Steamer withdraws from US Select Team
From Chris Forsberg - ESPN, Boston.
Celtics rookie center Greg Stiemsma officially withdrew from the 2012 USA Select team after undergoing a non-surgical process to help combat plantar fasciitis.
Stiemsma got good news late last month that he would not need surgery to heal his ailing foot, but the procedure and the rest necessary in the aftermath will prevent him from training with the national team from July 6-11 in Las Vegas.
Both Stiemsma and New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin withdrew Monday. Lin's decision was based on his contract status as a restricted free agent. Stiemsma is also a restricted free agent, but had expressed a strong desire to participate if not for the injury.
The Celtics submitted a $1.05 million qualifying offer to Stiemsma last month. He visited with the Minnesota Timberwolves this past weekend and can receive offer sheets from teams. Boston owns right of first refusal, but would likely have to use an exception in order to retain Stiemsma if another team delivered an aggressive offer.
My Note: Good! It'd be one thing if he was on the Olympic team, representing your country is a great honor, but the Select team is just a sparring partner for the Olympians. It's more important that Steamer's foot heals and, as this report says, he doesn't need surgery.

It's the smart move, but it's too bad. It could've been a great experience for him.
