Crawford and Brooks to GS
Celtics part of three-team trade
By Jeff Goodman | ESPN.com
The Boston Celtics have traded Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks to the Golden State Warriors in a three-team deal that will send Toney Douglas to the Miami Heat and Joel Anthony and two draft picks to Boston, sources told ESPN.com.
Crawford has become expendable with the expected return of Rajon Rondo, perhaps as early as later this week. Crawford was having a career season, averaging 13.7 points and 5.7 assists in 39 games.
The Celtics announced Wednesday that they have assigned Rondo to the Maine Red Claws of the D-League in order to take part in a workout.
"Rajon is progressing terrifically in his rehab and this is the next step," Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said in a statement. "This is a brief assignment so that Rajon can participate in a workout this afternoon with the Red Claws and he will be called back up to the Celtics upon the conclusion of the workout."
The Celtics will get the seldom-used 6-foot-9 Anthony from Miami, in addition to a pair of draft picks: A future second-rounder and also a protected first-round pick acquired initially from Philadelphia that could become a second-rounder.
Douglas was averaging 3.7 points in 24 games this season in Golden State.

According to the NBA Trade Machine the reported trade, Toney Douglas for Crawford and Brooks, fails.
Former Knick Toney Douglas makes $1.6M and is an expiring contract.
Poor Crawford. He comes to Boston because Rondo is down and, just as he's about to get a chance to play with him, he's gone.

BOSTON (CBS) — Danny Ainge is making moves.
According to Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics have traded guards Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks to the Golden State Warriors as part of a three-team trade. The Celtics will receive Joel Anthony from Miami, while the Heat will receive Toney Douglas. The Celtics will also get “Philadelphia’s projected future first-round pick and a future second round pick” from Miami.
Earlier, Wojnarowski reported that Golden State was “chasing down a multi-team deal to bolster its guard depth.”
The Celtics figure to have had an excess of guards without making a move, as Rajon Rondo is likely to make his season debut this week.
A report from Peter Vecsey surfaced overnight, which said that the Celtics were close to dealing Crawford.
Crawford, 25, is averaging 13.7 points and a career-high 5.7 assists per game this season, when he’s averaging over 30 minutes per game. Brooks, 24, has seen limited playing time this year, as he’s gotten into just 10 games for Brad Stevens’ Celtics.
Douglas averaged 3.7 points in just 11 minutes per game for the Warriors.

If Philly doesn't make the playoffs in 2014 or 2015, that 1st round pick will become 2015 and 2016 2nd round picks.

Re: Crawford and Brooks to GS
So, we get a pseudo-center in Anthony, Philly's first round pick (what year?) and a Miami second round pick for Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks.
Joel Anthony makes $3.8M this year and has a player option for $3.8M for next year.
According to the NBA Trade Machine, this trade fails too.
Hmmm. "Curiouser and curiouser", said Alice.

Boston gets Philly's 2014 lottery protected 1st round pick that belongs to Miami.
It is lottery protected through 2015.
They have to take on Joel Anthony's salary for next year.

Re: Crawford and Brooks to GS
The Philly pick is lottery-protected for 2014 and 2015, as TJ says.
If Philly is in the lottery this year (a dead lock certainty) AND next year too (a distinct possibility), then that pick turns into a 2nd round pick.
SO, assuming that Philly is lottery-bound this year and next:
We get Joel Anthony and two 2nd rounders for Crawford and Brooks.
Joel Anthony is a 31 year old, 6'9", 245# PF/Center. He plays hard but has zero offensive game. Zero. NOT what we needed. We do not need another undersized center, especially one with no offense.

Exactly. Anthony and two 2nd rounders for Crawford and Brooks IF Philly is in the lottery the next 2 years.

Golden State is supposedly using a trade exception to absorb the extra salary. Salaries don't have to match that way.

Re: Crawford and Brooks to GS
Warriors make three-team trade with Celtics, Heat
By Adrian Wojnarowski
Yahoo Sports
Jordan Crawford is averaging 13.7 points and 5.7 assists this season. (USA Today)
As part of a three-team deal, the Boston Celtics have traded guards Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks to the Golden State Warriors, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Warriors will send guard Toney Douglas to the Miami Heat, and Miami sends center Joel Anthony and a future first-round pick and second-round pick to the Celtics, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Miami will send a first-round pick it owns from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Celtics, but that pick becomes two second-round picks should the Sixers miss the playoffs in 2013-14 and 2014-15. The Heat will save $11.5 million in salary and luxury tax with the unloading of Anthony's contract. Anthony has appeared in just 12 games for Miami this season, averaging a little more three minutes.
With Miami's need to re-sign LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, the franchise is focused on ways to reduce future payroll so it can move forward with all three stars under new deals.
For Golden State, this is the completion of several weeks of work to bolster the depth of its backcourt. Crawford, 25, has had a professional revival under coach Brad Stevens, learning to become more of a playmaker and less of a shoot-first guard. He is averaging 13.7 points and 5.7 assists this season.
Brooks, 24, was recently recalled by the Celtics from their Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws, where he spent five games. He appeared in 10 games for the Celtics this season, averaging a little more than seven minutes.
Boston sent Rajon Rondo to the D-League to work out with the Red Claws Wednesday afternoon. He will return immediately after the workout to Boston, clearing the way for him to make his season debut Friday night against the Lakers.
Douglas was averaging 3.7 points in 24 games in limited minutes with the Warriors this season.
The Warriors have won 11 of their past 12 games to move within a game of the Los Angeles Clippers and the Pacific Division lead.

Rapid Reaction: Another deal for C's
January, 15, 2014
JAN 15 12:45 PM ET
By Chris Forsberg | ESPNBoston.com
Rapid Reaction after the Boston Celtics completed their second three-team trade in 10 days on Wednesday:
THE NITTY GRITTY
As part of a three-team swap with Golden State and Miami, the Celtics shipped Jordan Crawford and Marshon Brooks to the Warriors and received center Joel Anthony and a pair of future draft picks, including a protected pick via Philadelphia that could be a first-rounder next year (or turns into a second-rounder after if the 76ers are in the lottery next season). The money-saving Heat receive Toney Douglas from the Warriors to complete the swap.
WHAT IT MEANS
The Celtics further unclogged their backcourt, particularly with Rajon Rondo's impending return, by flipping two players that were not part of their future for a couple future assets. The Celtics become the biggest 76ers fans in the league hoping to score a non-lottery first-round pick if they make the playoffs this season or next (as unlikely as that appears on the surface). Boston takes back the contract of Anthony, who has played only 37 minutes in 12 appearances for Miami this season. Anthony is being paid $3.8 million this season and owns a player option for next season at the same rate (one that he would seemingly be foolish not to trigger). Te 31-year-old Anthony is a seven-year veteran who has averaged 2.4 points and 3.1 rebounds over 16.4 minutes per game in his career. The bottom line with this deal is that Boston gets back some additional picks to add to its growing pile of future assets for two guys that were not going to be re-signed after the season. The trickle-down effect means more playing time for newly acquired Jerryd Bayless and backup point guard Phil Pressey.

Philly has the return of Noel to look forward too next season. He with MC Williams could do quite well.
If Noel can return healthy.......playoffs are certainly a possibility for them.

Sighs... I walk away from my computer for a couple of hours and this happens.
I could see trading one guard, but not both. Yes, Rondo is coming back, but I wouldn't go foolhardy with his minutes just yet.
And how dare Danny even remotely make a trade with Miami LOL

Not sure how you trade a 15 PPG scorer and a guy who just lit up the NBDL and played well on Monday for a washed up PF who has played a total of 32 minutes this season

Re: Crawford and Brooks to GS
The San Jose Mercury News reports this as a done deal using sources within the Warriors organization (not just repeating previous reports). They say the deal involves a trade exception by the Warriors, which makes the deal work.
http://www.mercurynews.com/warriors/ci_24917092/warriors-acquire-crawford-brooks-from-celtics
If you use a trade exception in the deal, it works in the Trade Machine.
From the Celtics point of view, they get a guy who can play center and add a couple of draft picks to their stockpile, but they lose a guy who has played a lot of minutes for them this season. Rondo is coming back, but Bayless is the guy who has to step into the void created by Crawford's departure.
From the point of view of a Warriors fan, I say thank you very much. Bench scoring is the biggest weakness they have, and I'm more than happy to evaluate Crawford as a backup shooting guard. I'm not sold on Brooks, but he can be either a 5-10 minutes a game guy or he can cheer from the bench. All the Warriors lose is Toney Douglas, who has been injured more often than not during his brief tenure with Golden State and hasn't done much of anything.
From Crawford's point of view, he should be a happy guy. He goes to a contender and has a chance to make an impact from the bench, both in his natural shooting guard role and using the skills he's acquired playing the point.

beat,
Hopin', hopin'.
Update to the deal I'm hearing is that if Philly is in the lottery next year as well, then that 1st round pick turn into TWO 2nd round picks.
SO, if Philly is in the lottery this year and next the deal would be:
Crawford and Brooks for Joel Anthony and THREE 2015 2nd round picks.
2nd Round picks have value because 2nd rounders aren't guaranteed a contract. So, giving away one of them, is like giving your trading partner salary relief (as opposed to 1st rounders who are expected to sign a contract and make the team and have a salary scale in place).
Danny's shakin' and bakin'.

I wish this could've at least been considered a salary dump but it wasn't even that... I don't know about this one. At first glance, can't say I'm too pleased with it.

Only sense I can make of this is that Danny wants to give Bayless more minutes at the point to see if he is a keeper AND someone else out there has expressed interest in Humphries or Bass, so he needs to hedge his bets with another back up PF.

MrKleen,
I don't think there can be any doubt that Bayless and even Phil Pressey are the big winners here. Pressey was on his way to Maine in a week or two if this hadn't gone down because there would have been no minutes for him here.
