NBA Rumors: Here’s When Celtics First Considered Trading Jaylen Brown
Brown's future in Boston is up in the air

NESN by Adam London

Jaylen Brown seemingly has heard his name pop up in NBA trade rumors ever since he put on a Celtics uniform back in 2016.

But Boston’s willingness to actually move the star guard is a different story.

According to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer, the Celtics didn’t float Brown to the San Antonio Spurs when they made a run at Kawhi Leonard back in 2018. Boston appeared to be in the mix for Anthony Davis a year later, but the C’s only “internally deliberated” including Brown in haul to send to New Orleans, per Fischer.

It wasn’t until this past season when the Celtics were flirting with disaster that the organization truly began considering the value of moving off of Brown.

“When Boston stumbled to 23-24 in January, team personnel only began to consider the possible returns from parting with Brown this offseason, sources said, to better optimize the Celtics’ contending window starring Jayson Tatum,” Fischer wrote in a column published Tuesday. “The Celtics did not seriously entertain any inquiries for Brown ahead of the February trade deadline, sources said.”

The C’s probably were assessing a potential Brown trade from a general viewpoint at that January juncture. Ideas appear to have come more into focus since the turn of the new league year, as Boston reportedly is willing to include Brown in a trade package to acquire Kevin Durant from the Brooklyn Nets.

Of course, Brown shouldn’t feel slighted by his inclusion in the reported trade offer. The 25-year-old is turning into one of the NBA’s better two-way players and as the Celtics look ahead, they might not feel confident in their chances to re-sign him in two years.

So, in other words, when we were looking like a complete bust in December and January Brad and Wyc thought about whether we should take a major detour on the road to 18.  Duh.  They'd be negligent if they didn't.

But now?  After we pulled our arses out of our buttholes and came within 2 wins of beating The Dynasty of the past decade for 18?

The question about what to do if Jaylen wants a max contract, or something close to it, in 2 years is a legitimate point of discussion, but Pat Riley seems to be able to pay Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo >$35M/year each, the Bucks pay Giannis >40M and Middleton $35M, Brooklyn pays KD and Diarrhea Breath big bucks as does Philly with Embiid, Harden and Tobias Harris.  You gotta pay to get the talent you need to compete, and don't forget that 2 years from now when Jaylen is due Al Horford will be off the books.

I'm hoping these Jaylen-for-KD rumors are just from the bad ol' days when we were struggling and Brooklyn was being looked at as the odds on favorite to win the Championship, but now the shoe's on the other foot.  They're the ones looking for an off ramp and we're in the passing lane.

On July 15, 2022 ESPN reporter Zach Lowe wrote that there had been “no substantive trade talks” that included JB for Durant by the Celtics. Now, just 10 days later, according to other reporters from ESPN potentially “old offers” that included JB are out there. These are contradictory reports — only on version is true if indeed the trade talk is “old”. If the trade talk is very recent then they are not contradictory and if accurate things picked up quite a lot very recently. Fascinating to me, this all shows how the NBA execs use the reporters to try to manipulate perceptions.

Thats a horrible report by Adam London. He basically said nothing substantial and quoted another “peer”. Validation?
Regarding the C’s Brass, as Bob H said, “They’d be negligent if they didn’t.” (I’m sure Brown wasn’t the only one discussed) We all know that so where’s the story? Can’t find it b/cuz there ain’t none.
My turn to SMH..
