Re: 2016 Free Agency Tracker and Rumors
Ram wrote:Three observations I find interesting:
1. Shaq made 55.75 million the first four years of that huge contract he signed with LA when he left Orlando in 1996. Mozgov just signed with LA for 4 years 64 million.
2. Garnett signed the largest contract of all-time 2 years later, one that crippled the Wolves ability to put talent around him, and he was paid out 72 million his first 4 years. Whiteside just got 4 years 98 million.
Yikes, things are pretty crazy out there...
3. The Celtics do not have to reach the 85m cap floor. The penalty for not doing so simply means Wyc has to cut a check for the amount they are under and divide it equally among the 15 players on the roster. So if they come in at 70 million then our underpaid top players like Bradley, Crowder and Thomas all get an extra 1 million, which could help appease any negative feelings on missing out on this market. While for young guys like Mickey, Bentil, Jackson and Hunter who all were at one time thought to likely be drafted higher than they were, that could double their salaries and make a HUGE difference to them and their families as they settle into lives as pro ball players.
Ram,
Actually, it's not so bad. If you look at it with Mozgov, for example, that's less than a 1% per year increase over what Shaq got, when compounded annually. In other words, for Shaq's contract to have kept pace with a 2.5% annual inflation rate since then, that contract would have to be almost $92 million now.
So when considering inflation, Mozgov at $64 million versus Shaq at $92 million (in today's dollars), the contract seems about right.
Of course, if you're saying no way Mozgov is as valuable now as Shaq was then, I completely agree. Other than that I think some of the numbers are just inflation over time. I suspect the new TV contract is going to help inflate contracts from here forward, too.
I guess I'm just happy for the opportunity to have my income increase more than 1% per year since '96. I mean, come on, how's Mozgov going to feed his family on that tiny sum?
Regards

Great response. I think that proves things are a bit screwy when Whiteside and Shaq are basically viewed as being worth the same when inflation is taken into account. 1996 Shaq is WAY better than 2016 Whiteside, but both are getting contracts of similar value even when considering the different times they lived in (Shaq did get 7 years, not 4 b/c of that wacky CBA that caused the 1999 lockout).
Mozgov is making 70% or so of what Shaq's salary in 2015 terms would be. I would not say he is 70% of the player, haha. Perhaps this shows LA's desperation. Even in this summer of exploding contracts I can't see Mozgov being worth more than the 12m annual value Amir Johnson and Omer Asik signed last summer. But I guess LA views him as the same impact big as those guys and with the cap increasing by like 20% that is similar to how much bigger Mozgov's contract is compared to Asik's.
I bring up the 1996 offseason because I remember it being similar to this as far as players signing unheard of deals before and an explosion of money coming into the league. It is interesting to see the contract breakdowns then vs. now: Shaq's contract (7/121) vs. a player I'd say was 80% as good as him at the time (Mourning) getting 7/105 and a player 60% as good as him (Mutombo) getting 5/50. Those numbers are pretty much in line with the talent when you start at the top.
These days, due to max contracts and 4-5 year deals it is different. If Whiteside and Horford get 4/100, then Howard should get 4/80, young one dimensional rim-protectors like Biyombo and Ezeli 4/60, older broken down guys teams doubt will ever return to their form of 2-3 years ago like Noah and Al Jefferson 2/30 and guys like Mozgov, Mahinmi and Pachulia, who are all just half the player Al Horford is, like 4/50. But it doesn't appear to be breaking out into those kind of tiers that the fans can be comfortable with, which reminds me a lot of 1996.

MY NOTE: Miles Turner to the bench? Al Jefferson to replace Ian Mahinmi? My guess is a big lineup of Jefferson and Turner and Mahinmi is gone.

Re: 2016 Free Agency Tracker and Rumors
NY, how does the 7 year 126 million deal Garnett signed in 1998 compare to the 5 year 154 million deal Anthony Davis signed in 2015 when inflation is taken into account?
I consider both guys to be generational talents at a similar age and position and therefore worthy of the most money a team can realistically (or collectively bargained) give them.
However, the 22.5 million Davis is set to receive next year is only 24% of the salary cap. As his contract increases 2-3 million a year the cap is expected to go up 10 million or so a year. So he'll remain 25% of his teams income. More than reasonable for an all-star. A bargain for a top 10 player.
KG on the other hand made 16.8-19.6-22.4-25.2 million over the 4 seasons from 1999-2003 when the salary caps were between 34-40 million per year. A cap crippling deal where he takes up 55-65% of the payroll under the CBA that was put into place in 1999.
It would appear the NBA has solved such issues at this point. Guys like Durant and LeBron will make 35-40 million over the next few years, but the cap will be 105-115 million and they won't come close to accounting for even 50% of their teams payroll.

Indiana really going after it Jefferson has slipped but is still a talent to have on your team. His biggest issue is he just does not play good defense. Can block shots here and there. How old is he now anyway?

USA Today's Sam Amick wrote, "DeMar DeRozan has decided to re-sign with the Toronto Raptors." He later revealed that the deal is for approximately $145 million over five years.

MY NOTE: Too bad. Losing DeRozan would have really taken the Raptors down off their perch.

What do you make of that signing?
And in the bigger context, do you think that takes GSW out of the Durant Sweepstakes?
