JAMES YOUNG
Position: Wing
School: Kentucky
Age: 18
Height: 6-foot-7
Weight: 215 pounds
Wingspan: 6-foot-11
Key 2013-14 stats: 14.3 points, 34.9 3PT%, 46.9 2PT%
Scouting report: Highly recruited out of high school, Young failed to meet the expectations set for him at Kentucky. However, he still managed to prove his potential as a go-to scorer with some terrific performances, including his 20 points game in the national title game.
The 18-year-old’s greatest potential comes as a spot-up shooter or as a “triple threat.” Young has great perimeter shooting mechanics, with a fast release and a long wingspan, which allows him to get shots off cleanly. Even though Young lacks high-end athleticism and advanced dribbling moves, he has the potential to be a scorer driving to the basket, as he showed in flashes throughout the season.
Young is an extremely poor defender and rarely stayed in his stance, often appearing disinterested about defending. Pre-draft interviews will be important to determine his willingness to play hard on that end of the floor; players with Young’s offensive skill-set are a dime a dozen, but the ones that can defend even at an average level manage to stick in the league.
A prospect like Young would benefit greatly from time spent learning the game in the D-League. Considering his raw abilities on both ends of the floor, being thrust into action may only stunt his development. But as the fourth-youngest player in the draft, Young has ample time to progress his skills and take advantage of his ideal body for an NBA wing.
How he fits: Young is so far away from making an impact in the NBA that it’s hard to see the Celtics selecting him. Even though the potential is there for him to be a quality scorer, the C’s have said they plan on being competitive next season and Young wouldn’t be able to immediately contribute.
.
A D-League start for Young might help. He's young (no pun) and needs time. Good potential. May help us in the relatively short term, say a season or so.

Chicago with McDermott, Nurkic and Gary Harris.
Wow. Now that's drafting well.

We may have one of the better backcourts around within a short period of time.
Pressey, Bayless.
Yeah, I know they're unguaranteed but they're going to compete.
I wouldn't be shocked if one of those two come back for a season.

Re: Draft Day Thread
Could Young turn into a good swing man? For that matter, could Smart turn into a good combo guard? I'm still searching for positives.
I can only hope this draft is a springboard to rebuilding the Celtics in a very substantial way. I'm not feeling it, but I suppose it could happen. I just have the feeling that, with a lottery pick and a #17 pick in a supposedly loaded draft, I should feel more enthusiasm than I do. So now we're overloaded at two positions but no closer in terms of the team's biggest need.
Okay, Danny, I'm ready for the fireworks to start. Perhaps by using the trade exception before it expires?

Yep.
There are shoes to drop, for sure.
We still need centers, plural.
We are now overloaded at guards.

My gut says Bradley is gone. We'll do a sign-and-trade, maybe plus another player and/or draft pick and he'll get his 6-9M and we'll get someone.

Pagliuca repeats Red Auerbach's "instigator, not retaliator" about Marcus Smart. Said Cs consider Young a steal.

Pags said there was a big cheer in the war room when group found out Young would be available.

Now THAT is a safe bet.
We said the same thing about Sully in 2012 and Kelly in 2013. I say, let it play out. Let the boys play and then we'll know.

Re: Draft Day Thread
I'm part-way to what I've been saying for weeks.
Rondo at point and Smart at 2.
There is a potentially championship quality back-court.
Smart should be a very good NBA 2, and gives us insurance against Rondo departing after next season.
Smart. Very Smart.
Not as sold on Young, but willing to be patient.

Jared Weiss @CLNS_JaredWeiss now
Stevens: James Young has a stroke that is just going to get better and better. We thought he was a very undervalued scoring wing. #Celtics

By the way, I wasn't disparaging the C's picks, just complimenting your choice of brew.

Okay, now that Pags said that, I'm all verklempt. Can't wait for the season to start, and hoping against hope that Danny doesn't mess any more with the ingredients of what could be a monster team.
Goodnight all. If the Celtics pull off a shocker and purchase three or four more wonderful picks in the second round, I look forward to reading about it tomorrow.
I hope it's obvious that all of this was said with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Seeing the tribute to Austin really put this whole thing in perspective.

I wouldn't say it was the reason I moved out here, but it did grease the wheels of thought on it.

NYCelt,
Have you seen Smart play?
Shooting is BY FAR his weakness.
He's a point guard.
Smart shot 30% last year from college 3 point range last year.

Funny line about Toronto's pick Bruno Caboclo on ESPN radio:

The direction of the Celtics is to hope the NBA eliminates the center position.

Re: Draft Day Thread
Wow, did anyone else see the graphic on which drafted PG would have the best NBA career? Smart = something like 44%, Exum = 14%. I assume the poll was conducted among fans, and I assume many more had seen Smart play than Exum.
Boy, Rodney Hood looks really dejected.
