Re: The Official Free Agents and Trades 2010 Offseason thread
gyso,
Nate's situation in NY was a little complicated. He lost his Bird Rights when he signed a 1 year contract with NY in September 2009. NY paid Nate a higher salary then what they could have offered him as a qualifying offer as they didn't want him to be a base year comp player going into this summer.
This was from an article fromn 12/21/09: After reading it over a few times, I am still a little confused.
• Robinson has the right to veto any trade (because he would be forfeiting his Larry Bird rights by accepting a trade), and as unhappy as he is, at the end of the day he'd rather sulk at the end of the bench in New York than battle Wayne Ellington for spot minutes in Minnesota. One source close to the Knicks said the list of teams that Robinson would accept a trade to could be described as "slim and/or none."
• Robinson also is what's known as a base-year compensation player, a designation given to any player whose salary rises more than 20 percent from the previous season (Robinson went from making $2.02 million to $4 million). If the Knicks found a trade for Robinson that was to his liking, they could only take back a player making $2.02 million or less -- and Walsh has been adamant that he will not take on any contracts that eat up the cap space he has squirreled away for next summer. A Robinson-Marquis Daniels swap -- possibly brokered through a third team -- would make more sense for New York payroll-wise, but it is questionable whether that would interest the Celtics -- even with Daniels sidelined until the All-Star break by thumb surgery.)
• Robinson cannot be traded until Dec. 24 -- 90 days after he signed his contract, when the Knicks gave him a deal more than $1 million above what he would have had to accept under New York's qualifying offer, in large part to assure he would not have a base-year designation next summer.
• By waiving his trade veto, accepting a trade and thereby forfeiting his Bird rights, Robinson would preclude himself from being a part of any sign-and-trade deal the Knicks might make next summer to reel in a top-tier free agent. And if he returns to the rotation in March and April, that'll be the time for Robinson to establish greater financial value.

Re: The Official Free Agents and Trades 2010 Offseason thread
tj,
When he signed the 1 year contract in '09 for more than the QO, perhaps that made it the equivalent of a free agent signing. That could reset his Bird rights, I guess.
If the Knicks were under the sal-cap at the time, perhaps they could get around the QO in that fashion and pay him more than a cap-strapped team could.
The Knicks didn't want him to be a BYC player this summer because that may get in the way of using assets (dumping salary) to get even lower in total team salary? That could be part of it.
Very confusing, to say the least. Upon the third read-through, I noticed this inconsistancy:
He lost his Bird Rights when he signed a 1 year contract with NY in September 2009
vs.
Robinson has the right to veto any trade (because he would be forfeiting his Larry Bird rights by accepting a trade)
That certainly clears things up in my mind...
Thanks for trying to help.

There is a rumor out there of Turkoglu to LAL for Vujacic and Walton.

It passes the TradeChecker:
http://www.realgm.com/src_tradechecker/3/
(the link doesn't work when I used it, but the trade did)
This helps LA, does nothing for the Raptors, IMO.

Gets Toronto out from under a long 4 year contract.
They missed the playoffs with Bosh and Turk. Can't be too much worse then they were already...

TJ, man I would HATE to see that trade happen. Imagine him playing the point, as he did for Orlando after Nelson's injury, in THAT line-up. Gasol, Kobe, Bynum, Artest or Odum and Turkoglu on the floor together, no thanks!

He would also be a nice back up for Artest.
There might not be anything to it, but I did hear the rumor in 2 places.

TJ, he is perfect for the triangle offense also, think toni kucoc (sp?) with a Steve Kerr, John Paxson stroke. And at 6-10 he would be a match up nightmare for a team thats already one anyway. As much as I would hate to see it , I think that would bring about a 3peat .

Toronto is getting taken for a ride this off season. How did that is that Bosh sign and trade work out?

Turk to LA is only a rumor. Toronto needs to cut salary and build up draft picks.
There was nothing they could do about Bosh wanting to leave.

tj
if that happens you guys win it barring injuries. I cant believe Toronto would do it but Red used to do that to poor or stupid teams all the time. You guys have a lot of very good fortune recently.

Kind of flies in the face of the numerous posts when you lectured us on how the Lakers were the best fit for Bosh - and he would join them in a sign and trade.

I never said Toronto would S&T Bosh to LA. That was a rumor that was started near the trade deadline.
Of the 5 teams that Bosh had on his wish list (Tor/Chi/NY/Mia and LAL) LA had the best piece to make that work.
It looks like Bosh is going to sign with Miami and not be a part of a sign and trade.
My position was that I would be happy if LA would get Bosh but would be happy to keep Bynum.
I don't know if LA wanted to commit to giving Bosh $120+m.
That would be a huge commitment for a team that has done fine without him.

It is being reported that Randy Foye and Ryan Gomes will be signing with the Clippers. Gomes deal is for 3 years at $12m.

Knicks’ Lee headed to Warriors in sign-and-trade
NEW YORK (AP)—The agent for David Lee says the All-Star forward is heading from the New York Knicks to the Golden State Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal.
Mark Bartelstein says Lee will get a six-year, $80 million contract. The Knicks will receive forwards Anthony Randolph, Kelenna Azubuike and Ronny Turiaf.
Lee has been the Knicks’ most popular and productive player under coach Mike D’Antoni, but the team wouldn’t commit to signing him so it could preserve enough salary cap room to afford two maximum salary players.
The Knicks gave one of those contracts to Amare Stoudemire, who signed Thursday and plays the same position as Lee.

I guess that shows that Lee could not be signed for the MLE amount.

Why get rid of this guy? I don't understand them? Who is out there unless they can make another trade.

Minnesota just traded for Beasley.
Beasley and a 2nd round pick to Minnesota for nothing.
Chalmbers is only player under contract.
What is that now 7 PF's for Minnesota? Last year it was PG's. Now it is PF's.

NY Daily News grades the teams for their free-agent acquisitions (even though a few have yet to sign anywhere):

Derek Fisher remains a Laker . . . for life, it would appear:
It took 12 days and some give-and-take on the financial front, but the Lakers and Derek Fisher just weren’t ready to part ways.
The Lakers agreed to terms on a three-year contract with the veteran guard, bringing back a steadying locker-room influence and one of their top clutch shooters of the last decade. The contract was believed to be worth about $10.5 million, including a player option in the third year.
