Sully or Kelly?
Sully or Kelly?
Just to start a conversation, let's consider this: To get our rim protector, who we all know we need desperately, we have to give up either Sully or Kelly. Who would you rather give up?
Jared Sullinger
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/sullija01.html
/36mpg = 17.1 points, 42.9%fg%, 24.7%3ptfg%, 77.9% ft%, 10.9 rebounds, 4.4 ORBs (40.4% of TR), 2.1 assists, 2.1 TOs, .9 blocks, .6 steals
Last 10 games: 25.6mpg, 9.6ppg, 33.3% fg%, 8.1 rebs, 1.3apg, .6blks, .3stls (/36mpg = 13.5 points, 11.4 rebs, 1.8asts, .84 blks, .42stls)
Kelly Olynyk
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/olynyke01.html
/36mpg = 14.5 points, 44% fg%, 32.9% 3ptfg%, 80.5% ft%, 9.2 rebounds, 3.7 ORBs (40.2% of TR), 3.2 assists, 2.8 TOs, .8 blocks, .9 steals
Last 10 games: 22.8 mpg, 12.6ppg, 49.3% fg%, 6.6 rpg, 2.3 apg, .4 bpg, .5 spg (/36mpg = 19.9 points, 10.4 rebs, 3.6 asts, .63 blks, .79 stls)
As you can see, their numbers, when playing the same minutes, are pretty close. Sully scores a bit more, but he also shoots more (15.8 fgas/36 vs 12.4 fgas/36 for KO). Kelly's fg% is better. Almost the same ft%. Almost the same with blocks. Pretty close on rebounds and almost the same on percentage of offensive boards. Sully's playing out of position, but Kelly's a rookie and played like one offensively and defensively the first half (Sully's points/36minutes in his rookie season was 10.9pp36 vs KO's 14.5pp36). Kelly has a better assist-TO ratio and is better with steals. Both players have had good spells and slumps, with Kelly's slump being from Day 1 and continuing until a week before the All-Star game and Sully's starting when he hurt his hand. Sully can and does play 2 positions, I have seen Kelly play 3.
If you had to choose, who would you take? An undersized earth-bound leviathon that could turn into the love child of LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin Love or a toothpick with T-Rex arms who could turn into Nowitzki-lite but with better passing skills (Dirk is 2.7 assists and 1.9 TOs per 36mpg vs KO's 3.2:2.8 in his rookie season)?
Just to make it a little harder, KO's averaging 16.7ppg on 59% and 6.0 rebs in 20.6 minutes in 3 games in March while Sully has averaged 10ppg on 32% and 7.5 rebs in 25.8 minutes in 3 games in March. Kelly's doing much better, most recently and since the All-Star break, in fewer minutes.

Hi,
I voted to give up KO.
I think Sully is better player especially on defense.

I voted for Sully thinking that meant we'd KEEP Sully. OMG, is this how Bush won in 2000?

I don't know any Chads and even if I did I'd be the last person to ask if he was hung.

And you live on Florida's gulf coast. How many manatees are you on intimate terms with?

I voted Kelly.
Sullinger appears to be a legitimate building block. Kelly is more of a rotation guy.

Re: Sully or Kelly?
Bob,
Ask me again at the end of the season. At all depends on how high a ceiling Olynyk has. If we get a really dominant rim protector, rebounder and Kelly's game keeps improving by leaps and bounds (also on the defensive end) then I'd be inclined to keep him. I get the feeling that Sully's game is near its maximum but I could be wrong. I love Sully's rebounding and post play (not so much his 3 pointers) which makes this a really tough call.

Re: Sully or Kelly?
Bob, funny you should ask. Last fall I was walking the beach and came upon a pod of 9 manatees in about 30" of water - all trying to mate with one quite put upon female. They were swimming right up against my legs, putting me in danger of violating the Marine Mammals Protection Act - a felony - so I got out of the Gulf.
That said, your point is well taken, and I apologize if my attempt at humor was offensive to anyone.
