Gordon Hayward's decision will set Celtics offseason into motion
Chris Forsberg
Tue, November 17, 2020, 6:28 AM PST
All eyes are on Gordon Hayward Tuesday with a deadline for him to pick up the $34.2 million final-year option on his contract. For the Celtics, Hayward’s decision is the domino that should set their offseason maneuverings into motion.
Which is a good thing because Celtics fans, per offseason policy, are already getting anxious.
Less than 24 hours since the NBA’s trade restrictions were lifted, the Milwaukee Bucks beefed up their Eastern Conference-topping roster by paying a ransom for Jrue Holiday (a player previously linked to Boston) and poaching Bogdan Bogdanovic from Sacramento. The Bucks struck early and paid a steep price for Holiday but can now confidently put a supermax offer in front of Giannis Antetokounmpo having cobbled together a roster worthy of title contention.
All this while James Harden reportedly tries to power play his way to creating a super team with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn.
Deep breaths, Celtics fans.
It’s still early. And so much of how Boston moves forward hinges on Hayward’s decision. A quick recap of Hayward’s potential decisions and what it means for Boston:
HAYWARD OPTS IN, WANTS TO RIDE OUT FINAL YEAR
If Hayward opts into his big final-year payday and expresses a desire to play out the season in Boston, the Celtics can move forward knowing the core of their team is intact. The danger for Hayward is that his future would no longer be in his control. The Celtics, if fearful that he was leaving after the season or simply not emerging as a legitimate contender this year, could deal Hayward during the 2020-21 campaign if an attractive deal materialized.
If Hayward is here and the Celtics are a clear-cut taxpaying team, the priority becomes improving on the margins. Boston must identify the best use of its three first-round draft picks.
Is there someone at No. 14 that can contribute immediately like Saddiq Bey? Could the Nos. 26 and 30 picks be combined to chase another player in the teens with high upside like RJ Hampton? Could the Celtics move one of those late first-round picks and secure a more established bench option like Derrick Rose, who would provide necessary depth behind Kemba Walker at the point guard spot and offer a much-needed scoring punch?
Could Danny Ainge combine all those picks and vault high in the draft to obtain his most desirable draft target? The Celtics would also have the taxpayer’s midlevel exception available following the draft to pursue big-man help (Aron Baynes? Harry Giles?) or further bolster the bench.
HAYWARD OPTS IN, WANTS TO BE TRADED
Looking for the best of all worlds, Hayward opts into his big 2020-21 payday but expresses a desire to be traded for a fresh start. The Celtics would be under no obligation to comply and it’s a risky path for Hayward, especially considering Boston would lose a bunch of leverage in that scenario.
This is not an ideal path for either side but one that Hayward could pursue in hopes of the biggest overall payday.
HAYWARD OPTS OUT, WANTS TO RE-SIGN LONG TERM IN BOSTON
Now north of 30 and with an injury history, security could be important to Hayward. He can opt out of that bulky payday and take less first-year money to sign a long-term extension in Boston. The two sides would have to find a number that’s comfortable for both sides — no easy task, as Al Horford showed last year — but it could be beneficial for both parties. The Celtics would trim their salary commitment this season and lower their tax bill.
Part of the reason that we’ve heard so much about Hayward’s agent Mark Bartelstein canvassing the league for potential suitors is an attempt to gain leverage in that scenario. Bartelstein can go to Ainge and say, “Well, the Hawks are willing to pay, say, $90 million over the next three years, are you?”
It’s a dangerous game of chicken for both sides and if Boston is simply not willing to spend that sort of money, they can essentially challenge Hayward to take their best offer or sign elsewhere.
HAYWARD OPTS OUT, WANTS TO BE TRADED
If Hayward simply needs a fresh start but doesn’t want to leave Boston high and dry, he can opt out and work with the team to facilitate a sign-and-trade to his preferred destination. While the number of teams that can sign him via cap space is small and devoid of contenders, sign-and-trade options expand the pool of teams that could add Hayward by sending back assets to Boston.
There’s been no shortage of speculation about whether Indiana would be interested in bringing home their native son. At that point, Boston is trying to recoup as much value as possible while having to fill the void of a departing All-Star-caliber player.
HAYWARD OPTS OUT, WALKS AWAY
Maybe the worst possible avenue for Boston. It would be the third time in two offseasons that the Celtics would watch a max-salary player walk away for no return.
This seems like the most unlikely of options because of the lack of teams that can sign Hayward outright this offseason. Boston would remain over the salary cap and have limited means to replace Hayward.
The only benefit for Boston would be having the larger version of the midlevel as an asset during free agency but neither that nor the biannual exception would deliver the sort of impact talent that Hayward can be when healthy.
Bob
MY NOTE: Contrary what some writer said it seems that today, Tuesday, at 5PM is when Gordon has to inform the Celtics as to his intention regarding his option. Man, I want Danny's job when it's all about resigning Marcus and Jaylen to longterm contracts, and negotiating with Tatum for an extension when there won't be that much negotiating involved, but I do NOT want his job now. He has to have stacks of racks of options lined up and not know which path he needs to go down until 26 hours before the draft begins. No wonder he had a heart attack, I'm having one and I'm nowhere near the eye of this hurricane.

Re: Hayward trade rumors
The notion that GH has Danny waiting in limbo makes no sense to me. He is staying for year 4 of his deal. There is zero risk to GH in making $32 million and I read somewhere that he has a 15% trade kicker. Easy money for him. Danny could lose him after next year but also use one of his picks to draft a wing this year.
I look for Danny to play around the edges. He will try to improve his draft position and then go bargaining hunting for an MLE level free agent. He will also look to consolidate some players on the roster into a trade.
I do not expect a big bang! Just maybe a few fire crackers and hopefully devoid of any duds.

Well all the talk about Holiday was for nothing, he is in Milwaukee now. I just have to wonder what is going on in Boston. You are right dboss he is here for now unless a deal is in the works with him involved to move him else where

Celtics Blog has a report that they are looking to push the opt in/out timing for Hayward until Thursday. This could mean one of a few things, they are renegotiating his contract, they are working on a deal, he is working on a deal????? whatever, more confusion

If nothing else, Hayward potentially agreeing to wait on opting-in is a sign Boston's worst case scenario (Hayward walking away with nothing coming back for Boston) is probably not going to happen. Otherwise, there would be little reason for a delayed decision.

MY NOTE: They agreed to delay until Thursday, the day after the draft. "Curiouser and curiouser", said Alice.

Hawks pick is #6 and they're the hot rumor of the moment on Hayward. Hayward extended. No other team appears willing to work with Boston to trade up. Possible package including Hayward that sends #6 to Boston? Maybe the sign and trade is coming back into style. Who knows?

Gordon Hayward rumors 2020: Atlanta Hawks ‘in play’ to acquire Boston Celtics wing (report)
Updated 7:17 PM; Today 7:17 PM
By John Karalis | JKaralis@masslive.com
Eyebrows were raised around the NBA on Tuesday when the Boston Celtics and Gordon Hayward agreed to extend his player option deadline from today to Thursday. The feeling is that both the Celtics and Hayward are in agreement on something that is in progress but cannot be completed yet, which most likely signals some kind of trade.
According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the Atlanta Hawks are “in play” as a potential destination for Hayward.
“A sign-and-trade deal is a possible route,” Haynes writes. “But Atlanta is equipped with the most cap space in the league at around $44 million and can simply sign Hayward to a hefty multi-year deal if he decided to decline his option.”
The Hawks don’t have to match salaries because they are far enough under the cap to acquire Hayward into cap space, so that means they can take Hayward and one or more of Boston’s first round draft picks in exchange for the sixth overall pick and whomever on the roster they feel comfortable giving up. If the Hawks had been over the cap, they would have had to send back enough salary to match under CBA guidelines.
Trading Hayward away for less salary could not only get Boston a good draft pick and potentially a good role player, but also enough luxury tax relief that they could use their full $9 million Mid-level exception without fear of hitting the hard cap it would trigger.
Hayward’s three years in Boston have been marred with bad luck. He broke and dislocated his ankle in his first game and missed the entire season. A second surgery after that season eliminated his summer recovery and severely limited him in his second season. This past season, his third, saw him playing some of his best basketball but each stretch of good play was stopped by another freak injury (a broken hand suffered fighting through a pick against San Antonio, and a severely sprained ankle landing on a foot as the playoffs begun in the Orlando bubble).
Meanwhile, the Hawks have all but announced they don’t want the sixth pick in the draft and to add another young player to the roster. They’ve wanted veterans on the team, and a healthy Hayward would allow Trae Young to play off the ball and give the Hawks a much more capable perimeter defender.

I don’t see why Atlanta would give up any players for Gordon when they have $44m in cap space.
Maybe they can get a 1st round pick from Boston by sending Capella to Boston in a Hayward trade.

Hayward can use the sign & trade as leverage for a bigger contract.

Capela and #6 pick for Hayward and #14.
Ainge can try to squeeze the Hawks into giving up Huerter also, maybe throw those late first rounders in or to a third team to get it done

I think Gordon will probably get $20m per year as a free agent, probably for 3 years.

TJ that might be true but the fact that GH and Boston have not announced his option looks more and more likely that a trade is in the works. That does not mean a trade will happen. Atlanta is ready to take the next step and that means adding quality veteran experience. This holding pattern could simply be an agreed upon contingency whereby GH is open to staying or open to being traded. To be honest I have little faith that the rumors circulating around will come to pass. There is no good reason to part with GH and a first rounder for Carpella. I also read in the AJC (Atl newspaper) that they want to keep the 6th pick. There are a lot of balls in the air.

Report: Atlanta in talks to sign-and-trade for Gordon Hayward
By Kurt HelinNov 17, 2020, 10:00 PM EST
When it was reported Boston and Gordon Hayward had extended the deadline for Hayward to decide whether to pick up his $34.2 million player option, it was a clear sign something was in the works.
That something appears to be the Atlanta Hawks, who want to add Hayward in a sign-and-trade, reports Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
The Atlanta Hawks are in play in an attempt to acquire Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward in what likely would be a sign-and-trade scenario, league sources tell Yahoo Sports… Hayward, 30, has plenty of interest, sources say.
Atlanta is looking for a secondary playmaker to pair with Trae Young, a healthy Hayward would fit the bill. It’s the health part that is the risk.
Boston likely does not get a lot back in this sign-and-trade, the Hawks are not interested in throwing their No. 6 pick in this draft into the mix, according to sources. If Atlanta doesn’t think new center Clint Capela can play next to John Collins they could offer Collins in the trade, but as Collin and Capela have yet to play a minute together it may be too early to give up on them. If Hayward opted out in Boston, Atlanta has the cap room to sign Hayward outright, so Boston doesn’t have much leverage. With a sign-and-trade, the Celtics could get something, but not a big haul.
Other teams have been rumored to be in the mix for Hayward as well (leaking this about Atlanta could be to leverage another team).
Whether it is in Atlanta or elsewhere (Indiana has long been rumored), don’t expect Hayward to be in Celtics’ green next season.

Fosberg on NBC right now. He is Leary of the Atlanta story. He is also saying that Atlanta has no reason to trade for him, just wait for him to opt out. He feels the Celts may end up with almost nothing. Is Indy they team? This is awful. Three stars leaving this team in three years. Why?????

No he hasn’t opted out yet.
If Boston gives up another asset in the trade and not just lose Gordon for nothing, Boston could gain a huge trade exception.

This remains intriguing since if there was some great deal to be had, Hayward would have simply opted out today.
Stay or go, Hayward and Boston must be working on something that will be of mutual benefit.

Re: Hayward trade rumors
Kind of sad that he did not want to finish off that contract and maybe set things straight. He came here with such high expectations, and little by little he went from being the top signed free agent, then Kyrie came and stole some of his thunder. Last year it was Kemba, and Gordon dropped to the 4th option on the offense, which was a shame. He is a talented guy.
I am sure he just wants a fresh start somewhere so that he could rebuild his reputation and show he was not a Danny mistake. Sometimes though, as has been written, “wherever you go, you are there” and he may be running from himself

Re: Hayward trade rumors
Hayward in my opinion is a salary dump to fee space up for a legitimate center and rim protector such as center Karl-Anthony Towns.
Danny knows you cannot play small ball forever before it catches up to the rest of the team fatigue wise.
The talk about Kimba going/trade as well falls into the same rational. I like Kimba and has added stability and peace to the Celtic locker room. Of coarse if you can find an ample PG at a reduced salary who is even keeled, that would be the only exception to trading him.

Re: Hayward trade rumors
so the article TJ posted says Boston can't expect much return including that #6 pick for Hayward.
Then later they suggest that maybe John Collins would come back.....what???
LOL
Collins is a better, younger and for now a cheaper player than Capela..but Ainge says...sure, we'll take Collins back...LOL.
sometimes I just scratch my head at so called sports writing.
but hey...I'd LOVE to get Collins from the Hawks, even throw in every draft pick we have this year along with Hayward for JUST Collins!!
he moves the needle that much, so I hope they are right....LOL.
oh yeah, Ainge would then have the full MLE ($9Plus) for another vet too.

oh yeah, Ainge would then have the full MLE ($9Plus) for another vet too.

Re: Hayward trade rumors
It looks uncomfortably like last year's situation with Horford, except Hayward is not blindsiding Danny.
I would not give up anything if I were Atlanta considering I could just sign him as FA. And even if Hayward is willing to work with the Celtics on a sign-and-trade deal I would not give up anything, but players I consider salary dumps. Giving up Collins is a laughable suggestion imo. What leverage does Danny have here? I do not see much .Who would be considered unwanted on the Atlanta roster that the Celtics could use?
It seems to me that if true, the trade exception TJ mentioned would be the best return Boston could hope for a sign-and-trade with Atlanta unfortunately.
