Rondo Now Tied with The Cooz
Both Rondo and Mr. Basketball, Bob Cousy, have 180 double-digit assist games career.
CAVEAT: The definition and award of an assist in Cousy's day was much stricter than today.
Still, a remarkable accomplishment for a player who is still 2 months away from turning 27 years old.
One cannot diminish the greatness of Cousy, but that should not stop us from appreciating what we are being treated to on a regular basis today.

One thought that always bugged me about assists is the ones that never get counted. Example I pass the ball to you, no dribble you catch and go to lay it in and whack, you get hacked and miss the shot.
Yet you go to the line and make both. Still end up with 2 points but because of the foul no assist is awarded.
Guess it is really no different than feeding the low post, guy turns to lay in an easy shot but misses and gathers his own miss then puts it in. Original pass did set it up but due to the miss another assist doesn't count, but the offensive rebounding looks a little better.
Dimes are probably handed out a little to excessive now and much to strict in the Cousy era.

Beat,
In baseball, if the second baseman fields a grounder and throws to first ahead of the runner but the first baseman drops the ball for an error, the second baseman is still credited with an assist.
I agree that the NBA probably missed the boat by not doing something similar. But I imagine that, with the speed of the game, the sheer number of split-second judgment calls could have been overwhelming—especially back in the days when they didn't have convenient taped replays.
On the other hand, NHL hockey's a fast-paced sport (at least it was back in the days when it was actually played), and that league records a pass that leads to a scoring pass as an assist.

totally unaware of that baseball stat.... not that I didn't believe it or you but did check it out. Guess it would make sense thought the guy fielded the ball clean and made a good throw... not his fault Buckner is on first.(ouch)
And to think I have done all those baseball stats for years.......no i'm not going back to change them.
