I know this item is not about basketball (in the title of this thread I didn't actually say WHAT league...) but it's my favorite sports story of the day. And will be no matter what happens later!
Lenny Dykstra bounces a $1,000 check to a porn star:

The best part is where she says "I was hired strictly as his companion to have drinks and conversation."
Go Lenny.
Directly to jail where you belong. What a mess that guy's life has become.

Hmm. Maybe the possibility of Tony Allen coming back to the Celtics in a trade with Memphis isn't such a far-fetched idea.
I mean, if it comes down to one or the other, who do you think the Griz are gonna keep? Tony or OJ?
The grass isn't always greener down south, is it Tony?

Brandon Roy to have arthroscopic surgery on both knees.

Wow. This could be the end of a potentially HOF career, nipped in the bud.

Saw this note about the Nets/Lakers game last night in the NY paper:
"Jordan Farmar and Vujacic received undeniably warm receptions from the Lakers crowd. A video tribute to Farmar was played before the game -- right before he got his championship ring. Vujacic also received a film tribute during the first timeout."
I wonder if the video tribute for Vujacic included footage of him getting faked out of his pants by Ray Allen in the closing minute of the 24 point comeback win by the C's in Game 4 of the '08 Finals. Now that was funny.

43 seconds of the 1 minute montage were pictures of him playing with his hair. The other 17 seconds were of Maria Sharapova.

While back there was a bit of buzz on here about taking a shot at Toine
read this on Yahoo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Walker disappoints
The D-League Showcase took place this week in South Padre, Texas, giving Antoine Walker(notes) of the Idaho Stampede a chance to impress NBA scouts.
Or not.
One NBA scout on hand said Walker was out of shape and he doesn’t expect him to get another crack at the NBA. With scouts and NBA front-office executives watching, Walker had seven points on 2-of-13 shooting (1-of-6 3-pointers), 10 turnovers and four fouls in 35 minutes against Erie on Tuesday.
some things are best remembered! Some moves are best when they are not made.

Duncan suffers an injured knee 1/24/11.
It's not yet known how serious the injury may be. Of the top contenders this season, the Spurs have played far more minutes than the others with their starting unit intact.

Doesn't seem to be serious. He came back and played well in the second half:
"Duncan went down with a left knee injury in the second quarter that had the entire Spurs bench stunned and shaken. He returned to finish with 16 points and seven rebounds, helping San Antonio rebound from a loss to New Orleans and calm any nerves about what initially appeared to be a serious fall."

According to Ball Don't Lie's Eric Freeman, Kobe Bryant's clutch rep is overblown.
Here is a key excerpt:
By the numbers, Kobe makes a little less than one of every three shots when his team is down two, down one, or tied on the final possession, which makes him one of the worst performers among players with at least 30 attempts in those situations. Kobe also rates poorly in all situations in the final five minutes or overtime.

I can't believe the Bulls have the 2nd best record in the East and have been doing it without their version of KG,Noah, that team is gonna be a serious load come playoff time.Ledunce should have went there,he would have had a way stronger team......actually now glad he didn't.

Re: Random thoughts from around the league (An Onging Thread)
Bonehead play of the year: Was watching the end of the Memphis/Orlando game and couldn't believe Dwight Howard got a technical foul with his team down by one with 5 seconds to go. That free throw, plus another by Mike Conley, made the Magic need a three-pointer to tie instead of a two and they wound up losing 100-97.
Who risks getting a T at that stage of a close game? I guess Dwight feels no one should T up superman no matter how much he complains. Idiot.
And I thought Odom fouling Glen Davis shooting a three from 50 feet away was dumb. This was dumber because, as opposed to Odom, Dwight had more than a split second to think about what he was doing.

Re: Random thoughts from around the league (An Onging Thread)
Old friend Tony Allen had a huge night filling in for injured Rudy Gay in Memphis' OT win in Oklahoma City last night, scoring 27 points in 40 starter's minutes (on 9 for 12 shooting) "while harassing NBA scoring leader Kevin Durant as the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 105-101 in overtime Tuesday night," according to the Memphis paper. With Allen guarding him, Durant "got off just one shot in overtime and also had a key turnover in the final 20 seconds with the Thunder down by three."
We could use a defender like him at this point in time.

saw TA in the game against Lakers and even though his team lost, his defense on Kobe was stellar,Danny goofed for the extra half mill or so he wanted, would've been worth it....could you imagine him and Delonte coming off the bench?plus TA can harass 3's

That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is that Tony is the one who goofed. Maybe Tony, Ariza, and Posey can get together and form a club.cowens/oldschool wrote:Danny goofed for the extra half mill or so he wanted, would've been worth it...

Can't remember ever seeing a box score where both starting guards scored 0 points as Minnesota's Brewer and Flynn did tonight against the Blazers:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/boxscore;_ylt=AnIR.ZAYugzQhBdg5wospiC8vLYF?gid=2011021416
And starting small forward Wes Johnson contributed a big 1 point. 1 total point from three of your starters. It's a shame Kevin Love has to lace 'em up next to such a sorry cast of characters.

Re: Random thoughts from around the league (An Onging Thread)
Yesterday's LA/SA game showed why I don't think SA has any chance of getting out of the West if all players are healthy.
SA's top 4 forwards/centers (Duncan/Jefferson/Blair and Bonner) will get destroyed by Gasol/Bynum/Odom and Artest.
6'7" Blair playing against a healthy Bynum is a clear mismatch for LA. Bonner has no game other then 3 point shooting.
Bynum is healthy and looks much more athletic then he has at any time this year. He said he still wants to lose a little weight this year. He was lumbering after he came back but looks great now.
Kobe is healthy and outside of losing some of his explosiveness, he is playing as well as he has in the last couple of years.
Outside of Bynum and Barnes LA has been very lucky staying away from injuries.
As we saw yesterday, LA will play 9 unless there is a blowout or foul trouble.
I even put Dallas ahead of SA.
In the East it is Boston, Chicago and Miami. No shock there.

Re: Random thoughts from around the league (An Onging Thread)
and you base this on one game?
Wow. Well time will tell but i dont think i would write off the spurs over one game.
If that was the case the Lakers should be well behind the spurs a team thats beaten other good teams while the Lakers have failed again and again and again and again. The Spurs have the best record in the nba and they have earned that. But its good to see that the seven game winning streak has put a little steel in laker spines thats been missing all season as the losses mounted. But probably the wind will blow tomorrow and that will change.
Geeze louise.

Re: Random thoughts from around the league (An Onging Thread)
jeb,
The best record in the league means nothing.
Ask Cleveland about that over the last 2 years.
Tell me why you think SA could/will beat LA if they play in the Western Conf Finals. Bynum is the key to the Lakers success. If he continues to play like he has been defensively, SA has no chance. 3 good guards are not going to lead SA to the Finals. Duncan/Blair/Bonner/Jefferson are either too old or undersized or both.
If Perkins is healthy, I will put money on OKC beating SA in round 2.
Why don't you talk about SA's body language?

Re: Random thoughts from around the league (An Onging Thread)
I think I'll split the difference.
Having seen the Spurs on multiple occasions this year, they easily had the worst game I've seen yesterday against the Lakers. Their main guys (Parker, Ginobli, Duncan) didn't produce, and their other guys were off. Everything that makes the Spurs a top team was missing, and they got blown out. But this was just one game. In the playoffs, Popovich is as good as they come at absorbing a bad loss and turning a team around.
Having said that, the Lakers do have a major advantage over the Spurs, which is their size up front. If the Lakers get their heads screwed on straight and exploit that advantage, they're the favorite. But I'd still like to see what happens when both teams play their best.

Re: Random thoughts from around the league (An Onging Thread)
I saw the spurs miss a ton of open shots. The Lakers made everything they threw up. There are games like that in the nba but never series. The best team wins a 7 game series every time. The best way to gauge a team is how they perform in big games. The lakers have shat the bed all year. This win streak is the best they have played and the road does not get any easier for them. They have a massive size advantage over every team they play but it is dainty soft size and they are very prone to jump shooting which indicates laziness or stupidity.
I saw your other post as well guy commenting on aspects of the Celtics weakness and I actually concur with many of them. But the Celtics are going to get way better with time. The lakers are an entitled spoiled bunch of guys and pretty much what you see is what you get. The lakers like the yankees always have the best talent because they spend the most. The Lakers had home court advantage in every series last year and would never have beat Boston without it. The lakes may rise up and take it all this year they are certainly good enough but i dont think so. They have been incredibly lucky for an old team and luck ends. If we keep homecourt i think the celtics beat the lakers handily this year. But its all speculation. Any way pallie crow on...enjoy your teams 7 game winning streak where they have actually beaten 3 good teams you had to wait the whole season on it. Enjoy your teams incredible good health but do it humbly. Watch out for pride pal. Trust me it can all change pretty quick.
