Jared Sullinger arrested after alleged domestic assault, according to report

The Boston Celtics big man turned himself in Tuesday morning following a weekend incident.

Jared Sullinger turned himself into police early Tuesday morning, according to Nikoletta Banushi of MyFox Boston. Sullinger was arrested after reportedly being involved in a domestic situation with his girlfriend over the weekend.

The Boston Celtics big man is reportedly being charged with assault and battery, malicious destruction of property and witness intimidation. He's expected to appear in Waltham District Court on Tuesday to be formally charged.

The 21-year-old fell in last year's NBA Draft because of reported back problems, but ended up offering good on-court production as the 21st pick. Sullinger averaged a solid 6 points and 5.9 rebounds in less than 20 minutes of action during his rookie year.

He was expected to take on a bigger role for the Celtics this season after the trade of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry to the Brooklyn Nets, but that's up in the air after the results of this situation.

I am with Matty. I dont see Sully as that type of person...and need to hear the whole story.

When I was in my 20s, I had some good fights with Girlfriends at the time - nothing physical, but a few that were pretty heated. I can only imagine if I was 6'9" - and it was known that I had money, it may have turned out a bit differently.

Sully surrendered himself to police.  Ok, maybe that's not THAT big a deal, he is, after all, not some lowlife fugitive, but it's something.


The witness intimidation is worrisome, but that might just be a case of Sully being 6'9", 280# and angry.  That could intimidate a lot of people, including some NBA power forwards.  If someone thought he was a little out of control, and maybe he was a bit, and said "you need to back off a bit" and he responded "oh yeah?  And who's going to make me?  STFU and mind your own business or else!", and that might be considered witness intimidation.  

We should definitely withhold judgment.  Let's let this unfold.  As we all remember, Paul Pierce got into trouble, and got stabbed, because he was in a club and is Paul Pierce and was young, dumb and full of cum at the time.  Who knows what is behind all this.  Big Baby broke his hand punching his friend in the head because he was jealous (he thought his friend and his girlfriend were a bit too friendly), this might not even be that.

Wait until his mom gets hold of him.  If even half the stories I've heard are true, that will hurt more than any jail time.

WALTHAM -- Jared Sullinger arrived to his arraignment hearing in Waltham after being arrested on charges of battery, malicious destruction of property and witness intimidation Tuesday.

Sullinger pleaded not guilty to all charges and will be released on $5000 bail.

Prosecutors sought an order for Sullinger to stay away from the victim (his girlfriend), and a mental-health evaluation. It was ruled that Sullinger have no contact with the victim unless a third party is present, a choice made by Sullinger's girlfriend. Telephone calls between Sullinger and his girlfriends are permitted.

Sullinger's defense said that both the bail amount and the mental-health evaluation were unnecessary. The defense alluded to the recent high-profile Jared Remy case in Waltham and said that case should not be factored into Sullinger's ruling.

Sullinger has employed lawyers that are the part of the legal defense team with which Aaron Hernandez has been fighting his case. Attorneys Charles Rankin and Jamie Sultan of Rankin & Sultan were with Sullinger at Waltham District Court for his arraignment Tuesday.

Sullinger was dressed in a grey Buckeyes t-shirt, representing his alma mater Ohio State. Sullinger's father, Satch, was present in court.

Appearances. At this point, we're dealing with appearances. Showing up in court in an Ohio State T-shirt and lawyers dealing with a high-profile murder case doesn't make for good appearances. If it gets to trial, then it's all about who has the best legal minds but at this point you want to defuse it, if possible, by looking good.

If I am accused of something, particularly if I dont believe I am guilty of doing anything wrong - I want to best defense I can afford. Period.

People may not have liked Johnny Cochran - but he got OJ acquitted. I could not care less about appearances when it comes to my ass going to jail or not.

This is going to be tough on Sullinger as the judge and ass't DA will not be easy on him due to what happened with the Jared Remy case last month.

For those not familiar with the case, he was arrested for beating his girl friend/mother of his daughter and was released without court order to stay away....went back the next night and stabbed her to death in front of his daughter.

Remy is the son of Jerry Remy former Red Sox second baseman and 25 years the Red Sox color man on TV.

On Thursday, she changed her Facebook status from “in a relationship” to “it’s complicated,” they said.

Hours later, on Thursday night, the 27-year-old Martel, a 2004 graduate of Taunton High School, was dead of multiple stab wounds. Remy -- the son of former Red Sox player and TV broadcaster Jerry Remy – is charged with her murder.

Jared Remy, 34, pleaded not guilty in Waltham District Court on Friday to charges of murder and domestic assault and battery in the killing of Martel.

Days earlier, on Wednesday, Remy had been released on personal recognizance in an open assault and battery case in which Martel was the alleged victim, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said. There was no active restraining order against him, she said.

Martel was granted a temporary restraining order on Tuesday night, after the alleged assault by Jared Remy at their home. But Remy’s relatives convinced Martel not to file a permanent restraining order against him, Martel's family said.

“That was not done, and it ultimately led to her death,” Richard Martel, Jennifer’s uncle, said Friday outside his Fall River home.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly one-third of female homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner.

And the most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence is when she takes steps to leave the relationship, one expert said.

He flew home from Ohio to turn himself in to police. He could not go home to get proper clothing, as far as I can tell. I doubt this has any bearing on impressions. As far as the lawyer, wouldn't you want the best if you could afford it??? Let's wait and see

Sully left and went to Ohio.. Probably did not tell her where he was going.

She was stewing for 10 hrs thinking he is with the other woman..and then makes the abuse claim....a woman scorned is more dangerous than a WMD

I agree with MrKleen, you hire the best defense team so there is no chance of legal error. If you have a serious illness....do you go to a family doctor or a specialist in the area of your illness?

You want to tamp this down professionally as quickly as possible.

I give Sullinger the benefit of doubt. When things get heated and even when nothing truly happened......revenge does set in......you cannot get revenge physically with a 6'9" 280lb person.....so the next thing is to smear his name especially when you are a star basketball player and making millions.

Besides ...what was the witness intimidation ........... Sully telling them to shut their mouth and not say anything?

We all were not there........let Sully....his parents.....lawers ....and the other party work it out in private or in court.

Whatever the outcome, this will be very public.

The witness intimidation resulted from him snatching the phone from when she tried to call the PO--lice.

WALTHAM — Boston Celtic Jared Sullinger repeatedly pinned his girlfriend to a bed and to the floor and snatched her cellphone when she told him she was going to call police during a heated argument inside Sullinger’s townhome here on Saturday, authorities alleged today.

Sullinger, 21, pleaded not guilty in Waltham District Court to charges of assault and battery, intimidation of a witness, and destruction of personal property stemming from the alleged violent incident that ended with Sullinger storming out of the townhome.

District Court Judge Gregory C. Flynn set bail at $5,000 cash. After speaking with the girlfriend, the judge ordered Sullinger to contact her only by telephone or if a third person is present. The girlfriend, Deann Smith, did not seek a restraining order against Sullinger.

Sulllinger’s defense attorney, Charles Rankin, said in court that Sullinger and Smith were “long-time sweethearts’’ who met while both were attending Ohio State University. He told the judge that Smith waited 10 hours before she called Waltham police for help on Saturday.

He also said that on Saturday, Sullinger flew back to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, for a pre-planned visit with his parents. Once he learned from Waltham police that they had a warrant for his arrest, Rankin said, Sullinger voluntarily returned to Boston where he surrendered to police today without incident.

During the arraignment, Rankin urged Flynn to focus solely on Sullinger’s case and not draw a connection between Sullinger’s case and that of Jared Remy, who is acccused of murdering his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel, last month. The day before the slaying, Remy was released on personal recognizance from the same courthouse after an allegation of domestic violence. The case also drew sports fans’ attention because Remy was the son of well-known Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy.

In a Waltham police report filed in court today, police said they were called to the townhome shared by the couple around 8 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, Smith told them that she confronted Sullinger, whom she suspected of cheating on her. The two argued verbally, and the argument intensified when Smith started packing up her belongings, according to the report.

“During this heated argument in the bedroom, Jared pushed her down onto the bed and got on top of her. Deann states she tried several times to get up, but he kept pinning her down and would not let her up,’’ Waltham police wrote in the report.

Smith told police that Sullinger threw her off the bed and onto the floor. “He then got on top of her again and would not let her up,’’ police wrote.

She said she managed to grab her phone and told Sullinger she was calling police. He allegedly grabbed it out of her hand and then, after pushing her to the ground one more time, went to the garage and drove away.

She told police she knew that Sullinger was scheduled to fly to Ohio. She said she waited until 8 p.m. to call police because it was only by then that she was certain he was out of state. “Once she was able to confirm he was out of state, she called the police to report the incident,’’ police wrote.

According to police, Smith had red marks still visible on her chest; her phone was heavily damaged, but still operable.

Sullinger is 6-foot-9 and weighs 260 pounds, according to the Celtics website.

In court today, Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Sarah Ellis said that Smith told investigators that Sullinger has pushed her around and that she felt threatened by him in the past, but that she never called for help from law enforcement until Saturday.

Ellis also asked that Sullinger undergo a mental health evaluation, a request that Flynn refused, saying it was too soon in the criminal justice process to require Sullinger undergo such an examination.

Sullinger is due back in court Sept. 19.

MY NOTE:  Ok, this is looking more and more like she thinks he's cheating, she's pissed off, waits 10 hours before calling police (so, it's not exactly a case of "HELP!  HELP!").  She waited until he was out of state and then dialed 911, just to make it look like he was fleeing jurisdiction.  The damage of personal property is the cell phone he threw across the room (buy her a nice, new phone that's an upgrade).  The witness intimidation is him telling her to put the phone down and when she didn't, 280# Sullinger grabbed it from her. She didn't ask for a restraining order, showing that she doesn't see him as an ongoing threat. Bail was set at $5000, not a lot of money for a felony charge even for normal people. Time to get a new girlfriend, Sully, this one has a spiteful streak.

And her phone was still operable.

It is in very poor taste to be making excuses or scenarios that make Sully out to be guilt free.  The more I read, the more I do not like what I read.

Physically restrained her, took her phone when she wanted to call police . . .

FYI, this hits extremely close to home, in regards to one of my daughter's past DA situation.  You may want to back up and check yourself before posting any more excuses.  I agree that we should all wait for further evidence or proof.  It is an extremely weird dynamic when love turns to anger and then, hate.

Agree...just some real dumb shi.

He should have just let her leave...but this reflects his baby like imaturity and anger issues.

Hope all works out but with all the recent drama involving sports figures in Boston this does not look good.
