Celtics Wrap: Warriors Outshine Boston In Fourth To Even NBA Finals

NESN by Sean T. McGuire

BOSTON — The Boston Celtics, as they have throughout their postseason run, blew a perfect opportunity by allowing the Warriors to split the two games at TD Garden as Golden State claimed a X victory in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday.

The Warriors regained home-court advantage by tying up the best-of-seven series 2-all, and thus turned it into a best-of-three with two games in Golden State.

ONE BIG TAKEAWAY
The Celtics stopped relying on their bread and butter when it mattered most, and got cold from the floor in the final minutes. Al Horford’s 3-pointer, which made it a one-possession game with 1:32 left, was Boston’s long field goal during the final 5:18.

The Celtics allowed the Warriors to outscore them by six points in the final six minutes of the third quarter and by 14 in the final 7:32 of the fourth. The Celtics held a 90-86 lead after a pair of hard-earned buckets by Jaylen Brown, but a 11-3 run by the Steph Curry and the Warriors erased that and gave Golden State a 97-94 lead with 3:21 left.

Boston could have had a much easier on itself if not for committing 10 first-half turnovers, which led to 12 points on the other end for the Warriors. Boston held a 54-49 lead at the break. Tatum was plagued by turnovers again, recording six of the team’s 16 turnovers. Ime Udoka has stressed how 15 turnovers is the magic number for the Celtics when it comes to wins and losses, and it proved that way again Friday.

STARS OF THE GAME
— Jayson Tatum was plagued by turnovers, but recorded a double-double on a team-high 23 points (8-for-23) with 11 rebounds, six assists and three blocks.

— Andrew Wiggins provided the Warriors their much-needed second scorer while locking up on the defensive end. Wiggins finished with a double-double of 17 points (7-for-17 from the field) and 15 rebounds (three offensive) en route to a game-high plus-15 rating. Wiggins scored 11 first-half points to keep the Warriors in it.

WAGER WATCH
One bettor at Caesars Sportsbook placed $400 on Draymond Green not to record a triple-double in Game 4. The bettor made himself a cool $6.67 richer — yes, as in six dollars — as Green did not convert. Green, who continued to have chants aimed at him by those at TD Garden, finished with two points (1-for-7) to go along with nine rebounds, eight assists and two turnovers.

UP NEXT
The NBA Finals shifts to Golden State for Game 5 at Chase Center. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. ET on Monday.

Stars of the game.................Jason Tatum!  Mr. First Team all NBA! 6 TO but I counted 8, plus a save and a pass right to a free player under the basket for a score.  Brown by far is the complete ball player.

IME , not putting Rob Williams in to protect the basket and allowing others to try and double team Curry.  Where was Grant Williams?   He would have given you some 3 point options.

Bottom line we had this game, they were not shooting well....between TO's that lead to scores, NOT moving the ball quickly so they could not set up THEIR D quicklY, not pounding the paint but rather setting for 3 point shots many of which were contested.

ONE LAST IRRITANT, THIS IS THE NBA FINALS FOR ALL THE MARBLES, ENOUGH OF TATUM'S SON CLINGING TO HIM DURING WARM UPS AND THE ANTHUM. TATUM NEEDS TO GET HIS HEAD STRAIGHTEN OUT AND GET INTO A ZONE AND FOCUS A-LA KG!   THERE IS NO PLACE FOR HIS SON TO BE ON THE FLOOR IN PREGAME WARM- UP! THAT IS ON IME!  OTHERWISE PERHAPS TATUM SHOULD TAKE A SEAT AND WATCH THE GAME WITH HIS SON. HE CLEARLY IS NOT MAKING ALL NBA FIRST TEAM BASKETBALL DECISIONS WHILE ON THE COURT AND HANDLING THE BALL.

Just so disappointing! Young guys just not understanding the moment and the focus and grit that it takes.

They should play better in Game 5. We shall see.

GWill has been taken out of the game by the Warriors. PP was quite ineffective as well. It is too late to roll the dice but I am wondering if Udoka should try Nesmith for a couple on mins. in Game 5. See how it goes.

112288 Agree!! I was wondering where Rob was as well.
As far as Mr. First team, he needs to bring it like he really wants it. Maybe he’s just happy to be here. Cant blame the Coach when his Stars don't have the stones to take over ala Curry. I expect more out of Tatum and we should. Get busy young man. Time is running out. He’s not a kid anymore and I don't want to hear that he has a lot to learn. He’ been to 4 ECF and as he says “I’ve been playing basketball all my life”. So start being consistent and show that your first team.
Also, Ive commented about Deuce on numerous occasions. This ain’t Romper Room and he doesn’t belong on the floor. It stopped being cute a few years ago. Sitcho ass down or stay home and watch your pappy on TV like everyone else.

KTRON

Glad we agree on those important points.

On Tatum, he has no step back shot like Brown who copied the master Paul Pierce. In addition Tatum is horrible at finishing at the rim. He missed 4 makable layups because he has no clue to use the backboard as his friend. Brown made an incredible layup in the closing minutes because he know how to use the backboard and as soft hands.

On court decisions by Tatum also are poor. He tried to make an east/west pass to the opposite side and got picked off. Tommy was big on not passing east/west. Rather come up to the key where you have 2 options not one - left/ right.

Tatum is not polished complete player and I hope someone can work with him on his deficiencies this summer - ball protection and finishing at the rim using the backboard, step back shot in the paint, and better on court decision making. I will add, his 3 point shot is gone as well. He is doing something wrong to be this inconsistent.

Also, loose the kid while preparing for a game! Get your priorities straight and focus on how you are going to play!

I thought Tatum sucked in game four. He shot poorly overall, couldn't finish at the rim, and committed too many turnovers. Unless his shoulder injury is worse than advertised he has no excuse for stinking up the Garden. He is better than this.

Look at it this way; everyone should have seen a loss coming.

It fits the one up one down pattern we’ve seen since the Bucks series started.

Sometimes it’s not worth the over analysis and amateur psychology we tend to put on the game. We’re firing a bunch of wild guesses out there that no one has any idea about. None. Zero.

So I’ll go with the pattern. Simple. We win game 5, lose game 6, and win the title game 7.

Now everyone can chill. It’s all set.

We shot 40%.  We shot 40% overall and 40% from 3 and 40% from 2.  Our 3pt shooting was fine.  Our 34 3pt fgas out of 85 total fgas (40%) is about par for the course in today's NBA.  The problem is one two many "40s" and, clearly, it was out shooting from close.  We're the bigger team.  We should be shooting better inside, certainly better than the smaller team.  The Dubs shot 52% from 2.

It's hard for any team to win when Steph is shooting like that.  43 points on 14-26, 7-14 from 3, on one good ankle is how MVPs play in must-win games.  8-23 and 6 turnovers isn't.

And a lot of Tatum's turnovers were him being sloppy or slow.  He holds the ball too long.  In crunch time Marcus Smart was deferring to Tatum, giving him the ball and letting him run the offense.  You asked to be the starting point guard didn't you, Marcus?  Great.  Then be it.  Demand the ball, direct the offense.

They were more physical than us. There's no excuse for that at home. Period.

The Forsberg tweet, 2-12 and a turnover is what killed us.  Two blown layups and a missed 2.  9 of those 12 were 3s, two were made.  We shot 22% from 3 and oh-fer-3 from 2.  The shot mix, alone, is upside down.  It is way too 3-happy and, for most of this period, we weren't desperate for those extra points.  We just needed to put the ball in the hoop and get some stops.

I have to put some of the blame from this loss on Ime.  He's the one who is deciding to run the offense through Tatum.  He's the one who's not calling plays that go inside more.  He's the one who didn't realize that, when Steph (or Klay) is in his zone you must get the ball out of his hands.  Force Looney or Green or even Wiggins to beat you.  We didn't do that.  We kept letting Steph and Klay come off screens to their right and didn't get right up on their right hands.  Double Steph.  Make him pass out over a big but do not let him throw the ball up at the rim when he's as unconscious as he was last night.  It'll go in.  In horizontal, in mid-air, flying backwards with his feet up like an old TV rabbit ear antenna, it'll go in.

I think the question of whether Steph's ankle is ok got answered too.

Ok, so it's 2-2.  It's a 2-out-of-3 series with 2 in the Chase Center and we're a very good playoff road team who has not lost two in a row, neither at home or away or any combination of the two, the entire playoffs.  This game was far more important to them than us, but Game 5 is big for both of us. If we want to be Champions, and deserve to be that, how we respond in Game 5 will be the bellweather.

No one (at least not me) is saying he’s a problem and his presence is taking away from Jayson’s focus.
That’s not the point. He doesn’t belong on to the court during a game. Period.
It’s not little league or pee wee football. The NBA is a business and Deuce doesn’t belong on the floor during a game. I don’t understand why this narrative has gone beyond what’s appropriate in a professional environment.
That’s my issue. Of course he’s not mucking up the game and effecting the results. He just doesn’t belong there.

He sure doesn’t look first team all NBA in any games so far in this series. Tired of his lame “I have to be better” how about not being so dumb with lazy pathetic passses!!! Also notice many times he’s one on one in midrange area with a 6’3”-6’4” guy on him and he can’t even get a score on him, not a good time for your game to be falling short. Where’s the big game player from a year or 2 ago that used to kill teams and best defenders?

The media has major input as to who is First, second and third team. They shouldn’t but they do. As much as I like Tatum and what he’s capable of, he’s not a first team All NBA player. He’s proven that. He’s hit big shots at the end of games but do didn’t RJ Barrett and the Jordan Poole types. As you said its about taking charge and being THE guy down the stretch. So far he’s been hit or miss.

We were 0.1 secs slower than them. There were instances where, with a little more grit, we would got a defensive rebound. But we didn’t. Then, we did not deploy any post up threat. No off ball action to get switches and post up.

RWill getting tangled up and limping again did not help. That happened to him in Games 2 and 4.

This one was close and it hurts to lose this because we had it despite inspired play by the Warriors.

Ime shares some blame for not being able to figure out adjustments faster. This game, some of it is on him too.
