Trade Rumor Thread
The deadline is 2/19, less than 1 month. A lot of stuff (read "bullshit") will be thrown around. This is our short-term flush toilet for all those premature ejaculations.

Lakers Rumors: Brandon Bass ‘Expected’ To Be Traded Before Deadline
By Ryan Ward -01/19/2016
The Los Angeles Lakers are no strangers to making trades during the regular season and this year, more than one deal could be made before the NBA deadline on Feb. 18.
With only a few weeks left before the deadline, players on the Lakers roster are starting to surface in trade rumors. Unlike in years past, no big-name players have been linked to the Lakers in these trade rumors, but three players, in particular, have been mentioned as potential trade bait for Los Angeles.
According to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, Brandon Bass may be one of the three most likely to be moved before the trade deadline:
The player that’s more likely to be moved is forward Brandon Bass. The Lakers tried Bass on at a low dollar amount hoping he could contribute and be something of a tutor for forward Julius Randle. With the Lakers going nowhere fast, Bass is one of the guys the front office is expected to move by the deadline.
Bass has dealt with a nagging foot injury that may complicate things if the team is intent on trading the veteran forward. Despite that fact, Bass could be involved in a deal before Feb. 19 via Kyler:
Bass has been nursing a problematic foot, so that is a concern, but the sense is the Lakers will be players at the deadline and Bass could be on his way out.
Nick Young and Roy Hibbert have also been mentioned as players on the Lakers that could be headed elsewhere before the buzzer sounds on the trade deadline.
Los Angeles is rumored to be looking to trade Hibbert to a playoff contender. Young, however, has been on the trading block for quite some time and could also be moved to a playoff team looking for a bench scorer of his caliber.
bob
MY NOTE: No surprise with Hibbert. What does it say that he went from being at least a middle-of-the-pack NBA center to being a discard in 1 year? He's healthy, he's just a dinosaur in the coming age of the mammals.
A little surprised they'd move Nick Young, to be honest. Danny might want to consider him.
Sad to hear about Steady Eddy being on the block. I always hope/wish for the best for him.

NBA trade rumor: Toronto a potential destination for David Lee?
By Jeff Clark @celticsblog on Jan 20, 2016, 7:36a 20
Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports
We finally have a rumor.
David Lee is the most logical person to be dangled at the trade deadline so it was only a matter of time before the first rumors about his availability started seeping out of the woodwork.
Steve Kyler reports (to the surprise of no one) that Lee is available and that he would welcome a change of scenery. What's interesting is that a team, the Raptors, was named as a potential landing spot.
NBA PM: The Trade Deadline is Nearing | Basketball Insiders | NBA Rumors And Basketball News
The problem for Boston is that it’s difficult to move Lee’s $15.4 million contract without any long-term cap impact. Their desire to keep their flexibility and not take on long-term money is something the Celtics have made clear to inquiring teams. One of the teams that continues to be mentioned as a possibility for Lee at the deadline is the Toronto Raptors. However, making the cap math work would be complicated unless a third team that’s willing to take on one of Toronto’s longer deals gets involved.
Your obvious next move is to seek out a roster page with the Raptors salaries listed. Here's one. As you go down that list, you can mentally cross off Carroll and Lowry. It seems very unlikely that the team would be willing to move the recently extended Jonas Valanciunas.
Which brings us to DeMar DeRozan. He's most likely going to opt out of his contract this summer and field max offers from the likes of the Lakers. Some believe that the Raptors don't want to lock into a future with this current team and would be inclined to shake things up by trading DeRozan now, while they can still get value for him. In theory the Celtics could offer up picks and David Lee and have the next few months to convince DeRozan to stay in Boston with a 5 year max offer (a year longer than other teams could offer).
Personally I don't see the Raptors moving on just yet (at least not without an obvious over-pay) and I don't really see DeRozan as the star I want to invest our stock of trade assets in.
Regardless, I don't think DeRozan was what Mr. Kyler was talking about in his rumor when he mentioned Toronto's "longer deals." The Raps have Patrick Patterson signed through the end of next year and they have Corey Joseph and Terrence Ross on deals stretching out to 2019. That's a lot of cash to lock up on guys that may or may not be better than the options already on the Celtics roster for much cheaper deals.
So if the Raptors and Celtics are going to hook up on a trade with David Lee, the most likely scenario would be getting involved in a 3 team deal. Option A has always been to keep Lee's contract available to bid on any star that might become available at the deadline. As the weeks and months pass without an obvious trade target, the odds increase that secondary options will be explored.
And of course, if all else fails I don't think Ainge will deal just to make a deal. If he doesn't get good value in return with contracts that he's willing to accept back, then he'll let the deadline pass with Lee still on the roster. Then you could see David Lee request a buy-out in order to play for another team and pump up his stock for his free agency this summer.
So that was all probably more thought than this rumor deserved but it is one of the first one's I've had a chance to chew on, so forgive me. There will be more coming soon.
bob
MY NOTE: David Lee for DeMar DeRozan? I'd give Danny a big, wet sloppy for that. Of course, it wouldn't be straight up, there would have to be more going to Toronto. The question is "what and/or whom?"

Think DeRozan is a better shooter than anyone we currently have now in my opinion. Be a nice swap but as you say we need to add some more to the pot. Put I would want some assurance he sticks around.
Hopefully not a half year rental either.

Beat,
I agree but being in a position for a DeRozan sign-and-trade isn't too bad either. He will be in high demand including and maybe especially LAL.

Re: Trade Rumor Thread
Kind of hard to think that DeRozan would want to think about being anything but a rental if traded with free agency only 6 months away. Why would he want to make a commitment at this time of the year and do a "sign and trade" with any team?
i would trade Lee for him if only because it would eliminate some of the log jam at the forward spots IF nothing else better can be done with Lee's contract.

Bob,
What other players and or picks would you think have to go to Toronto besides Lee?
Unless their socks are knocked off, I doubt Toronto would trade DeRozan to a competitor in the East.

Re: Trade Rumor Thread
well, I doubt Toronto would trade DeRozen for Lee and only one first round pick next year myself. Not to mention it doesn't work salary wise as both teams are over the cap.
While Derozen is a high volume scorer (like IT) he is NOT a great shooter 46% form 2 point land and a whopping 27% from 3...won't set well with Brads love of the 3 point shot I fear.
he's seems to play more 2 guard now than he used to and can't shoot the 3?
also, He has almost SAID he wants to sign with the Lakers in the off-season.
born in LA
high school in LA
college at USC
So Lee for him won't work without another team invloved and more assets leaving here. He will be gone next year most likely, unless Danny pays him MAX SALARY (and maybe he'd still leave).
a seven year vet i think cost $25M on a max deal next year.
alll for a wing that has career FG% of 44% and 3 pt % of 27%?
seems costly to me

I can't see ANY way Toronto can get Lee in a trade (not to mention WHY they woudl want him). Maybe if Ainge buys him out and he;s a FA they coudl sign him to a vet minimum dela til the end of the season.
as for what it would take to get DeRozen
salary wise a couple options that work
1) Bradley for DeRozen
2) Turner and Jerebko for DeRozen
Toronto would probably jump all over Bradley for DeRozen if Danny offers it, IMO, as they already extended both Valanciunus and Ross. which means they have no money for DeRozen anyway.
Turner and Jerebko...not sure they'd bite on that one, though they would control Jerebko and his non guaranteed deal next season. Add Dallas draft pick and maybe they might be interested

Re: Trade Rumor Thread
Somewhere I've seen a suggestion of brook Lopez coming to Boston which I've been thinking about for over a year.
T. Young and Lopez in a combo deal in exchange for jerebko, turner, lee and zeller with us adding that entire horde of second rounders as well as our own and the Dallas pick I think could get it done. Open a lot of possibilities for Brooklyn moving forward and gets us over the hill of mediocrity pretty fast.
With their addition, and all the main suspects but Sullinger being back next season and what would have most HAVE to be a top 5 pick coming on board as well as some cap space for another Johnson type deal and we could well be enjoying the fresh air that comes from having another window opened to chase titles.

I don't see Brooklyn trading their two best players to Boston for Boston's spare parts, non-lottery 1st rounders and 2nd rounders.
Brooklyn only has $45m in guaranteed salaries for next year. They don't need to move Lopez or Young.
I think Brooklyn will be buyers at the deadline.
What incentive is there for them to get worse? Really none.
I could see them trying to trade for a scoring pg/sg guard like Lou Williams.

Re: Trade Rumor Thread
yep , the Nets have no need to dump their best two players.
Johnsons' $20M come off the books after this year, and they WILL be players for a top free agent next year I think.
with the loss of Jack, I can see them trying at add a PG somehow by the trade deadline.
on another thread I said something about Lopez being an option I would try to get , IF I were Danny. But I also said it was unlikely that the nets would move him. IF they did want to, probably NOT to us in ANY WAY .

I love this stuff so here goes some more rabble:

LOL,,NOT AGAIN!!!!!!!
my take: while Lee and parts ( including a couple firsts) might make sense to Cleveland, they'll never admit their mistake. Better to just fire Blatt and name LeBron the Head coach (since he is already).

I still think is more likely than most.

Re: Trade Rumor Thread
So far any rumors involving Boston look like pure speculation and suggestion. Not much in the real possibility department.
I don't see us being very active in the trade department this year at all. We've played well as a team, better than expected, but individually I don't think we have anyone at any position that a contender would covet to put them over the top. In terms of trades with non-contenders, we don't have much in the way of building blocks to trade either. We have picks to trade, but we need a defensive minded big and a scorer at the small forward spot that are young and promising; who's got them that might be willing to deal? No obvious candidates, anyway.
I think we're looking more at post-season deals or using some of the higher picks ourselves over the next couple of years. We'll have some cash too, but free agency doesn't look like a realistic place for us to play until we get one or two more promising prospects that would make us an appealing landing spot.
My bet is we add the best scorer we can through the draft, continue to develop our small-ball approach and see what shakes loose after that.

Boston Celtics would be better off rejecting three commonly rumored trade targets
By Kevin O'Connor @KevinOConnorNBA on Jan 20, 2016, 4:14p 64
TWEET SHARE (278) PIN
Brook Lopez, Markieff Morris, and Ryan Anderson are commonly cited as potential trade targets for the Boston Celtics, who have a mountain of assets and a need for scoring. But here's why the Celtics front office would be better off not dealing for them.
Brook Lopez is not at all a fit
The appeal of Brook Lopez is understandable. He's a 7-footer that averages about 20 points per game. He'd help provide scoring for the Celtics, who rank 19th in offensive rating. And the Nets could be worse without him, a bonus for the Celtics since they own Brooklyn's first-round picks through 2018.
But adding another big would do nothing to alleviate the overflowing frontcourt rotation. Lopez will earn over $40 million total the next two years, so he'd prohibit the Celtics from having immense versatility in free agency. And to make matters worse, Lopez has a long history of foot problems, a major red flag for big men.
And even strictly speaking as a player, Lopez really doesn't seem like the type of player the Celtics want to build around. Though Lopez has made strides defensively, he's still an average pick-and-roll defender. The Celtics are at their best with a center that can comfortably defend more mobile players, like Amir Johnson, and Lopez still struggles in that area.
Lopez's main source of offense comes from the low post, an area the Celtics attack less frequently than most NBA teams. Lopez scores 0.91 points per post-up, per Synergy, which is worse than what every NBA team scores on pick-and-roll finishes by the screener. Stevens has spoken openly in the past about how he likes bigs that rim run, and Lopez simply isn't that player. He's a traditional low post threat, but not someone who sets screens and rumbles down the lane, or sprints hard in transition.
Lopez doesn't make any sense considering his cost, injury history, and style.
Markieff Morris only makes sense in theory
Markieff Morris should be a good player in a modern league that emphasizes versatility. But he isn't. Defensively, he plays without a sense of urgency. Offensively, he's shown flashes but not enough consistency.
Morris also doesn't help the Celtics where they're hurting. The Celtics rank 28th in three-point shooting, but Morris is only a 31.4% shooter from behind the arc over the last three seasons.
The Celtics already have a player in Jonas Jerebko who has drained 39.7% of his threes since 2013. Not only is Jerebko a better shooter, but he's also a better defender because of his hustling mindset and ability to switch onto different positions.
Brad Stevens worked his magic on reclamation projects like Jordan Crawford and Evan Turner, but those players aren't exactly knuckleheads like Morris. Despite having only a modest contract, Morris isn't worth the risk, especially with Jerebko on the roster.
Ryan Anderson is redundant
Ryan Anderson is a really nice stretch forward, as a career 37.9% from behind the arc. He's also a free-agent-to-be, so there'd be no long-term commitment for the Celtics. But Anderson is redundant with Kelly Olynyk already on the roster.
Olynyk is three years younger than Anderson, and already a better defensive player. As underwhelming a rebounder Olynyk is (17.2 DREB%), Anderson is even worse (15.4 DREB%). Olynyk is a significantly better playmaker, as he's one of the rare 7-footers that can drive closeouts to score or pass.
Anderson's calling card is his shot and the Celtics desperately need shooting. But they don't need it as much from the power forward position. And it's not like they could pair Olynyk and Anderson the floor, since they'd get sliced up on defense.
Since mid-November, Olynyk is sinking 47.9% of his threes, which ranks sixth in the NBA. But he's still only averaging 8.6 shots per game, about five fewer than Anderson. The Celtics could get more offense by feeding their hottest shooter, not trading for one.
Since last season, Anderson has played 77 games that he receives at least 10 field goal attempts. In those games he averages 17.3 points on a 52.1 eFG%, in 30.4 minutes. Olynyk has played 62 games under the same criteria and has averaged 17.8 points on a 61.4 eFG%, in only 26.9 minutes.
If he isn't already, Olynyk can be a better player than Anderson. The solution could be just to increase his usage and force-feed him the ball. Go ahead and call me an "Olynyk Truther." I won't deny it.
Who should the Celtics target?
This year's trade deadline might not be active due to the tight standings and the upcoming rising salary cap that comes with uncertainty on player value. Click here to read my article on About.com, which details five players I'd target, besides the usual suspects like Danilo Gallinari, Kevin Love, and DeMarcus Cousins.
The player I'm especially hot for is Jared Dudley. Unlike Morris, Dudley is great locker room guy and he's a proven knockdown shooter. He's a career 40.1% shooter from three and a very solid defender. The Wizards are on the playoff bubble, but if they struggle before the deadline, a free-agent-to-be like Dudley could be a player they decide to unload for future assets.
The Celtics should try their best to be active around the deadline, but they shouldn't force for it for a player like Lopez, Morris, or Anderson.
bob
MY NOTE: I agree with Morris and Anderson (and isn't it great that Kelly is already considered better than a more seasoned veteran like Anderson?), not so sure about Lopez. Lopez provides inside power that is right-sized (as opposed to undersized Sully), is no worse at defense than Sully, is no slower than Sully and last, but not least, getting Lopez helps Brooklyn tank.

Boston Celtics would be better off rejecting three commonly rumored trade targets

Who dreams up all these potential trades ? If you were to visit all the basketball sites that offer " rumor mill " opinions you would probably find that every player in the league is being discussed in a trade.

swish,
With the exception of one or two per team, maybe more on teams like GSW and SAS, they probably have been.

Sources: Four serious candidates emerge for Nets' GM job

Yahoo Sports
Two Western Conference executives have moved into prominent consideration with Bryan Colangelo and Danny Ferry for the Brooklyn Nets' general manager job, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Denver Nuggets assistant GM Arturas Karnisovas and Houston Rockets executive VP of basketball operations Gersson Rosas have emerged as serious candidates in the process, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Nets have expressed a desire to have a GM in place prior to the Feb. 18 trade deadline, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Formal interviews are expected to begin in early February.
So far, ownership has balked at the idea of paying Kentucky coach John Calipari the $120 million package he's seeking for a return to the NBA, league sources said.
As the Nets' hierarchy canvasses for background and insight, multiple league executives have spoken at length with team officials about Karnisovas and Rosas in recent days and weeks. While other candidates remain possibilities, these two have separated themselves in the process, league sources said.
Already identified as candidates for the job, Colangelo and Ferry have significant and well-known track records. Colangelo is a two-time NBA executive of the year, who had success running the Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors.
Ferry was GM of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks, where he helped build two Eastern Conference contenders. A year ago, Ferry was fired in a scandal surrounding a racially insensitive scouting report read on a management conference call with Hawks management.
Colangelo has strong backing at the highest reaches of the league office, and Ferry has support from outgoing Nets GM Billy King, who is still involved in the Nets' day-to-day operations until his successor is hired.
Karnisovas and Rosas fit the Nets' desire to have a more global scouting focus, something ownership believes was lacking under the previous regime. The Nets are severely limited in draft picks over the next several years, and will need to be creative in reshaping a floundering roster.
Karnisovas, a native of Lithuania, speaks several languages, including Russian, and has strong relationships with the members of owner Mikhail Prokhorov's extended sporting inner-circle. Karnisovas was a college star at Seton Hall University, and has polished a strong global basketball résumé that includes jobs in the NBA's league office, director of scouting with the Rockets' front office, and currently as assistant GM with the Nuggets. Karnisovas spent two years as USA Basketball's global basketball scout.
Working with Denver GM Tim Connelly, Karnisovas has had success with player personnel decisions involving overseas players, including the drafting of Jusuf Nurkic, Nikola Jokic, and Joffrey Lauvergne. Karnisovas played a part with selecting Emmanuel Mudiay and Gary Harris, too.
After Seton Hall, Karnisovas won two Olympic bronze medals (1992 and '96) for Lithuania and was chosen as FIBA's European Player of the Year in 1996. As a player, he reached the Euroleague Final Four three times.
In his 13th year with the Rockets, Rosas, a native of Bogota, Colombia, has been the franchise's Executive VP for five years and worked closely with GM Daryl Morey in remaking the roster and building a 2014-15 Western Conference finalist. Rosas played a prominent role in the Rockets' reshaping of the roster in the post-Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady era, when the franchise traded McGrady for multiple draft picks and built up the assets needed to acquire star James Harden via trade and lure Dwight Howard in free agency.
Rosas played a significant part in bringing Patrick Beverley from Europe as a free agent and drafting a future max-contract player, Chandler Parsons, with the 38th pick of the draft. During those years, Karnisovas was the Rockets' director of scouting.
Rosas has strong personal and working relationships with two potential coaching candidates, Jeff Van Gundy and Tom Thibodeau. Both coaches worked with Rosas in Houston.
Rosas replaced Karnisovas – a former colleague with the Rockets – as the International Player Personnel Scout for USA Basketball in 2015. He also had a brief stay as Dallas Mavericks general manager in the summer of 2013 before parting ways and returning to Houston.

MY NOTE: No trade with Brooklyn will happen until after they sign a GM and coach. They might not trade with us (gun-shy of Danny? LOL) but they might trade with someone else which creates roster imbalances on those teams, which begets more trades which Danny might be able to get in on.
$120M for Calipari to return to a league where he was in over his head the first time?

Bob,
I guess $120 mil is Calipari's price to do something he really doesn't want to do in the first place!

Hawks had been soliciting offers for Teague or Dennis Schroder, per rival execs. Though recently they have focused more on Teague.

MY NOTE: I'm good with Evan Turner for Dennis Schroder. Bradley for Teague (they make about the same money)? I say no. I like Teague a lot, and we need a point guard, but that will screw up IT's head and I like Bradley.
