To the best of my lay knowledge, there is one AND ONLY ONE cure for plantar fasciitis and that is rest. Other things can help, but they don't help much without rest.

KO has bowed out of playing for Team Canada this summer. That's good, that's very good. Not just because he'll be ready come November but because he has a good sense of perspective. He's putting his career first.

PF can recur, or not. Obviously I'd rather that this never popped up, but it's not necessarily a big deal longterm.

Steve.. Just to be sure, I say sit out rondo and sully.. Lets make sure they are 100% for sure when they come back..

Also, since fab melo seems to be showing us he is not the center we hoped he would become, and "fab melo" is too Kewl a name to waste, if we can have rondo rest for the whole season, mebbe we can let melo experiment as the starting point guard..

This sounds like a topic for Worcester.  I'm certain he could shed some informed light on the situation.

I did have plantar fasciitis a few years ago and if I recall the explanation correctly the plantar is simply the tissue running along the length of the bottom of the foot holding everything in place.  At the time the arches of both feet were killing me and the doctor thought it could possibly have some connection to new running shoes I was using.  The fix took just under a month and involved stretching the tissue in my feet by placing tennis balls under my arches and standing on the them.  I did it one foot at a time, standing with all my weight on the one foot so the ball would push the tissue up and stretch it.  It was painful at first but did the trick and the problem never returned.  Of course I pitched those running shoes too.

I've since heard from a yoga instructor I know that some people get so conditioned with this type of stretch that they progress from tennis balls to golf balls.  I have enough trouble with golf balls as it is so I never tried that step. Sounded like torture anyway.

NYCELT, I've got it now - painful, but getting better. The best exercise I've found is to: Stand on a stair, with your toes on and heels off the stair. Rise up as far as you can on your toes, then let your heels drop as low as you can go. Do 10 reps and repeat the sequence at least 3 timely daily. They also make a boot, or sock, to wear to bed that holds your foot with toes up to avoid that first, excruciating morning step. So glad to read your "the problem never returned," because I hope that's where I'm headed, one step at a time. Hawk

Paging Doctors NYCelt and Gyso! Paging Doctors NYCelt and Gyso.

Hawk, good luck. I have it on good authority that, when you've completed those exercises and have no more pain, you will also have morphed into a ballet dancer.

It does strengthen the feet, something I have never worked on before. I'm 64, do a few push-ups every day, but I've neglected my feet - until now. Hawk

Update, 8/24/13.

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4706593/olynyk-downplays-foot-ailment

SALEM, N.H. -- Boston Celtics rookie Kelly Olynyk said Friday that his plantar fasciitis is improving and he's working with team doctors to ensure he's on the floor for the start of training camp next month.

Olynyk joined forces with the Celtics Shamrock Foundation to host 30 children from the MSPCC for their Friday Fun Field Trip Day at Canobie Lake Park, where Olynyk rode the rides (getting soaked on the flume and Boston Tea Party with team co-owner Steve Pagliuca) and toured the park.

Before the event, he downplayed the foot ailment that prevented him from working out with the Canadian national team this summer and suggested keeping him out of action was merely precautionary.

"[The plantar fasciitis] is improving," said Olynyk. "I just have to keep working to get it better every day, doing things I can do. The [team] doctors here have been great. I just need to keep working to be ready for season."

Olynyk said the plantar fasciitis had been lingering and likely flared after the Orlando Summer League. He still spent a week around the Canadian national team hoping to bond with a young core it has put together.

"They had me in there week or so, just to be and feel a part of it and to have that chemistry and bond," said Olynyk, who noted he hopes to be part of the national team after being in the program in recent years. "I would love to [compete for Canada]. It's a real sense of pride and passion to play for your country and have your country across chest. It's something I want to do in the future."

Olynyk returned to the Boston area on Thursday and his more immediate itinerary calls for him to spend much of the next month working out here while ramping up to training camp in late September. There's also the matter of getting settled, including finding a place to live in the region.

For one day, those rookie chores took a backseat to the amusement park.

Olynyk admitted it has been a whirlwind summer, but said it peaked early when the Celtics moved up to snag him at No. 13 in June's draft. He said the draft and hosting a basketball camp where he grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia, have been the two biggest thrills of the summer.

Worcester, I let this problem worsen for months, but within weeks of beginning a concerted exercise program, it is going away. I'm just glad it didn't hit me two feet at once. As for Kelly O., I'm sure he has the best medical advice available: stretch, stretch, stretch. Hawk
