Celtics trade rumors: Boston’s shifting to be a buyer at the deadline with recent success the driver
Justin Quinn
Wed, February 9, 2022, 8:25 AM
The Boston Celtics seem to believe in their recent play and plan on investing in the team to compete in the present according to recent reporting from Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix.
For some time — and in earlier deals — the Celtics seemed to signal a strong interest in ducking the NBA’s luxury tax this season. With a roughly $10 million payout from the league as a non-tax team coming to them with the additional benefit of kicking the arrival of the dreaded repeater tax down the road another season, some minor moves for mainly financial purposes seemed the priority.
But since the new year, Boston has looked like an increasingly dangerous team, with the crescendo of that growth having the Celtics own the East’s top net rating at present after several blowout wins.
“Boston seems to have shifted from seller to buyer in recent days, per sources,” relates Mannix in a new column dedicated to getting us up to speed on what he’s heard for trade rumbles around the league.
“The Celtics, winners of six straight and eight of their last nine, are still dangling Dennis Schröder in trade talks—Schröder is on a one-year deal and will be very difficult for Boston to re-sign this summer—but teams that have discussed deals with the Celtics say Boston is looking for a player and draft capital for Schröder.”
A steep price to be sure, but one that makes sense if Schroder is still viewed as a player who can help the Celtics enough now to make losing him for nothing potentially worth it.
Are there still potential buyers at that level of an ask? According to the SI reporter, indeed.
“There is some traction on a Schröder-Donte DiVincenzo swap with Milwaukee, and Cleveland is still interested. Dallas, per sources, is, too. Boston badly needs bench help—former first-round picks Romeo Langford, Aaron Nesmith and Payton Pritchard are out of Ime Udoka’s rotation—and it’s unlikely Boston parts with Schröder without getting at least a rotation player in return.”
This of course makes such a deal complex — but not impossible.
Players like Dallas’ Josh Green, the Cavs’ Dean Wade, or Milwaukee’s Jordan Nwora are among the sort of players who might make sense in such a deal.
And with the deadline set to arrive at 3 pm ET on Thursday, we do not have long to wait to find out which oath Boston’s front office takes.

Rumor has it that the Kings have set a price on moving Barnes
Kings reportedly set asking price for Barnes
The Sacramento Kings parted with Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson yesterday and are willing to do likewise with veteran Harrison Barnes, per Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix. However, Mannix reports the Kings only want players that will help them win now in deals for Barnes and are not interested in “future-based offers.”

Not sure who got the better end of this deal. Probably the Kings because they got the best player. However what the kings needed the most was defense and Sabonis is not a great defender. I think they will improve their rebounding numbers though.

Every sports genius has their take on moves that may be made. Mannix as above still on the Schroeder move, Jackie Mac has Grant moving, Simmons ?? Who knows he is all over the place.

Can you spell Horford? Haven’t looked at the numbers but it may take another body to match salaries and that would be a challenge. Love to have Barnes on this team.dboss wrote:Rumor has it that the Kings have set a price on moving Barnes

One thing I continue to hear from sources on potential Dennis Schroder deal. Celtics are not going to move him just to get under the luxury tax. They would want asset(s) in order to trade him. Team also open to keeping him as he has fans in organization.

He is just starting to play better, if he can give us a spark off the bench with his speed and attributes, he can be a match up nightmare as a BU point guard. There’s a reason he was a top vote getter as a 6th man a few years ago. Hope we keep him and let the contract situation play out in the offseason.

Heard that Celtics traded Bol Bol and PJ Dozier along with a future 2nd and cash to the Magic for a future 2nd round (presumably better than the one they are sending out??). I guess this is a cost cutting move? For the board capologists, would this get us under the cap?

Feb. 10 updates (deadline at 3 p.m. ET)
12:37 p.m. ET: Hours before the NBA trade deadline, Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers canceled practice on Thursday to let "everyone just come in, relax and get some shots up," according to ESPN's Tim Bontemps. "Tomorrow, we'll have shootaround with our team, for sure," Rivers said.
12:30 p.m. ET: The Boston Celtics are trading P.J. Dozier, Bol Bol, a future second-round pick and cash to the Orlando Magic for a future second-round pick, sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The trade puts the Celtics under the luxury tax. Dozier and Bol are both out for the season.
12:03 p.m. ET: The Toronto Raptors are trading Goran Dragic and protected 2022 first-round picks to the San Antonio Spurs for Thad Young, Drew Eubanks and a 2022 second-round pick via the Detroit Pistons, sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Pick is protected 1-14 in 2022; 1-13 in 2023 and would turn into two seconds beyond that.
11:57 a.m. ET: The San Antonio Spurs -- who are trading for the Toronto Raptors' Goran Dragic -- are expected to negotiate a contract buyout with Dragic. Among the teams expected to be interested once he becomes a free agent: Dallas, Milwaukee, Chicago, Clippers.
11:44 a.m. ET: The Sacramento Kings are acquiring the Milwaukee Bucks guard Donte DiVincenzo in a four-team trade, sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Kings forward Marvin Bagley is going to the Detroit Pistons. The Bucks are acquiring the LA Clippers' Serge Ibaka in the deal, according to Wojnarowski. Detroit, which is sending out multiple second-round picks, is sending Josh Jackson and Trey Lyles to the Kings. The Bucks are also sending Semi Ojeleye and Rodney Hood to the Clippers in the four-team deal, too.
11:18 a.m. ET: Sources tell ESPN's Tim MacMahon that the Dallas Mavericks would need "a lot more" than Goran Dragic and a package of draft picks to have serious interest in trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Toronto Raptors.
10:37 a.m. ET: Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash told the media Thursday morning that he feels the same way he did the other day -- that James Harden will not be traded today. "He's not told me he doesn't want to stay. So I'm working off our conversations, which is he wants to be here and we want him here," Nash said. The Nets coach also said he does not expect Harden or LaMarcus Aldridge to play in the Saturday's game at the Miami Heat.
8:57 a.m. ET: James Harden and LaMarcus Aldridge did not accompany the Brooklyn Nets to the Washington Wizards for Thursday night's game; they stayed behind to work with the Nets' performance coaches instead, the Nets tell ESPN's Zach Lowe.
8:36 a.m. ET: Although Brooklyn Nets guard James Harden wants to be traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, he has so far resisted making a formal request out of fear of the public backlash that would come with asking out of a second franchise in consecutive seasons, sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Harden is hopeful Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey will secure a trade today, but Morey and Nets general manager Sean Marks have yet to engage in serious dialogue on a deal. But there's an expectation the sides will talk today and a possibility of a deal remains, sources say. Both teams are measuring the risk-reward of a Harden deal now.
8:07 a.m. ET: While a Russell Westbrook trade remains highly unlikely, the Los Angeles Lakers are looking at guards Alec Burks and Dennis Schroder, sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The future second-round pick the Celtics are receiving from the Magic in Bol Bol, PJ Dozier trade is heavily protected and likely won't convey, league sources tell MassLive.
Bob
MY NOTE: Those were two players under contract. That means that we are down 2 players and must be very close to, if not below, the minimum roster size. There will be another trade that brings at least one player, net, to the Celtics.
So much for Brad's "interest" in Bol Bol.

Hearing that there are 3 or 4 teams that remain interested in acquiring Dennis Schroder. One source says it's just about 50/50 as to whether something gets done. Cs appear to have no plans to trade Josh Richardson, source says.

MY NOTE: Donte DiVincenzo is also a part of this deal, so that Schroder-to-Bucks-for-Donte rumor is now officially dead (unless the Kings trade within the next 1:50, assuming that's even allowed, and/or release him and we sign him off the waiver wire).

Celtics reportedly targeting Orlando’s Terrence Ross, possibly swapping for Dennis Schroder
Justin Quinn
Thu, February 10, 2022, 6:47 AM
Could Dennis Schroder be about to become an Orlando Magic player? According to new reporting from The Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn, that could well be the German point guard’s destination by the end of Thursday.
According to Washburn, “the club is working on a package to acquire Orlando swingman Terrence Ross, who has one more year left on his contract, with Dennis Schröder, another player and likely a draft pick headed to the Magic.” With Schroder unlikely to be able to be retained and an imperfect fit coming off the bench with this group of players with the Boston Celtics, just a move could make sense.
And while Ross is having an off season with the Magic from beyond the arc at just 30.8%, he has long shown he can help a team put paints on the board at a high rate in other ways as well.
If the ask were a small one — perhaps something like Schroder, a second-round pick, and Enes Kanter — it would seem an obvious plus for both teams.
Bob
MY NOTE: 1:40 left before the deadline.

1:17 p.m. ET: The Brooklyn Nets are trading James Harden and Paul Millsap to the Philadelphia 76ers for Ben Simmons, Seth Curry, Andre Drummond and two first-round picks, sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Sixers are sending the Nets an unprotected 2022 first-round pick and a protected 2027 first-round pick, sources tell ESPN.

Full trade, according to a league source: Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, 2022 first-round pick protected 1-4, for Derrick White.

MY NOTE: This might be premature but it sounds like SAS fleeced Brad. White, for Josh AND Romeo AND a 1st?!
Good news here is that this has to free up a few minutes for Nesmith.
