Kentucky Colonels

Spirits of St. Louis

Virginia Squires folded after the season ended, but before the NBA-ABA merger was announced.

Utah (LA?) Stars folded on Dec. 2, 1975 due to the owner running out of money and not making payroll. They finished with a record of 4-12.

San Diego Sails folded in Nov. 12, 1975. They finished with a record of 3-8.

Max in 81

Bird in 84 and 86

Pierce in 08.

Of course, the NBA Finals MVP award wasn't started until 1969, Russ's last year, when Jerry West won the first award (the only player in the history of the NBA to win the award and be on the losing team). I think if the Finals MVP award had started when the NBA first started having Finals the Celtics might have picked up a few more of them.

You got it. I wonder how much of the vote for West was due to sympathy, since the Lakers lost once again.

You are right that there would be more Celtics on the list had the award been invented earlier. Ten championships by the Celtics without any MVP's being awarded.

Yes.

Chris Ford, who played for the Boston Celtics at the time, scored the first three-point basket in NBA history on October 12, 1979 in a game against the Houston Rockets at the Boston Garden. Two years later, Ford was part of the 1981 Celtics NBA Championship team. In 1990, he became head coach of the Celtics, a position he held for five years during which he led his team to the NBA playoffs four times. Ford later went on to coach the Milwaukee Bucks and L.A. Clippers.

Wilt Chamberlain was named MVP and Rookie of the Year in the 1959-1960 NBA season as a player for the Philadelphia Warriors. During that same season, Chamberlain set new NBA records in scoring (37.6 points averaged per game) and rebounding (27 per game), and was also named MVP of the NBA All-Star Game.

Wes Unseld would become the second NBA player to win both awards in the same year during the 1968-1969 NBA season. Unseld was drafted by the Kentucky Colonels in the 1968 ABA draft and was drafted second overall in the first round by the Baltimore Bullets in 1968, and helped lead the Bullets (who had finished in last place in the Eastern division the previous year) to a 57-25 record and a division title. Unseld averaged 18.2 rebounds per game that year, and became only the second player ever to win both MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season. Unseld was also named the Sporting News MVP that year. He was one of the best defensive players of his era.
