Since nobody looks at Member News anymore...

Since no one has posted on the Member News thread in three years (or presumably looked at it since then) I thought I would let everyone know with a post here about a major benefit video I just finished that is set for release tomorrow. Because of the artists I was able to get to be in it and because it's for a great cause, www.RollingStone.com wanted to show it exclusively on their website starting at 9AM tomorrow (Thursday, Nov. 3) and it will be up on YouTube at 11AM tomorrow also. While it may be presumptuous of me to think a lot of my Celtic buddies on here would care about this I still wanted to make everyone aware of it.

I've produced a fundraising music video supported by many music legends with all proceeds being given to the International Rescue Committee and Human Rights Watch to aid the refugee crisis and other victims of religious and political violence.

The video titled "We Are Not Afraid," based on a wonderful song by Nigerian reggae artist Majek Fashek, makes the statement that We Are Not Afraid to stand against the countless acts of violence, hate, discrimination and abuse witnessed globally. And we will help the victims.

For my video (which I was able to get highly acclaimed video director Kevin Godley, who has done six videos for U2, as well as ones for Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Sting, Eric Clapton and others, to direct it) I managed to convince a staggering amount of rock superstars (and Robert De Niro!) to pose for photos with signs that say NOT AFRAID and they can be seen throughout the video while song plays. I took a bunch of the photos myself in NY but many performers emailed me their pics from all over the world.

Just some of the artists who agreed to participate include Keith Richards, Robert Plant, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel, Brian Wilson, Yoko Ono, Jackson Browne, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Bonnie Raitt, Brian May, Debbie Harry, David Crosby, Chuck D, Grandmaster Flash, Donald Fagen, Joe Walsh, Chaka Khan and many others. About 200 significant artists did it, of which an incredible 48 of them are in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

The website is www.wearenotafraid.net. You can view the photos there for longer than in the video and also hear the song there today. And if people are motivated to support the refugee crisis they can buy the song ($1.29 for either the 4:40 video version or the 8:34 full length version, or $1.99 for both). The campaign's goal is to raise funds and awareness for a global humanitarian crisis that has displaced over 6 million people from their homelands. To just enjoy the video go to www.RollingStone.com after 9 AM tomorrow and YouTube after 11 AM. Rolling Stone wanted it all to themselves for the first two hours. That's an incredible honor as they virtually never do that. And they almost never show videos at all. But when you've got a benefit video that has a Beatle, a Rolling Stone, plus Robert Plant and Bruce Springsteen in it, it seems they found that hard to ignore.

And for that, and for the support from all the incredible artists who wanted to be part of my project, I am eternally grateful.

Congratulations on your endeavor Steve, we all seem to be wrapped up in our own lives these days and the Member news update page just gets lost in the shuffle. This is a shame as this was one of the things that set this site apart from other sites. We have all usually loved to hear what is going on with our mutual Celtic friends.

GREAT NEWS STEVE..........Since this is reactivated and a pulse has been discovered

Here are my updates:

I am officially retired now going on 6 months and loving it. After 34 years as a probation officer I was getting burned out.

Been subbing at my old school a couple days a week to keep myself a little busy.
Last week was interesting doing elementary school PE

Tried to play Red rover with Kindergarteners and discovered most all of them are colored challenged.....then there was the little first grader who, came up to me and said, "Mary called me stupid." I asked him which one is Mary as I didn't know any names. He pointed to a little girl standing right there. So I asked Mary " Did you say that?" Her reply with out hesitation..."Well he is!"

Also been trying to loose some weight and get in better shape. there is an event I will note later that I want to be under 200 LBS for next year. Been running some and eating less, and ran a 8:24 mile a day ago. May not seem like much but a couple months ago the thought of doing that would have been a nightmare. Was 265 a little over a year ago now i'm about 222. So i'm getting there. Promised a friend I will do a 5K road race with him next year and do not want to embarrass myself. Just really want to finish without walking...............and with a pulse.

Brenda is loving her new job at school being the Sec to the Superintendent a job she has longed for, for years.........the lady that had that job finally retired at the age of 77.

Marcus continues his senior year at Syracuse and his work with the women's basketball team that made the NCAA championship game last year. With his internship in Chicago ( with the WNBA team there) this summer he has brought a trove of information and ideas regarding practices and stat-keeping and videoing both practices and games. He spends his free time camped out in the SU video room in the Melo Center. been on the Deans list every semester so far...who knows where it will all lead too.

And finally my daughter Sarah is engaged and will be getting hitched next September (this is the event I alluded too). Promised her I will be under 200 and fully expect to be that if not lower. She has a great job with AT&T and is the assistant manager at the local store. Her fiance Zach just started his new job on Monday. He had been the IT guru at a local business called Car Freshener ( those little tree air fresheners that hang from your rear view mirror) But he didn't like it much and was bored plus hated his boss. SO on advice from a friend that was leaving his job and told Zach he ought to apply........so he did. Now he is head IT person at a local engineering firm Bernier and Carr (And he has done so without a college degree of any kind!). They bought a house 2 years ago and live about 20 miles away. And they have a great dog, a golden retriever named Riley, he's my avitar photo with his Celtics ball !!

So things are going pretty good.

You guys are busy as can be. Me?? Taking it easy, trying to stay out of the hospital!! My Mom has been quite sick since July, she is now in a long term care facility, she can never go home again and it is so depressing for her, she turned 96 in September, has a sister 95 and a baby brother 82 years old. So we spend a lot of time with her.

The golden years, haha. Beat, wonderful news about your daughter, my kids have no intention of getting married. My daughter is too busy with her career, she is a social worker who worked in substance abuse, but finally got burned out. She is now teaching Yoga and working toward starting her own practice in Wellness. The kid? He is working for Peet's coffee in management. So, we have to sit back and
Just enjoy everyone else's grandkids since we have none!!

Life goes on. As long as I get up and put my two feet on the floor everyday it is a good day.

I'm glad it is finally done! I know you've been working like a sled dog on this project for a long time, like a year-and-a-half. It's a shame my pic won't be in it but at least I lost to Keith Richards. Very Happy

Wanted to mention that we just released the full-length (8:34) version of our We Are Not Afraid refugee benefit video. Last month, Kevin Godley, the director I brought in, chose to make his video from the 4:40 radio edit and I always intended to make a longer one as well, utilizing the whole song and to be able to have the great photos seen for a longer duration.

I invited a few special artists to be included in this one who hadn't yet participated and Bono took me up on my invitation last week after he saw we added Jane Goodall. Seeing that one got him to do it. Very happy he's onboard now. Too bad he didn't get in the earlier one but at least he's finally part of the campaign and made it into this video. He's obviously a huge addition to this campaign and his involvement will bring much more attention to the terrific organizations doing such great work that all the proceeds are going to.
