rondo- Bradley- Green- Sulllinger- KG
matty,
Sully ain't runnin' nowhere.
He'll bowl over anybody who gets in Rondo's way, though. Sort of a one-man "student-body left".

thats something along where muh thinking is Bob.. rondo-bradley-green gonna be able to able to go 3 on damn near nobody frequently,, they miss the shot though and swing it out to an incoming 260#er (though i bet he losses 10 lbs before reguler season) and he's gonna clear space.. or jared gets there in time to do a bit of dirty work on the boards along with a nearby KG..
its a lineup thats going to allow us i think to have 3 and 4 guys on the floor capable of beating their man downcourt on a break.. (KG too would be faster than most 5's) the straggler is gonna put the pain to guys willing to take a charge.

matty,
One of my beefs last season was how often we'd forget to box out on the weakside. We'd get caught watching the shot go up and forget there was a guy behind us who wants the ball as much as we do. Sully, based upon all I've heard, is fundamentally sound and Lord knows if he puts his body on someone that player will be boxed out. If all he does is that, and let's KG go for the ball, that'd be an improvement.

I'm hoping Jeff Green is one of the next resigned. He has skills, hops, athleticism and something to prove. I'll bet he comes ready to play after being given a second chance after his heart surgery.

It sounds like he wants to be back here, wants to play for Doc and has bonded with the rest of the players during this tough time. I just think it is how much he is worth right now.

rosalie,
i sort of think the costs we need to consider this yr are less about what it will cost us to keep our guys and more about what it might cost us in mid june of next yr if we dont have them

I agree. This is the money part of the game. Some players will work into the plan on the floor, but don't work with the money available. Some work well with the money available, but don't fit the Celtic's style. This is where Danny earns his money. Good luck to him and to the Celtics. I would like to see another serious run with the Big 4.

Re: Kevin signs 3 yr deal!!!
What's the over/under on how much playing time the rookies get? Word to the wise: watch the summer league games if you want to see Fab and Sully play. When the season starts, you'll see them in blowouts. Hopefully, that will be often.
Bradley made the most of his chance. Next up for the fans, Johnson and Moore get to show what they can do with a bit of injury replacement playing time (Doc's so-called system of bringing young players along).
Both those guys are physically gifted. Maybe I'm wrong but Moore could be a Frank Ramsey-type player off the bench, coming in and firing away. Ramsey would come into games and hit 3 or 4 shots in a minute. He often got hot late in games and, the bigger the game, the hotter he got. Moore could do it. Depends on how much he wants it.
That's the key thing about Danny's draft philosophy: he seems to go for players who have that inner fire. If Sully doesn't have it, I'll be shocked; in interviews on local tv he came off like a young wolf. What I really really want to know is if JJ Johnson has that hunger to win. If there's one big on the team with the speed and athleticism to run alongside Rondo and Bradley, it's Johnson.
So I can wait another year or so to see what Sully and Fab can do, although I think Sully is going to force Doc to play him by toughness in rebounding and blocking out, this summer is when Johnson and Moore state their cases.

rick,
this is the concern that i had predraft, how much playing time would the Rook's get? maybe a lot if we were to rebuild, but as contenders, Melo i think more than Sullinger is gonna spend a lot of his time in that Doc Rivers Rookies time honored tradition of using their butts to wear doen the pine on the benches.
its the same reason i'd hoped we'd either use any of the 1/2 billion picks we got in the next 3 yrs or so and trade up, or trade for a legit Big who could be used even in a starting capacity.
Our defense is gonna be good with the regulers (whoever else it may be) we've had in the past, but damn we need someone who can freaking put up some goshdang points. Jared can do that. so maybe...

Re: Kevin signs 3 yr deal!!!
You don't want or need all five guys to run the break. Conventional wisdom is that you need somebody to get rebounds to start the break, but these days, most breaks are started off long rebounds (which often go to wing players, not post players) and steals. However, what solid, dependable defensive rebounding gets you is the freedom by perimeter players to sneak out and create transition opportunities. Even if it's less than five times a game, that can make a big difference. So if you add typical fast breaks off steals (which that lineup should do well) with 2-3 "conventional" fast breaks started by defensive rebounds and quick outlets, you've got the other team on its heels, running back on defense, and getting fewer offensive rebounds. All good stuff.bobheckler wrote:Matty wrote:as much as i was for trading our picks and even future picks for a player..

Re: Kevin signs 3 yr deal!!!
KG signing for half of what he made last year is going to really help Danny in filling out the roster. It was the right thing for him to do and will cement him as a great Celtic forever. The core roster will be as tough as any in the league. It's clear Doc believes that the regular season means nothing but come playoff time he will field the best team he can. He doesn't need a CoY for everybody to know he is the all around best coach in the NBA right now. Oct 5, right? lol

I think the 3rd year kills the Celtics at a price I am guessing is $10million unless it is front loaded this year. KG becomes a very expensive bench player at that point.

Sam,
I hope not! We will see when terms are announced.
On another note, like the Celtics to sign Kris Humphrey. He and Garnett would be a great combo. Humphrey likes to do all the dirty work...banging and going after rebounds which KG at this point in his career does not and should not be expected to do as much. KG is more like the last line of defense if someone penetrates our paint.
I think Bass failed at that role this year.

Re: Kevin signs 3 yr deal!!!
Interesting signing, but not a total surprise.
I wouldn't worry about his expense at the back end of the contract. He'll probably never see the third year and is more likely to retire after one or two years. I think we can thank the huge contract he signed with Anta Sports for his willingness to take the cut. I'm sure they also like the idea of his remaining active for another year or so.
Looking at the fact that they brought KG back, the players now under contract and the players drafted makes me wonder if a lot of this points to an aggressive attempt to retain Green and Pietrus. They would fit in nicely and provide skills the roster needs at this point. I think perhaps this also closes the door on Ray and Bass because signing them would seem to prevent us from any other free agent activity.
Curious looking roster so far overall, since rebounding is still a need and speed hasn't been addressed; but it's very early. We could also use some outside shooting. I'm not sure this is shaping up to be the roster we'll see by October, however. Makes me wonder what Danny might do next.

Re: Kevin signs 3 yr deal!!!
According to the Boston papers, Danny has said that the next major push is to retain Ray. The interview SOUNDS like they really want him, that they were on the phone at 12:01 am with his agent offering double what Miami is offering, 2 years/12 million. My only thought here is the kicker for Ray will be a no trade contract, since the last two years have been so nerve wracking for him and his family. This is interesting.

rosalie,
Memphis is said to be ready to offer Ray the full $5M mid-level exemption. Ray has also said he wants a multi-year contract. Does Danny want Ray enough to sign him to a >$10M, possibly >$15M, deal?

apparently so Bob, the deal is for 12 mill over two yrs. I'd really hoped that Danny coudl convince both KG and Ray to come back both on 2 yr deals worth 5 mill each, with options for a third yr, so if they all wanted the three amigos could go out together.
still if Ray agree's we'll have 50 Mill or so on the books.. then move onto Green and then Bass.. still need a b/u for Rondo too boot.

Re: Kevin signs 3 yr deal!!!
If they did a multiyear deal they should do it with declining monies just as his skill will no likely be declining. The Celtics cannot get burden themselves with investments on aging, declining players if they want to compete for championships. Ray is needed this year for many reasons, but each year the window for the Big 3 closes faster. There is no guarentee that aging players will stay healthy from year to year. It also takes longer to recover from injuries. When does the gamble become too great?

Re: Kevin signs 3 yr deal!!!
All I know is what I read on the Celtics Blog, that they doubled Miami's offer.
That the offer to him was 2 yrs/12 million dollars. I just feel that unless he gets a no trade clause, it won't happen. The sting is still there from being on the trading block 2 years in a row. I know, this is just business, but I believe in Ray's eyes he has not gotten the respect he deserved here in Boston the last couple of years. I know I am biased, I truly love the guy. However, in my eyes he carried this team in the first half of the season this past year, had a pretty good first half and then got hurt on the Western road trip.
Business is business, I believe Danny will do what is necessary for the TEAM, and if it is too much money, he will let him go.

Danny would have to be out of his mind to offer a multi year contract with a no trade clause to Ray, especially at $6 million and 37 years old.

Ray's gone but now we have more cap space and at least he didn't go to the Heat. I love Ray and wish him the best. Three years for Ray would have been an undue $$ burden for the Celts.
