Rudy Gay Is Reportedly Requesting A Trade From The Kings
By Tony Xypteras @TonyXypteras on Jul 8, 2016, 3:25p 257
Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports
Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee reported earlier this afternoon that Rudy Gay has requested a trade from the Sacramento Kings.

We've heard similar rumblings in the past about Gay's unhappiness with the Kings, but Voisin's tweet is a huge jump from speculation of unhappiness to a formal trade request.
On one hand, Gay's desire to play elsewhere makes some sense. He signed an extension with the Kings just weeks before Michael Malone was fired, and his tenure as a King has only gone downhill from there. He was a solid, efficient offensive contributor under Malone, and after a poor year under George Karl's leadership, a trade could do him some good.
On the other hand, the Kings just hired one of his former coaches in Memphis, Dave Joerger, and while Joerger's hiring didn't stop the Rudy Gay trade rumors, I did think that hire would, at the very least, improve Sacramento's standing in Rudy Gay's mind, and give him some optimism for his future in Sacramento.
Voisin's report came just minutes after ESPN's Marc Stein reported that the Kings are actively shopping Rudy Gay, Kosta Koufos, and Ben McLemore.

At any rate, it's starting to feel like Rudy Gay's relationship with the Kings has soured to the point of no return, and I'm sure now that Voisin has made Gay's trade request public, it will only get worse.
Voisin has a knack for dropping major news items like this in a fairly nonchalant manner, so I want to at least keep the door open to the possibility that this is news Voisin had heard under previous circumstances, and it just sort of slipped out now. It's an odd time to request a trade if this just happened, and an even odder time to make public if the Kings are actually trying to trade him like Stein suggests. It doesn't exactly do anything for Gay's trade value, and if Gay's value is lowered by the publication of his request, it only decreases the likelihood that the Kings move him.
I don't know, something about how this slipped out the way that it did feels dubious. Stay tuned.
UPDATE:
Sean Cunningham of News10 has a conflicting report, saying there has never been a formal trade request by Rudy. Hrm.

MY NOTE: Rudy Gay will make $13.3M this year and has a player option for $14.2M next year. His 30th birthday is 8/17. He is a career 45% shooter, 34.4% from 3. He has averaged 34-35mpg his two years in Sacto. There is no way he'd get that many minutes here. I say 'no'. Not because he's not good, but because he's a starter, somewhere, but not here.

The Brooklyn Nets are trying very hard to win more games next season and avoid giving the Boston Celtics the top selection in a loaded 2017 draft. The team's latest venture will reportedly include former No. 1 overall draft pick Anthony Bennett.

Many have (fairly) noted that at some point, it's not productive to point out exactly when players were drafted, especially when they are off their rookie contracts. Evan Turner, for example, was the No. 2 pick in the 2010 draft, and while he wasn't productive enough to warrant the second overall pick, he has still become a solid NBA player.
Anthony Bennett is yet to become a productive player, and frankly, he may never get to that point. Still, he's just 23, and the same reasons he was drafted first overall — athleticism and the ability to become a small-ball power forward — are the same reasons Brooklyn is willing to take a (two-year mostly contractually guaranteed) chance on him.
But Bennett has shown nothing that indicates he'll be able to contribute at the NBA level to this point. He struggled to break into Cleveland's rotation after being selected No. 1, and with seemingly dwindling confidence and playing time, he was dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of the Andrew Wiggins deal. Bennett was bought out by the Wolves, after which he joined the Toronto Raptors, who released him in March.
The Nets are desperately trying to fill their roster at this point, and Bennett represents an opportunity to take a shot — perhaps the final shot of Bennett's NBA career — on a medium-upside acquisition. Whether he is able to capitalize on that shot remains unclear, and probably doubtful.
Brooklyn also signed Randy Foye on Thursday, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Every completed 2016 NBA free agent signing in one place

The NBA's 2016 free agency period has been long anticipated because of the massive jump in salary cap from $70 million to a number now projected to be $94 million. Most teams around the league will be flush with cap space and looking to throw big dollars around, which will result in eye-popping contracts for a number of players.
Kevin Durant was the biggest prize, but while many believed Durant would re-sign for at least one more run with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 2014 MVP instead signed with their biggest rivals in the Golden State Warriors.
His decision set the wheels in motion for the rest of free agency, as the losers of the Durant sweepstakes turned to their backup plans. Other teams not in the chase actually struck early as Durant suitors waited on him.
But free agency did finish with fireworks, thanks to Dwyane Wade. After a series of contentious negotiations with the Heat, Wade made the stunning decision to leave to sign with his hometown Chicago Bulls. That put a bow on what proved to be a wild free agency period.
Here's a list of every move this summer, in order:

Sources on @TheVertical: Oklahoma City has rescinded qualifying offer on Dion Waiters, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

MY NOTE: He went from starting in Cleveland and starting in OKC to being an UFA because his cheap qualifying offer was rescinded. Apparently that doesn't just happen to fat players. You'd think that, with the loss of Durant, OKC would be more inclined to keep a scorer. That is a red flag to me.

Yup, OKC would be inclined to keep a scorer. But Waiters is not a scorer. Unless you add the word occasionally.

Deal shows how little teams value him.

I guess that it is time to cast this thread adrift. I plan to un-sticky this thread, now that the free agency period has run its course.
Anyone care to make any last comments?
