Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Okay, in the Spirit of Sam, I bring you... the trade glimmers!
When thinking of what Green, Kristic, Murphy, and Dalembert might add to the team, rather than emphasizing their shortcomings, consider this: you're getting starter-quality players as backups. Think about that for a second. How much would you like guys like Von Wafer and Marquis Daniels as starters? Not so much? But they work out well as backups, yes? So while Green and Kristic may not be the greatest starters you've ever seen, they're darn good quality coming of the bench. I'd say the same for Murphy, Dalembert, and whoever else the C's might pick up after their contract is bought out. Getting Dalembert would be quite a coup. Don't expect much scoring, but he's a legitimate center who is a solid defender, rebounder, and shot blocker.
Glimmers anyone? I dare you.
By the way, glimmers go great with beer. [Clinking BobH's glass]

Just found this forum today and seeing the day it was I figured I'd post.
Regarding the trade, I haven't seen enough of Green to offer a fair judgment but it is exciting to have an apparently promising young player alongside Rondo to root for. I saw Kristic a little when he was with the Nets and thought he was decent (kinda reminded me of a poor man's Ilgauskas) but that was a few years back. I think it's difficult to truly judge the trade until Danny has filled the three open roster spots (please no Sheed though).
Lastly I wanna wish a huge get well soon to Jeb, here's hoping your recovery goes by in a flash and we're all celebrating number 18 in a few months.
Tick Tock,
Post #1 and a good one, welcome!
Thanks BobC, looking forward to talking Celtics with you and everyone else here.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Jeff Greene is a big plus. Marquis wasn't going to add anything to the team this year so no loss there. Danny must have someone in mind to replace Perk and Semih so he cleared up some big cap space with the departure's of Nate, Semih, Quis and Luke - I think $7.5 million. But then I don't know what Perk made vs. Kristic and Greene. Perhaps long term Perk was asking too much $ and Danny could see not how to rebuild a quality team with Perk's asking price and questionable knee, Who knows, maybe Dannny will make a play for Dwight next year?
All in all, after the Allen and Garnett trades, I've learned never to question Danny's trade judgment again... How's Leon's knee? Can he play for us?

Thanks for the welcome Jeb. I don't tend to get too emotional until playoff time, then all bets are off .
Seems like we are going to be better at guarding the Heat now and worse at guarding the Magic. The way I look at it is that even though the Magic may be better than us at the 5 our other four starters are better than theirs (barring injury) so I'm not too worried about the Magic, Lakers would be a lot tougher though.
I'm really looking forward to Saturday too and I'm also looking forward to seeing the reactions Green and Kristic get in Boston.

Thanks Sam,
I just replied in the "Game On" thread, but I again wanted to say thanks to everybody for welcoming me with open arms. It's rare to find a place where you instantly feel at home but I see I have found one of those rare places with this board. Thanks again to everybody.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Peter May's analysis of the trade from ESPN.COM. I didn't see this posted anywhere else but if it is then I'm truly sorry for a repost. He seems to like the deal for the Celts.
Here is the link for those interested and I posted the article below.
http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nba/columns/story?columnist=may_peter&id=6156222
The last time Boston Celtics president Danny Ainge and his Oklahoma City counterpart, Sam Presti, broke bread was on the night of the 2007 draft. It ended up with Ray Allen (and a draft pick that turned out to be Glen Davis) coming to Boston, which in turn convinced Kevin Garnett to come to Boston, which in turn ... well, you already know that story.
That trade was a bit of a stunner. Thursday's trade is comparatively seismic in that none of the great unwashed saw it coming. Kendrick Perkins, who worked so hard to get back on the floor this season following a devastating knee injury, is now headed to the Thunder along with Nate Robinson. Coming to Boston is the promising Jeff Green, for whom the Celtics drafted for the then-Seattle Sonics in 2007, and 7-foot center Nenad Krstic.
Guess Doc Rivers is going to have to retire the line "this starting five has never lost a playoff series while healthy."
There also were a couple more deals in which the Celtics shed Semih Erden, Luke Harangody for a 2013 second-round draft pick from Cleveland (via Minnesota) and gave up Marquis Daniels, plus cash considerations, for a protected second-round pick in the 2017 draft from Sacramento. That left the Celtics with a skeleton roster of eight for Thursday night's game in Denver and three openings (Chris Johnson's 10-day contract notwithstanding) on a potential 15-man roster. (Didn't Ainge just say he liked his team?)
So be prepared for a number of names to crop up in the upcoming week when teams start buying out players they don't want. You'll hear names such as Troy Murphy, Jason Kapono, Morris Peterson and possibly even Samuel Dalembert.
But that's another story for another day. Examining the Celtics-Thunder trade on its merits, I think Ainge has once again come out on top. (There's also a first-rounder in there, as well -- a 2012 Clippers pick.)
Let's begin with the article of faith that the team that gets the best player usually makes out the best in the trade. Green is the best player among the four. I can't imagine any general manager, including Presti, disputing that. Green is 24 years old. He was averaging 15.2 points a game, third on the Thunder behind Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. He started all 49 games he played, averaging 37 minutes per contest.
He's 6-foot-9 -- a long 6-foot-9, which means he easily fills the role as a backup to Paul Pierce. He has 3-point range. He can play the power forward spot, as well, in a smallish lineup. There are reports that he may have fallen out of favor a bit in Oklahoma City, but there was some concern as to whether the Thunder were going to be able to re-sign him, having already committed big-time to Durant and with Westbrook coming up next.
The Celtics didn't just want an Average Joe to bring in behind Pierce. They got a guy who not only can play but, assuming that he stays in Boston, will be a big part of the Celtics team that emerges when the current Big Three heads into the sunset.
But to get a player like Green, as opposed to, say, Anthony Parker, they had to give up Perkins. We all know what Perkins brings to the table. He's a great role player, a standout defensive presence in the post (and attuned to the maniacal ways of Garnett) and he's a good rebounder and decent shot-blocker.
But to listen to some my colleagues on Thursday afternoon, you'd have thought the Celtics had traded away Bill Russell. ESPN's Jalen Rose flatly declared the Celtics will not get out of the East after this deal. (There was no guarantee they would, had they done nothing.) Ric Bucher and Chris Broussard were baffled that the Celtics would give up such a key player as Perkins.
But what about what Krstic brings to the table? Or the fact that the Celtics were 33-10 this season without Perkins and only 4-3 with him as a starter? Or that the Celtics, like the Thunder with Green, faced the possibility of not being able to re-sign Perkins?
(The Celtics had offered Perkins the maximum possible extension under the current CBA, which turned out to be a little more than he already makes. Perk, rightly thinking he might make more on the open market, said no thanks.)
Krstic is not the same kind of player as Perkins, but he is a legitimate 7-footer who has six-plus years of NBA experience and knows how to play. He started all 47 games in which he appeared, with Oklahoma City going 30-17. His rebounding and shot-blocking numbers are anemic for his size, but he is an exponential upgrade offensively over Perkins. When Krstic is on the floor, his defensive guy will have to guard him. It won't be four-on-five (or even three-on-five because no one guards Rajon Rondo, either.) Rivers can leave him on the floor at the end of games because of that. Perkins rarely finished games; Big Baby is usually the one at the end.
Krstic has decent range. He can make free throws. He will be reunited with Lawrence Frank, who coached him in New Jersey when he was at his best (and who just might be the next coach of the Celtics if Rivers steps aside.) He's only 27 and, like Perkins, has bounced back from an ACL tear. Also like Perkins, Krstic's contract is up at the end of this season. So there could be some pressure on the Celtics to re-sign him.
We also have to assume that, by making this trade, Ainge is convinced that he is going to get something from the O'Neals. Shaquille O'Neal is not that far away. Jermaine O'Neal? Who knows? We also have to assume that the Celtics are, as of now, comfortable with Delonte West's situation as the backup to Rondo. Rivers never really warmed to Robinson, anyway.
Yes, it was a shocker. No, no one saw it coming. Yes, undoubtedly, more is yet to come. But if everyone can step back and examine Perkins and his game unemotionally (admittedly, that's hard, given all that he did to come back), this is a good deal for the Celtics. They got a 7-footer in return. And they got the better player in the deal.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Not having been able to check in for a couple of days I meant to take a quick peek and what do I see? All hell has broken loose.
After the initial shock I've decided to wait this out and see what Danny still has up his sleeve. One thing about Danny, he's never been sentimental. He always thought Red made a big mistake in keeping Bird's Celtics team together too long and he's not going to do the same thing. That's just not his modus operandi. But look guys, remember back to where this franchise was when Danny took over. Let's remember the heat he took for breaking up that team and getting all those rookies, some of whom still haven't figured out how to play the game (Gerald Green, anyone?) And how he parlayed a pretty pathetic team into what we now have.
I for one am going to give him a break until this all plays out.

Thanks for the welcome Berlin,
Couldn't agree more with you, we have to wait and see which buyouts Danny brings in before we can judge everything.
On a personal note, and sorry for going off topic quickly, do you live in Berlin or are you from there? I only ask because I'm German and I'm likely moving there next year and would love it if I wasn't the only Celtic fan there

Finally, someone besides Legler with some sense in the media. Great , great article. Very truthful. If DA is DA, he is planning Big 3 II as we speak without losing ground. Also seems to imply DA may be around for a while. He wants to do it it again.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
I don't think BOS or DA is worried now about ORL or MIA by this move alone. It's CHI that is going to in the ECF and be the big threat. ORL may not (probably won't) even get out of first round. If Celtics hold on to first, that means they would play ORL maybe, more than likely ATL or NYK. That puts us in the ECF. MIA ain't beatin CHI, they certianly aren't beating us. CHI vs. BOS in ECF. QED. If Celtics fall to 2 or 3, we play MIA in second round and CHI gets the cakewalk to ECF.
If Danny manages to tee us up for Big 3 II by 2012 (which will look like the "newer" MIA version of Big 3 done more with FAs come 2012 (or combo)and which is exactly what he is trying to accomplish), right next to Bill Russell's new statue in Boston, we may want to erect one for DA. All of this done without skipping a beat for the future retiring of RA, KG and PP and bringing home Banner 18 in June. You've got to be kidding me!!
If this blows up in DA's face, which it won't, he's probably outta here along with Doc at the end of the season.
I'm going to love watching this master plan unfold! It's great to be a Celtic fan!!

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
I am not one to claim the Greg Dickerson has any real basketball insight – as his sideline reports are pedestrian at best. But he was interviewed from Florida last night and made a couple of really good points on this move, particularly in Kendrick Perkins.
1) He said the Celtics knew they were not going to be able to resign Perk at the end of the season unless they highly overpaid for him.
2) He believes that the way Perk was playing the last 2 weeks – 30+ min a game – was an aberration and that he would have a few setbacks that would severally limit his court time. He said in his experience that players who have major knee surgery take a full year to get back – and so Perk was due (if he has not already started) to wear down…so if anything, we have seen the best of Perk this season already.
3) DA has heard from Shaq and JON that they will both be ready to contribute during the stretch run.
4) That they have a deal in the works to bring in some more big bodies.
5) Jeff Green is a solid young player with star potential and is someone who can match up with the Lebron’s and Carmellos of the league in both size and athleticism…which is why they made the move.
I tend to think he is right on all counts.

I just wish I could be half as happy as you. HOWEVER I do see a bigger picture and Perk might not have resigned here anyway. Also the comment made about the team that gets the BEST player wins the deal.
I like the idea of us getting perhaps a few easier baskets during the flow of the game.
Really not concerned with any particular team other than us. Will this new mix work? Is there time enough to get this bunch on the same page?
I do agree it will be interesting to watch I just hope that it will all work out for the best. Just got this big lump in my throat right now and it isn't going away!

On a side note was watching a bit of the Bull Heat game. Bosh faked getting hit by a Boozer elbow. Replays showed there were several inches from Boozers arm to Bosh's face. Even Bosh's reaction was a fraction late to make sense, Yet the foul was called..............whata friggin joke. I hope the league review the tape and does something. Better yet I hope the next guy connects with an elbow. To his credit Boozere went on and played the game of the year for him and his team won.
This from NBA.com
TURNING POINT: The emotion of the game ratcheted up when Boozer was called for an elbow foul on Bosh midway through the second quarter when replays appeared to show Boozer did not really make contact with Bosh's face.
Plus Bosh was 1 for 18 from the field!! Guess James or Wade won;t be passing him the ball again soon!
Bosh is a third yoyo wanta be.
Karma is a strange thing...................and Bosh best be looking out.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
And another thing. So what if Green or Krstic don't play great defense? No one is born knowing how to play great Celtic defense. It is all teachable. Nothing but upside.

I can't stand Bosh, hes the antithesis of Perk/Silas/Cowens.My favorite Bosh moment is Pierce dunking in his grill a season ago.Hes gonna be further exposed as Miami's problem as coaches know where to attack this teams defense.

That play last night was terrible. Several replays clearly showed Boozer raising his arm with the ball and missing Bosh's face by 2-3 inches or more. Bosh's reaction was a bit on the slow take too.......then he milked it more by going over to the traineer holding his chin................and all I cold think of was Cowens and Mike Newlin (sp)
But gotta tip my hat to Boozer.........he just went out and ate Bosh for lunch after that. wish I could find a video of the "elbow wiff"!

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Rondo and Perk were tight, so it would be interesting to get his take on the trade. Since he's a professional, expect him to say it's a business.
My take is that Danny has his heart set on a running game, one that can run other teams off the court. Both players from OKC have speed and can finish. Perk didn't, couldn't. So I'm hoping for this rare phenomenon called a fast break to take shape over the second half of the season. It won't happen overnight, but the ingredients are finally there.
Perk's had some serious injuries, the shoulder, the knee. His health isn't all that dependable. As for his defense on Howard, it's a team thing. If Howard has to run the court full speed every play, we'll see how that affects his game. Also, when Bynum came to play, he was capable of eating Perk's lunch.
If Danny had let Perk walk for naught at the end of the season, the folks who are screaming now would be calling for his head.
It's the Erdan/Harangody trade I don't get. Off with Danny's head for that one.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
I think Boozer hit him. Right elbow going down across his face and maybe hitting his nose. In addition to the Academy Award he got for that, let's focus on his biggest contribution to MIA last night...losing. Now they have two losers on that team. MIA is in deep do do. Wade can't support that much bs come playoff time. They'll exit in the first round just like last year. Shocker.

I think with his size and athleticism,Green will be a better defender at the 3 than 4 and with Rondo and our offense he will get great looks in our offense.Butt what scares me is losing Perk we lose our bully ball lockdown defensive ability that is our identity. Its a BIG gamble,Dannys gambling that the O'Neals will be there for the stretch run and playoff wars, can the O'Neal brothers stay healthy and survive that intense playoff grind?I feel better going to war with the Beast, offense comes and goes,we beat Miami last time all on defense and look at the game tape,Perk was all over the place stonewalling the Heat doing his job.Ugly bully ball is beautiful to me.
With the O'Neals coming back,I would have been thrilled to have 2 of 3 Shaq,Perk,JON back in at least every playoff game,we still were in first place in East, now were gonna have to have both O'Neals back, because in my book, only one of them back with Kristic and Greens added versatility isn't enough to stop these highpowered offenses we will see shortly in playoffs.....and with both O'Neils out even right now were a dead duck.Lebron,Dwade, D Rose,Boozer are all alot happier the Beast is gone.Maybe Danny will prove me wrong and Shaq will be back and strong and JON will mircaculously also show up.......but can they last for a 25 game playoff stretch of tough hardnosed playoff b-ball?The Beast just works and works and works in that paint,he will be missed.

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
swede thanks for the replay
They showed a little different angle last eve right after it happened and you could see space between the arm and Bosh's face. There was no contact whatsoever NONE!
Seemed Mr. Softy was worried about acting rather than shooting... 1-18 (thought that was an Interstate Highway Number not a shoting stat!)

Re: Perk Trade Actuality!
Hi,
First - welcome, TickTock.
I was really interested in the mini press-conference of DA. He didn't reveal any specifics (as expected) other than there will be some additions to the roster in the "next week or so". But the thing that I noticed and was glad to observe was his body language. DA was calm and looked confident, he didn't try to be exuberant and over optimistic which usually translate into BS.
Well... we can discuss this trade until the end of the season and beyond but, as they say, what's done is done. I only hope that all newcomers will gel with the team before the playoffs.
