar to Sam's. The only concern I have is his defense. Sam is a very underrated defender. Not sure is Baylor can guard at the NBA level.

Cow,

Baylor is 6'6 1/2". Sam is 6'8". I think you got that backwards.

You're right about his left hand, but I doubt his right hand is better than Sam's.

The Baylor Scheierman Thread Empty Re: The Baylor Scheierman Thread

Post by bobheckler Thu Jun 27, 2024 11:28 am

Stuffed as I am with Humble Pie this morning I am now getting over the fact that, since it's not my money, I have no idea what Wyc and Pags are willing to pay.

We all were hoping that a big like Ware or Missi would fall to us (or even close to us!) but that always was a pipedream.  There was no chance either one of those things were going to happen.

Now that I've gotten my morning exercise in from all that backstroking I can say that I'm generally pleased with the pick.  My opinion heading into the draft last night, which seemed to be generally supported on this board, is that our priority should have been to get a back up big and, failing that (as we were fated to do) a back up wing.  Well, based upon everything I've seen and read that's who/what Baylor Scheierman is.  He is a Sam backup/replacement in the making and is, in my opinion, a much better pick than Kyle Filipkowski even though a back up big was, and probably still is, a bigger priority of ours.  With all due respect to International and all the rest of you Filipkowski Followers, his defense and physicality (or lack thereof) made me cringe.  Who knows?  Maybe he'll still be there for us tonight @ #54.  He was projected to be a lottery pick, and now he's a 2nd rounder (at best).

Scheierman is the only player in Division 1 men's history with at least 2000 points (2,233), 1000 rebounds (1256), 500 assists (580) and 300 3pt fgm (356).  So not only is he the sole owner of this stat he's over each one of those minimums by at least 10%, so he's clearing their bars easily.  I dug deeper to see what kind of competition they were playing.  Last year the Creighton BlueJays played Alabama (W), UNLV (L), Oklahoma State (), Villanova (L), Georgetown (W), Marquette (L), UConn (L).  They made it to the NCAA's Sweet Sixteen and lost to Tennessee.  The point here isn't the W-L record, it's that Creighton played some good teams, they didn't play a bunch of cupcakes.  He shot 9-22, 40.9%, from 3 in March Madness.

Looking at his college stats I see that his Offensive Rating (Points scored by the team when he is on the floor /100 possessions) last year was 118.3.  His Defensive Rating (Points given up when he is on the floor /100 possessions) was 99.5.  That's a Net Rating of +18.8 and that's pretty frippin' good. Considering the competition that Creighton played against I'll take a +18.8 as a starting point any day.

In his final year at Creighton he averaged 3.9 apg and 2.2 TOpg for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.77:1.  That's not bad for a non-point guard, not bad at all.  In a couple of years, the norm is his 3rd year, after his learning curve flattens out, he should be someone who can be trusted initiating an offense.  He has the BBIQ, he just needs to adjust to NBA speed and defenses.  He's 23 years old, he's not going to grow another couple of inches or grow into some kind of athletic monster.  He's mostly a finished product without a lot of upside left, but his age might be a plus for us because he's more NBA-ready than a 19-20 year old.  Look at Payton.  He came out a 4 year player from Oregon, played well almost from the beginning.  Got benched in his 2nd year with the arrival of Derrick and Malcolm but in his 4th year, the one that just ended in a Championship he played really well in part because he's 26 years old now.  We didn't have to turn him into a man, he already was most of the way there when we drafted him.  Baylor could be like that.  More emotionally mature.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/baylor-scheierman-1.html

Highlight films only show you the good stuff, so they should be taken with a grain of salt, but watching this highlight film the thing that first jumped out at me is just how much his shot looks like Chris Mullin's (NBA HOFer out of Saint John's and GSW).  He also plays bigger than a 6'6+" 185# player would.  More physical.  So, I looked up his NBA Combine stats and he was weighed at 201.6#.  The 185# number is obsolete, he has put on > 15# since then.  201# is still on the light side (Jaylen is 6'7", 220#) but at least he's not a toothpick.  He was measured at 6'6 1/4" in bare feet at the NBA Combine, with a 6'8 1/4" wingspan.  Ok, not alligator-armed, but ok.

Here's his Combine stats.  They're alphabetical, so scroll down to Sch...

https://www.nba.com/stats/draft/combine-anthro

Watch his stroke.  Let me know if you are seeing Chris Mullin in his mechanics like I do, or if my eyes are watching for the benefit of my heart and not my brain.  Watch how he does a pretty good job of holding his line when he drives to the rim.  That takes strength when you've got a defender actively trying to body you off it.  That's why I checked his weight.

This is a pretty eye-opening highlight film.  It makes him look really good except that it contains no defensive highlights and that concerns me.  I have his DefRtgs and all that but I'd like some visual confirmation and they didn't give me any.

Cow,

basketball-reference.com has him listed @ 6'8".

Google 'Sam Hauser height" and it says 6'7"

His profile on nba.com says he's 6'7"

He was measured at 6'6 3/4" at the 2021 NBA Combine in bare feet, 6'8" in sneakers.

Your eyes aren't looking at measuring sticks, which are being watched carefully by scouts and the NBA front office. They're looking at Sam through cameras that aren't at eye-level. If Sam is standing next to Tatum and the cameras are aiming downward Sam is going to look even shorter than he actually is.

There was a possibility that the Celtics were going to add more wing depth.

Baylor gives them that and he really does not fit the mode of a rookie that will go through the usual process of matriculation.  There is no time for that.  If he had to develop in Maine for a couple of years by the time he was ready, he would already be in his prime.

I have watched a lot of videos on him.

He has a hitch in his shot but it does not seem to hurt his accuracy.  It will be interesting to see if the Celtics want him to iron that out.  He can score from the entire perimeter.  Both corners, both sides and up top.  He does not have that first step burst of speed but he is rather crafty with the ball, and uses change of speed , direction, up fakes and step backs to score.  Dare I say, he has a little Luka in him (the spin move into a step back shot)  The videos did not focus on his defense or rebounding.  He is a solid rebounder and i suspect that he was able to average 9 per game because he is a positional rebounder and has enough strength to hold his spot.  I guess his football physical training has something to do with that.

He does not look like a replacement for Sam Hauser.  He looks more to me like an upgrade.  I love Sam and what he brings to the table.  He has turned into a surprisingly solid defender.  That took a lot of hard work and intelligence. However Sam looks more limited with the ball in his hands.  Baylor will need to learn defensive techniques.  Physically he has the tools to do that.  He actually looks a little quicker than Sam.  I believe that the Celtics will want to retain Sam because they made an investment in him and that investment has yielded dividends.  Baylor is a depth piece that can play now.  With Brissett gone and probably Svi, adding another 3 point shooter is just what the doctor ordered.

I like the pick and below is an extended highlight reel.

Why Celtics drafted Creighton’s Baylor Scheierman and what it means for Sam Hauser

When Baylor Scheierman was at Aurora High School, he was more than just a basketball player. He loved golf and baseball. The quarterback threw a Nebraska state-record 59 touchdowns his senior year to win a state title.

But he wanted to hoop. That brought him to South Dakota State and then Creighton, where he led the Blue Jays to the Sweet 16 a few months ago. Now he’s the latest member of the Boston Celtics.

Brad Stevens could have traded out of the first round. It made financial sense to do it. Most teams don’t want the 30th pick when they can get someone roughly as good on a more favorable contract a few picks later, especially with Boston’s looming luxury tax dilemma.

Yet, the Celtics sat at 30 and made their pick, bringing in a knockdown shooter who was ranked 22nd on Sam Vecenie’s The Athletic Big Board. The 6-foot-6, 202-pound Scheierman is a good fit for their system, but not just because the lefty can shoot. Boston goes after players with a distinct complementary skill that makes them more than a limited specialist.

With Scheierman, it’s his rebounding and playmaking. He averaged 9.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game at Creighton last year, while shooting 38.1 percent from deep. He not only can crash the defensive glass, but he can take the ball and run. That’s an important tenet of Boston’s scheme, that anyone can start a transition without wasting time looking for an outlet.

While he doesn’t have a lot of agility or aerial ability, he is good at picking up speed once he starts going coast to coast, with enough size to muscle up a defender who tries to pick him up at half court.

“You just got to impact the game in other ways,” he said back in December. “I feel like that’s what makes me a little different, is I can do a little bit of everything.”

He ranked 99th percentile in points per possession scoring out of the pick-and-roll, per Synergy. Scheierman still ranked 98th percentile even when adding in his passes, which is a strong indicator he can fit in this offense. He’s got a good feel for the playbook, knowing how to get to his spots and anticipate when the passing window is coming.

Maybe his greatest stat of the season was that he played all 55 minutes of a triple-overtime win at Seton Hall in January. He had a triple-double against Georgetown last season, showcasing his versatility. If he wasn’t already on Brad Stevens’ radar, he certainly was when he had 27 points and 10 rebounds at Butler in the next game. It would’ve been clear after watching a few minutes of his tape that he could jump right into a role already established on this Celtics team.

Here is Scheierman running an action Boston often uses for Sam Hauser, called Spain pick-and-roll, where he screens for the screener and pops out to the top of the arc. This play shows a lot of his strengths and weaknesses. He can be used as a screener and then run pick-and-roll. He doesn’t turn the corner going to his right against switches or have a tight enough dribble to split the gap when he attacks in space. But he can step back into a 3 and bury it if he is stuck, so he’s at least not at a dead end.

https://cdn.theathletic.com/app/uploads/2024/06/27010545/2-1.mp4?_=2

When he is attacking drop coverage, he knows how to get a defender in jail behind his back and work his way down to post without turning away from the defense. That allows him to survey the floor while still getting to a fadeaway floater.

That move was the reason Creighton was able to force overtime and advance to the Sweet 16.

https://cdn.theathletic.com/app/uploads/2024/06/27010631/7.mp4?_=3

“He has really good vision and a feel for where everybody’s at,” Creighton coach Greg McDermott told The Athletic’s CJ Moore. “He approaches passing the basketball like a quarterback, like he really does a great job of reading the defense. And then he not only puts the pass on time, but in the right place.”

The lefty wing even showed at times that he can fake going left over a screen, hit a hard cross back to his right, then work his way through the midrange to get to an open jumper. When he does go to his left hand over a screen, he can dribble through the legs to flip his hips and go into a stepback 3. While he doesn’t have the speed at this point to beat switches, he can be effective against drop coverages. It’s rare that he ever fully attacks the rim.

He’s got layers to his game that a lot of floor spacers don’t. Of course, it’s all a question of whether he can do it against NBA defenders. He’s just big enough that he should be able to.

A lot of teams passed on Scheierman because of his limitations as a creator at the NBA level, but the Celtics don’t need that. They need versatile floor spacers who can function in any role on the court. He can be in the corners and then come up into an action and make a read. He can attack closeouts and decide on the move whether to take a floater or pass it to a shooter at the weak elbow. It’s all similar to Hauser, though he is more of a creator while not being quite the elite shooter Hauser is.

So what does this mean for Hauser? He’s entering the final season of his minimum salary contract and has played well enough to merit a market if he hits free agency. He finally became an elite shooter this season and made some improvements as a decision-maker and defender. He’s the ideal guy to have at the end of your rotation.

Boston can renegotiate a new deal with him, then decline his team option for this upcoming season so he can sign a long-term deal now. But they’re about to commit somewhere around $450 million to Jayson Tatum and likely Derrick White. They’ll be so deep into the repeater tax that paying Hauser to even a team-friendly deal will cost a fortune.

Scheierman gives them a backup plan. But it should be clear that while Scheierman enters the league with a more diverse skill set, Hauser has a better touch, is taller, and has demonstrated he’s a sufficient defender to play in the NBA Finals.

Boston’s new rookie is a question mark on defense and coach Joe Mazzulla doesn’t play guys who are bad on defense. But Boston doesn’t draft players who don’t play defense and has a good track record of developing players into defenders who can handle the complicated switching scheme.

The Celtics need a young center. Someone who has enough development runway to plausibly start in a future where Kristaps Porziņģis continues to deal with injuries, Al Horford is retired, and Xavier Tillman is still 6-foot-8.

That problem has to be solved eventually, but they took care of a small but still important issue now by drafting Scheierman.

Bob
MY NOTE:  "He averaged 9.0 rebounds".  This is a stat I forgot to mention in my earlier post.  Even in college 6'6" is a wing, and he averaged 9 rpg.  That's quite impressive.

Scheierman is an OK pick in a very weak pool of players. The Celtics probably obtained the best available player, regardless of position, at the 30th spot.

He very likely is far more NBA ready than the picks from the last 3 drafts, especially considering the '21 pick never even entered the league, and should pass all three on the depth chart. His floor should be higher than Davison and Walsh, his ceiling as well. He should have the potential to quickly give a few relief minutes behind Hauser.

Scheierman competed in the Summit League and then the Big East after transferring, so he didn't play against a consistent batch of top tier talent during the regular season. In the last two NCAA tournaments, however, he showed a good offensive skillset against top teams, so that's a promising sign. At 23 and after 5 years of college ball, he's a little older and more experienced that all the 19-year olds coming out.

This will most likely turn out to be a slightly expensive (new CBA rules) but smart if unexciting pick. I would wager Baylor may even produce a couple of 'good move Brad' moments in '24 - '25.

DBoss,

I absolutely agree he has a hitch in his shot, there's that momentary pause at the top of his pre-release motion.  Chris Mullin had that exact same hitch.  He had the same shooting motion.  He'd bring the ball up, almost tee it up at the top, and then push the shot out.  I was out here in Warrior Land for most of Mullin's career and got to watch him shoot A LOT.  I always thought his motion was a mistake and he always showed me that he knew what was best for him.

Just for a point of reference for everybody, the NCAA 3pt line is 22' 1 3/4", from basket straight out to the top.  The NBA 3pt point line is 23' 9", so it's 19 1/3" further.

A foot-and-a-half is quite a bit, but watching Baylor shoot in games he often takes shots from several feet beyond his 3pt line, so I don't see much of a learning curve there.  He already has plenty of muscle memory from NBA range.

Summer League begins 7/12, 15 days from today.  They'll bring the SL roster in a few days early to practice and then it's off to Lost Wages.  I'm expecting the Celtics will start announcing who will be on their SL roster next week. Free Agency begins this Sunday, 6/30.  Brad will be following that closely, although I doubt he'll actually do anything.  The coaching staff, on the other hand, can focus on SL.

John Hollinger’s analysis:

The Celtics double down on the 3-point bonanza of a year ago by selecting a guy who took 13.3 3-point attempts per 100 possessions a year ago and made 38.1 percent of them. Scheierman is the oldest legit top-40 prospect in this draft, but he was also the best player on the court at the Hoop Summit (many top prospects didn’t play, however), and he fits Boston’s system like a glove.

Bob
MY NOTE:  13.3 3pt fgas per 100 possessions!?  Holy Cowens!  For comparison our own 3-happy superstar Jayson Tatum averaged 11.4 3pt fgas per 100 possessions last season.  "He fits Boston’s system like a glove"?  Oh yeah, Joe's gonna come to love Baylor once he learns the tricks of playing NBA defense without uber athleticism.  Payton should take Baylor under his wing.  There's another unathletic shooter who has figured it out.

Scheierman has excellent shooting fundamentals, that's his strength and why he went as high as he did.

On defense, he's behind Hauser; passing as well. I don't see him ever getting ahead of Sam on the depth chart.

Minutes he might play will be against other team's subs, so that will help with the defensive situation.

2024 NBA draft grades: How experts rate Celtics' Baylor Scheierman pick

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/2024-nba-draft-grades-experts-160902566.html

Nick Goss
Thu, June 27, 2024 at 12:09 PM EDT·1 min read

2024 NBA draft grades: How experts rate Celtics' Baylor Scheierman pick originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The Boston Celtics didn't trade the No. 30 pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft and instead selected Creighton wing Baylor Scheierman.

Scheierman averaged career highs of 18.5 points and nine rebounds per game, while also shooting 38.1 percent from 3-point range for Creighton last season.

"He can make shots, and he can defend, and he can put the ball on the floor," former Providence head coach Tim Welsh said Wednesday on NBC Sports Boston's Boston Sports Tonight. "He's smart. He's intelligent. He's played in a winning program. He is a Brad Stevens/Joe Mazzulla perfect fit."

Scheierman played five seasons in college -- three at South Dakota State and the last two at Creighton. He's a well-rounded player and more NBA-ready than several of the other guys taken in Round 1.

It's going to be hard to crack the Celtics rotation next season given the team's impressive depth, but Scheierman could have a chance based on his shooting, rebounding and basketball IQ.

What do the experts think of the Celtics' first-round pick? Here's a roundup of grades.

Baylor Scheierman is ready to be a Celtic: ‘It was an honor that they felt confident enough to pick me’

The newest Celtic wants three things: To win, to hustle, and to enjoy playing basketball.

With the 30th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics selected Creighton wing Baylor Scheierman. But before he was a Blue Jay, he was a South Dakota State Jackrabbit.

And before Boston worked him out ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft, they brought him in two years ago.

“The first time coming through, obviously, was a couple of years ago,” Scheierman said during his introductory press conference with the Celtics. “They really liked my game. Just my ability to kind of impact the game in different ways, whether that be shooting, passing, dribbling, or just my IQ. And they felt like I could get a little stronger, a little quicker, a little more explosive a couple of years ago.

“That’s kind of what I tried to improve on these last two years at Creighton, and I feel like I did that, which kind of put me in the position to be where I am right now.”

After working out with the Celtics before the 2022 NBA Draft, Scheierman got back in the lab. He transferred to Creighton in hopes of continuing his development, and that’s exactly what happened.

Scheierman’s numbers improved each year with the Jackrabbits, and while they took a dip in his first season with the Bule Jays, they jumped right back up. In his fifth and final collegiate season, Scheierman put up the best numbers of his college career.

He averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists while shooting 44.8% from the field and 38.1% from behind the three-point line.

Utilizing his previous pre-draft process as a springboard, Scheierman took full advantage of his time at Creighton to put himself into the position he’s in today.

“I think it kind of just opened up my eyes, that my first time working out, kind of just what I needed to improve on, and kind of what the NBA game was kind of all about,” Scheierman said.

“And then obviously, these last two years at Creighton kind of just really working on that, and the ability to come in this year and kind of just prove that I have grown as a player and as a person, and I think that really helped me, obviously, throughout this process and ending up getting selected.”

On draft night, with 29 picks gone, Scheierman was still waiting to hear his name. And with the NBA Draft’s new two-day format in effect, he was one selection away from having to bring his friends and family back to a second day of anticipation.

That’s when he got the call.

“I was very anxious coming towards the end of the first round,” Scheierman said. “And obviously, [I] got the phone call there while the Celtics were on the clock. And as soon as I got the phone call, I was super excited.

“Obviously, being picked by this organization that just came off an NBA championship, an organization that, obviously, doesn’t just pick anybody to come into their team, it was an honor that they felt confident enough to pick me and felt like I could come in and just impact the team in any way I can and try to help them just continue this culture that they already have set.”

Once the Celtics made their pick, Scheierman heard from his new teammates. Brad Stevens, Jayson Tatum, Al Horford, and Joe Mazulla all reached out to the rookie to welcome him to Boston.

“Last night, Brad reached out to me,” Scheierman said. “And obviously, I talked to him my first time working out there, and then obviously this past time working out there as well. Had some of the guys reach out. Jayson and Al reached out, and Coach Mazzulla as well. And that meant a lot to me.

“I’m obviously really excited to get there and meet everybody and my new teammates and really just try to be a sponge and learn from everybody and try to intake as much information as I can that will help me grow as a player in the NBA.”

And as much as Scheierman loves the brand of basketball Boston plays, he loves the way the team carries itself even more.

“I just really liked the team chemistry that they have,” he said. “Everybody plays a role, and they are really good at. It’s a team game, and they understand that, and they’re always deflecting credit to one another, and that’s how it should be. The game of basketball is obviously a team game, and obviously, they have tremendous players as well, which is why they were able to win the NBA championship.

“But the team chemistry is something that really stuck out to me, and I think that’s something that I can come in and also just add to that as well. Kind of just being a connector and just being able to impact the game in any way I can to help them win.”

Now, with the Celtics, Scheierman is hoping to translate his all-around skill set into an impactful career. He’s the only NCAA Division I basketball player ever with 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists, and 300 three-pointers. Obviously, five years of college ball helps those stats, but his well-rounded game shines through, regardless.

Fresh off a title, Boston’s rotation is fairly set. But Scheierman isn’t worried about fitting in. The newest Celtic wants to do three things: Win, hustle, and enjoy playing basketball.

“I’m a hard worker. I like to work, and I like to compete,” Scheierman said. “I like to just impact the game in any way I can. [I] like to impact winning, whether that’s diving on the floor, making threes, or blocking shots, whatever that might be. And I like to have fun while doing it.

“I think basketball, obviously, is a game that’s meant to be enjoyed, and so, when I’m out there on the court, I just like to have a lot of fun and like to compete.”

But before age, skill, and fit, the first box a prospect has to check with the Celtics is their attitude. Will they walk into the building every day and lift the energy? That was part of their success this year, that there was hardly any tension throughout the season and everyone valued doing their job. It sounds like Scheierman will fit in just fine.

“I like to work and I like to compete. I like to just impact the game in any way I can,” Scheierman said. “I like to impact winning, whether that’s diving on the floor, making 3s or blocking shots. Whatever that might be. I like to have fun while doing it. I think basketball obviously is a game that’s meant to be enjoyed.”

Baylor mentioned that he worked out for the Celtics 2 years ago.  Apparently Brad has had his eye on him for a while.  Baylor said that the Celtics gave him some advice on areas of his game that needed to improve.

He is not a replacement for Sam Hauser.  Brad said they want Sam in Boston for a long time.  While comparisons will be made they are very different players.  Sam is a pure shooter and has developed into a surprisingly solid defender.  Baylor is significantly better off the bounce than Sam.  He is  quicker than Sam.  We started to see some development from Sam off the bounce this past season but that is clearly not a strength.  Baylor will need to learn how to defend in the Celtics system.  That will be a tall order but he will have a collection of guys that will help him become a good defender.

Adding a player like Baylor is not overkill.  We need wings that can shoot.  There is room for both him and Sam to play.
