The Terry Rozier era in Boston will officially come to an end, but it appears to be part of a plan to bring Kemba Walker to Boston.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Rozier is getting a three-year, $58 million deal with the Hornets.

The starting salary for a deal like that is likely in the $18.4 million range, which is within the necessary range for a sign-and-trade scenario to bring back Walker.

Boston could have cleared the cap space alone to sign Walker to a max contract, but that would have required Boston to renounce the rights to all of their free agents, leaving them only with a $4.7 million room mid-level exception with which to pursue other free agents.

By executing a sign-and-trade, Boston will be able to hold on to other key elements of their roster and roster-building tools, up to possibly keeping Al Horford and a full, $9 million mid-level exception.

One key element to keep in mind, though, is that by receiving a signed-and-traded player, both the Celtics and Hornets will be hard capped at what’s known “the apron.” That’s a number about $6 million above the tax line, so Boston’s payroll wouldn’t be able to exceed approximately $138.9 million under any circumstances.

However it shakes out, this move will give Boston more roster-building options than the outright signing. It’s very likely there are other moves necessary to complete Boston’s plan, so this is probably just the first step in a bigger plan.

So even if we dont bring back Al I'm thinking another deal like this is possible with him?

A big in that price range with the full mle and I think we can be right back in the conversation for title contenders

Congratulations to Terry. This could be a great opportunity for him. Never bought into the "Terry is the real problem" posts that pop up every now and then.

Great move by Ainge!! Kevin Smith tweeted this was part of a plan to bring back Al, but Bulpett just shot that rumor down. Regardless, it will be easier to sign a good player for 10 million than it would be for 5 million.

I feel good about next year. Let the media get their panties in a knot thinking about the Lakers next year and Brooklyn the year after. Lot of shaky assumptions in those prognostications of impending dynasties. Kemba is a great player with a lot of heart. I predict he will win over Boston fans and media. JT, JB, and Marcus will all be a year older, and still on the positive sides of their career arcs. The Time Lord will have a chance to bend the space-time continuum on a more regular basis, we can still sign a decent big even if Al slips away, and Brad Stevens will have a locker room more suited to his basketball wizardry.

I'm still hopeful Horford can end up back here myself.

Hornets Hit Panic Button in Acquiring Terry Rozier From Celtics

https://sports.yahoo.com/hornets-hit-panic-button-acquiring-233532168.html

The Hornets are filling the Kemba Walker-sized hole in their backcourt by acquiring Terry Rozier in a sign-and-trade with the Celtics, according to multiple reports. As part of the deal, Rozier has agreed to a three-year, $58 million contract with Charlotte. As a backup to Kyrie Irving, Rozier averaged 9.0 points, 2.3 assists, and 3.9 rebounds in 22.7 minutes per game for Boston last season.

This is...an interesting move for Charlotte. The Hornets are basically doubling down on their mistake of not trading Walker during the season by bringing in a high-priced guard to replace him. What’s the use of paying Rozier nearly $20 million a season for three years if the plan is to tank anyway? If the Hornets are serious about a rebuild, now was the time to get rid of big money instead of adding another solidly sized deal to a roster already filled with high-priced veterans.

Rozier just doesn’t really fit in with a rebuild like this one. Scary Terry made it obvious after last season he wanted more shots and a bigger role. He could get that in Charlotte, but it would come at the cost of handing over the keys of the team to the draft picks in place, namely Malik Monk, Miles Bridges, and P.J. Washington.

This move screams panic after the Hornets lowballed Walker and let Lamb walk. At that juncture, Charlotte’s best bet would have likely been standing pat and going forward full force with a youth movement. Rozier doesn’t prevent that necessarily, but he’ll command the ball on a team that should realistically be focused on bottoming out and shedding salary as opposed to taking on such an expensive—and unproven—player.

The Hornets are obviously banking on Rozier finding the form he had two seasons ago, when he excelled in the absence of Irving. He was also surrounded by much more talent in that situation. If Rozier can somehow recreate his 2018 playoffs, this is a fine deal for Charlotte, but even then it doesn’t really help them rebuild the roster. Ultimately, this is a costly move for a team with an already expensive roster that has limited long-term upside. The first few hours of free agency haven’t exactly been kind to the Hornets.

Grade: D+

Jordan is an idiot for giving him 18 mill, at 10-12 a year, maybe.

No one is giving Rozier more than 12 and Jordan’s gonna give him 18 a year for 3 years....what an utter moron!!!

I posted this but didn't even have time to read it before running out the door to the airport.

It's amazing how someone can be the most amazing player ever and then become the worst GM ever.

Convincing Walker to come to Boston was Danny turning the lemon Kyrie trade into lemonade.  Convincing Jordan to take Rozier @ $18M/year in a sign-and-trade and create the cap space to sign someone of quality (Horford?) is turning Kyrie's lemon into a Hard Lemon Drop (vodka and Mike's hard lemonade, in a freezer-cold martini glass if you don't mind).  Will Danny even have to give up a draft pick so it doesn't look like MJ agreed to a straight-up. All-Star-for-a-bench-player deal?
