Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
cow,
Good news is, DA's got 3 spots to fill. Certainly there must be a Perk look-a-like out there that knows our system, plays great defense with a nasty demeanor will fill the lane and will take zero time to adjust, hey wait, Leon Powe just came available. Just for starters. That would be total redemption for all of us that were baffled and hurt by DA's move there.
I know he's only 6'8" and a PF but he's a big body and a banger for sure.
And that still leaves 2 more spots open.

After the initial shock I've decided to wait this out and see what Danny still has up his sleeve. One thing about Danny, he's never been sentimental. He always thought Red made a big mistake in keeping Bird's Celtics team together too long and he's not going to do the same thing. That's just not his modus operandi. But look guys, remember back to where this franchise was when Danny took over. Let's remember the heat he took for breaking up that team and getting all those rookies, some of whom still haven't figured out how to play the game (Gerald Green, anyone?) And how he parlayed a pretty pathetic team into what we now have.
I for one am going to give him a break until this all plays out.

P.S. welcome to the board Tick Tock, your first posts are pretty darned impressive.
Thanks for the welcome Berlin,
Couldn't agree more with you, we have to wait and see which buyouts Danny brings in before we can judge everything.
On a personal note, and sorry for going off topic quickly, do you live in Berlin or are you from there? I only ask because I'm German and I'm likely moving there next year and would love it if I wasn't the only Celtic fan there
Hi Tick Tock,
I've been living in Berlin for over 30 years so you won't be the only Celtic fan when you move here.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Jeff Green and Krstic can give us a nice 2nd team inside/outside combo. If you look at their shooting charts at nba.com/hotspots you see that Green is a spray hitter. He doesn't shoot that well outside, but he shoots from everywhere. Where he's most effective, shooting almost 60%, is right at the hoop. 43.5% of his shots last year were at the iron and he shot almost 60%. That's very nice. Krstic took 38.6% of his shots at the iron and hit over 60%, also very nice, but he shot over 45% from mid-range. Also very nice and a nice floor spreader when playing with Green.
None of this addresses defense, of course, but I can't see anybody who is on a team with KG who doesn't become a wild-eyed raving defensive zealot (or reduced to tears, like Baby was).

If its teachable, then this year its going to have to be a crash course. We have about 25 games left for the new guys to mesh in with the rest of the team. Thats not very much time, but with good teachers like KG and Rondo, its possible.
I am fine with waiting to see the final product that Ainge has concocted as long as there is a significant addition at the 5. He said our roster should be filled up in the next few days, so lets see who he signs. Meanwhile, we cannot affort to lose any more games on this road trip; we need to hold on to the #1 seed or we will end up making our road to the finals very very tough.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Spike,
Excellent point about what the reactions would have been if Perk had walked in return for nothing. Now, instead of nothing, we have a potential core guy for the future and a serviceable center. And possibly fewer rallies killed by Donkey.
As for the Erden/Harangody move, I'm quite sure Doc wouldn't have given them away (along with Marquis) without being pretty confident that he can use those slots wisely. I suggest you let him keep his head until we discover what happens with those slots. I think the team will need his head as they go through the process of coalescing.

So the big trade goes down, we set a new record for most posters online and I'm in a hotel having decided it was just one night and that I wouldn't need my laptop...
I'm probably just repeating things said earlier, but I don't have time to go back and read through the posts now; this shows the smarts and gamblers instinct of Danny Ainge.
At least from the looks of it (without actually playing a game) I love these deals.
Chances are Perk was the piece we could most easily part with; With Perk and Rondo on the floor we only have three guys who can shoot. We're very easy to shut down by clogging the middle.
Chances are our roadblocks on the way to #18 are Chicago, Miami and San Antonio. You don't need a banger of a center to compete with those three, you need a well-established perimeter game. Green gives us the versatility, both on offense and defense we need. A quick, mobile 3/4 who can defend; tailor made to add depth and defend the 3's we're going to see like James, Anthony and so many others. If you look at our game with Perk and Rondo on the floor, if we had to get into a 7-game series with Chicago we might have been in real trouble.
The return of West makes Robinson and Daniels expendable, of course. Picking up the future picks is an unknown but can't hurt, and we free up roster spots to work with if we find a buy-out player we like.
Perk wasn't going to be here next year anyway; not if we need to re-sign Davis and the rules of the CBA either stay the same or get more restrictive. We get value now instead of letting him walk. Green is likely a future starter when the Rondo era starts post big-3.
I'll miss Perk; he was a favorite. I'll credit Ainge though; I'll bet Red would love the way Danny seems to have sized up what's needed to get 18 right now and then took the shot. You've got b*lls Danny Ainge is the only way I can put it. And that is precisely what a champion needs to have.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Me too, NYCelt, I really loved watching this kid grow from a boy into a man in these past eight years. So much effort was put into making this kid what he is today..Think of what he looked like when he showed up here from Texas that first year. How many pounds overweight?? They have put alot of energy into teaching this kid the pro game, and now he is gone. That is one of the things I hate the most about the present sports world. No loyalty, either way. With the threat of seeing him walk away at the end of the year, why not trade????
I am willing to wait it out, see who is signed in the coming days, and then put my loyalty back where it belongs, rooting for the Boston Celtics to win #18. I actually said the same thing as you last night to dboss, with only a little more finesse.
TICKTOCK--Welcome to this forum, I am one of the only women here on the forum, but I am a long, long, long time Celtic supporter who loves the fact that Sam and his friends put this forum together a couple of years ago. We had all been BDC members, but it became a little overwhelming there and they found a way to have us all come together. Anyway, WELCOME!!!!

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
I hope no one minds that I've taken the liberty of changing the name of this thread, because Perk's departure no longer appears to be a rumor.
NYCelt, thanks for your typically reasoned take on the trades. Ever since I saw your "Danny's a genius" message, with the promise of more to come, I've been awaiting the "more to come." And you didn't disappoint.
Although I don't subscribe to it personally, I understand the many reasons behind all the angst over Perk's departure. What I think it boils down to is that very little in basketball should be viewed in a vacuum. Player evaluation should usually be done within the context of the team environment. The trade of a player should be evaluated within the context of ALL the implications for the team. Frankly, a number of the implications look pretty darned good. And we're certainly not aware of all the implications yet. It could be argued that we won't be aware of all the implications until the final draft pick acquired in the trade has been utilized (although that's probably a major stretch).
I loved your point about the fact that the Celtics' starting team has really involved only three volume scorers, although either Perk or (especially) Rondo can go off on occasion. I've mentioned Danny's expressed concerns about the offensive droughts experienced all too frequently by the Celtics, and then they proceeded to give us another example at the end of last night's game. I think that, by relying primarily on Shaq, Krystic and Davis (pending other deals) at the center position expands the offensive potential of this team.
Yes, some defense was compromised. But how often have we been concerned about defensive weaknesses (Nate, Wafer, Ray Allen, etc.), only to find that the Celtics' defensive system seems to breed a defensive ethic and is flexible enough to address weakness via the system? And who knows what the additional roster slots may produce on the defensive end?
Another thing that has been mentioned—but not all that often. We may be seeing the Celtics' future unfolding. Could Rondo, Delonte, Green, and Davis be 80% of a pretty potent starting five down the road? Add the Jack-o-lantern who now plays in Orlando, and what do you have? Potentially, the racehorse phenomenon for which some of us have been salivating for years. Potentially the first time Rondo will have been with a starting unit that could maximize the use of his best talents. Likely? Maybe not. Impossible? Maybe not.
So it seems reasonable to adopt at least a wait-and-see attitude about all of this...if not to be feel an undercurrent of excitement about the possibilities.
And thanks for mentioning the record number of board followers on the board simultaneously—41. Breaking the old record by a zillion. Wow! Congratulations all around! Perk would be honored!

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
I do agree that in the long term we got the better of the deal to this trade and agree with that point.
My thoughts are that with the current aging big 3 (with a young 4th of course) the window for winning a title is narrow and with the possibility of a lockout next year it may be even shorter for this team.
I still believe Perk is the best player for this team this year and I understood and accept the fact that he may walk. If he walked and the rest of the team was holding up title banner #18, I'd have been upset but fine with it.
If the C's lose in the playoffs due to a lack of inside Def, or an inability to rebound, well I'll still be pissed at this trade.
I also know it's a GM's job to not only look at now but down the road and with this move Danny is trying to retool on the fly, but the lack of health by the O'Neals is a legit concern and hoping that a bought out big is coming to beantown and not Chi-Orl-Mia or a western destination is a dangerous gamble. yeah it could work out, or as I mentioned before we could end up with Mikki Moore 2.0
I'm not interested in having a 'contender' for the next 5-7 years, constantly acquiring potential and youth like fans of other teams appear to be, I want to win a title and if that means sucking for 5-6 years after the title, I can live with that if it's in the cards.
It was a huge gamble by DA to change the makeup of the team like this and It's one I'm not a fan of. If it works out and the C's win the title anyways, I'll gladly eat crow.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
People have been saying the window for the real new Big Three was closing three years ago. It isn't closed yet and won't be for at least two more years. This, as usual for Danny, is a risk, a shoot from the hip attempt to make the Celtics viable DURING the transition of PP, KG, and RA to role players off the bench. Perk gets replaced by Krstic and that has to be a wash. We all loved Perk but there is a lot more going on here than what some may think. I think those who have echoed the thought that Perk would be a difficult resign are right on. Perk knew he wouldn't be paid the way he thought he should be. He has said as much. It was equally clear that Danny wasn't going to over spend for a solid defensive presence and offensive liability, especially on a team with a bench that is scoring challenged. For those who worry about Howard or someone else in the playoffs I have but one word: Shaq. A semi healthy Shaq changes everything in terms of what we might lose without Perk. Shaq coming off the bench can't be matched up with. It will be dependent on Kristic to make this a real possibility. We will not miss Nate at all. He just wasn't bringing much this year and we can't wait for him to win one or two games. The real key here, of course, is getting Jeff Green back. He was planned as the PP replacement without the trade for RA. Now we have RA, JG, and Delonte. Not a bad deal Danny. This helps us now and secures the future unless or until someone better comes along.
Luke and Semih were not going to make a real contribution this year. They could provide a body when needed, and do a passable job. Both were late second round picks so a trade of both for another second rounder really won't make much difference. This is about freeing up roster spots so let's forget that second rounder till it comes due and concentrate on who they sign to fill those spots. That is the real key to this trade.
Marquise for cash and he wasn't going to play this season again, at least not effectively? Not a bad deal. Take the money and run to the board and decide who takes that roster spot.
Troy Murphy, Marcus Camby, the return of Sheed? Lots of possibilities being bandied about. And almost evey one of them helps to make this team better than what it was yesterday. IMO, of course.

Rasheed has been quoted on a Boston television sports reporter as not being the least bit interested in coming out of retirement. This was a quote from today. I believe it probably is true, he says he gave 15 years to the NBA, he's done. So let's move on from him. I also heard that there was no way they were buying out Camby, so that leaves Murphy and Leon. I wonder about Dalembert? I can't imagine that he is going anywhere, but time will tell

Rosalie,
According to today's Sacramento Bee, Dalembert isn't going anywhere.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
It appears Murphy is one realistic possibility. Based on what little one could expect from Johnson last night he might be a keeper as an end-of-the-bench guy; 3 blocks, a few points, a rebound all while coming in cold. Looks athletic enough. We'll have an open seat or two until the playoffs anyway so why not?
I'm looking forward to the next game and the process of starting to see how all this develops and plays out. I'm really feeling more optimistic about where this team might be going right now than at any time since about mid-way through the 4th quarter of game 7 in last year's finals.
We've got to wait until Saturday at 10:30 eastern for tip off; It's too long a wait and I can't stand it! Let's play now!
And Tick Tock; welcome!

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Here's Danny, from a WEEI interview. Doc may have looked miserable during the Denver game, and probably was, but he was informed and consulted prior.
Celtics president Danny Ainge said on WEEI he and coach Doc Rivers "agonized'' over trading Kendrick Perkins.
Ainge is banking on the return of Shaquille and Jermaine O'Neal to the lineup and Jeff Green stabilizing the second unit for another championship run.
Ainge beleived Perkins was expendable because of his pending free agency and the expected return of the O'Neals.
“[Perkins] wasn’t interested in doing a contract extension,” Ainge said. “He wanted to test the market.” It was reported that the Perkins rejected a four-year $22 million offer from the team. Perkins was reportedly asking for $30 million over the same period.
"It's tough to play the O'Neals and Perk at the same time," Ainge said. “Shaq has proven to be better with our starters. We beat all of the top teams without Kendrick.”
Ainge said Jermaine "is coming along nicely" and Shaq should return in a week. "We feel good about our team."
Ainge acknowledged the deal has brought some emotion from his players.
“In time they will see the benefits for our team,'' he said.
What the Celtics are getting in Green is a versatile, experienced 24-year-old from Georgetown.
“He can play the four, three. He defends multiple positions. He can shoot the three-ball and post-up smaller guys,” Ainge said. “He has scoring, passing, intelligence, youth, energy all in one package.”
“We shed some tears today,” Ainge said after he told Perkins of his trade to Oklahoma City. “He’s a good kid and is going to a great situation.”
Today’s transactions left the Celtics with three open roster spots. Ainge said the team will aggressively fill those positions.
“We will be ready to pounce on players who will be bought out,” said Ainge, who is looking for help from outside and wing players, as well as a defender. He says guard is the least of his concerns.
“We may fill all three or just two depending on who we get,” Ainge said.
One of the things I caught, after reading the last 2 paragraphs, is that Leon's not coming back. Leon's available, has asked to come back, and he's not signed already. Danny's waiting for others.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
From a guy who has worn corporate hats and had to deal with board of directors,
Danny said GOBBELY GOOK in his statements.
1) "Perk was testing free agency next year", Ok so........you either mean his numbers that he may get, you cannot come close to matching unless crazy ...which I doubt ........and sign him if you really, really want him, or you could choose not to sign him ............which opens up a spot and you then have the option of signing someone else. Or you could sign and trade him as another option!
2) Perk wanted $30M for 4 years, Celtics offered $22M...you telling me $8M or $2M per year was going to stop you from signing a work horse center?
To me there is something else going on. Perhaps he is damaged goods and they feel his knees are going to be 1 game or 1 season shy of blowing out again. Or they want to focus on developing the next super star in Rondo and have an up tempo game to fit his speed.
If this is what Perk got, can Big Baby be fiar behind in being traded next year. Remember he wants to start and he will also be looking for big $$$$$ in 2012. We could be facing another scenario come next trading deadline next year with Baby.

I've said here several times that DA has a bit of the riverboat gambler in him and man did I understate that! This guy would draw for an inside straight before breakfast. I still think that he's gone mad but...I could be wrong, I hope he's got an Ace up his sleeve.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Thanks again to everybody welcoming me to the board, I truly feel welcome here already after being a member for only one day.
In regards to the trade, who besides Howard would Perkins have been a major asset against? I liked Perk as much as anybody but what we lose on defense with Perk we may well make up in offense with Kristic/Baby/Shaq/Buyout. Although i admit banking on the health of the O'Neal's is taking a huge risk but so was banking on Perkins to remain healthy for the remainder of this season and the future.
To Swede, your German still seems to be very good
To Berlin, the fist beer is on me when I move there

Tick Tock,
Thanks for making me lose 10 pounds. When I first read your post, I thought you were saying the Celtics were buying out Kristic/Baby/Shaq. I turned whiter than Casper the Ghost, dropped the 10 pounds (I won't go into details about the process), and finally recovered enough to say to myself, "Ask for the source, ask for the source."
Thanks to you, my wife's beating off contenders for the affections of my new svelte self.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
This excerpt from the Orlando Sentinel:
The Boston Celtics on Thursday traded away Kendrick Perkins, one of the few centers in the league who can effectively guard Dwight Howard one-on-one.
So, how did Howard react?
Publicly, at least, with a shrug of the shoulders.
Asked early this afternoon how the trade of Perkins would affect a potential Magic-Celtics playoff series, Howard responded, "Kendrick was out almost the whole season. They had the second-best record in the NBA."
Howard was referring to how well the Celtics until Perkins returned from reconstructive knee surgery. The Celtics compiled a 33-10 record before Perkins played his first game of the season on Jan. 25.
"The Celtics were pretty good with him and without him," Howard added later.
Hmm. If Howard's not licking his chops, maybe the sky isn't falling after all.
