haven't heard any bad news so I'm assuming Shaq survived the skeleton work which requires running up and down the floor......good, knock on wood.

Thanks. Tonight you both would have had to be satisfied with Grand Marnier tonight as we invaded the lengendary Les Deux Magots Café.

Yesterday was right up there with the Balloon game as one of the best days ever. We got a brief audience with our mentor, who is age 97 and is now confined to bed, and we presented him with a signed copy of the book along with our profuse thanks for all he has meant to us over the past 15 years of the book's preparation. His daughter, who now runs the bookshop in his stead, first decided he was not up to a meeting, leaving us feeling pretty deflated; but she soon called us back and reversed herself.

George Whitman's dwindling world now consists of a tiny apartment on the third floor of the store (Shakespeare and Company), surrounded by pictures of the greats who have been beneficiaries of mentoring from George and Sylvia Beach (who founded the first iteration of the store around the end of World War I). People like Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, and many of the beat poets.

Our book is dedicated to Sylvia Beach, George, and his daughter, 30-year-old Sylvia Beach Whitman. The dedication reads, "Dedicated to Sylvia Beach, George Whitman, and Sylvia Beach Whitman, spiritual shepherds to the literary flock in the City of Enlightenment."

I started reading the dedication to George, but I totally lost it, and thank goodness Mrs. Sam was able to finish reading it. (Someone has to be the stable one.) George's daughter made a brief video of a portion of the event. George didn't say a lot, but he did brighten up and mention how nice it was to be thanked. He and Sylvia appeared thrilled with both the dedication and the fact that the bookshop is one of six pen-and-ink sketches appearing on the book cover.

All of this probably seems like much ado about very little, but it was very meaningful to both of us....EASILY the highlight of this trip for me, and definitely one of the most treasured moments of my life.Sam

Sam,

I would wager it was a major highlight for George as well.

NYC,

We can only hope so. Sylvia said he really seemed to enjoy himself.

From Redsarmy.com, per Danny Ainge on WEEI:

Danny Ainge shed some light on Shaq's status during his weekly interview on WEEI. So when will he return to the court?

"I wish I had an answer to that one," Ainge said. "He looks better today. There's progress. We're still hopeful that he'll be ready to play but it's just taking longer to heal, or taking a while to heal. Shaq was determined to play Game 1 of the first playoff series and it's just not been that way. He could probably go out and something but I'm not sure he could help much."

Asked if Shaq could play 12 minutes at this point, Ainge said, "Right now he could not give us 12 minutes. We want Shaq healthy. If Shaq could give us 12 minutes in the first game without jeopardizing the following game he would probably be out there doing that but he's not ready to do that yet."

Translation: Shaq is no where close ready to play.

Bob: If it's Paris Texas, it's the birth place of former Baltimore Colt & NFL HOF'er & Patriot coach Raymond Berry!

Bob,

Congratulations. You should be there just before the onslaught tied to the kids' release from school (in both Paris and the U.S.) Daylight least pretty late into the evening. The average high temperature is 70º and the average low is 54º. And June ranks behind only July-Sep. in terms of number of days without precipitation.

We've cleaned out quite a few places, but I believe there's still some food and beer at the second brasserie on the left. Have a great time!

what great good fun to hear you recounting your adventures on your trip --

i am thrilled for you that you and Mrs Sam were so thrilled to be at George's apartment. meeting up with a mentor (again) is always a spiritual moment of great significance, so i don't think for a minute that your story is a lot about just a little thing.

congratulations once again, this time for your most recent coup, getting the book into Shakespeare and Company ...

i'm not a drinker anymore (unlike MG, i don't even have the brandy tucked away in the garage anymore ! <LOL> ) but it is fun to hear about your watering hole adventures, as well as the trip as it goes along. please keep sharing the news !

best, Michael

Thanks, Michael.

I'm making a video of our favorite things in Paris, with the intention of putting it on Youtube. I'll post the URL when it's ready in case anyone's interested. (There will be a load of editing involved because I'll have almost two hours of video by the time we leave Paris on Sunday.) The new Flip videocam is sensational, and I hear they're already discontinuing them.

Thanks again,

Sam

BTW,

Only thing I've seen on Shaq was a scroll on NBATV that he was ready and probably coming off the bench somewhere in the MIA series. Anyone have any more than that?

Here was a pretty good breakdown from ESPN on the series:

Too bad, we could use some hard fouls/wideness in the paint.

Rondo plays well with Shaq offensively too.
