Boston Celtics draft 2019: After win over Sacramento Kings, here are five draft prospects to watch
Updated Mar 7, 9:20 AM; Posted Mar 7, 8:05 AM
By Tom Westerholm | twesterh@masslive.com
SACRAMENTO -- The Boston Celtics defeated the Sacramento Kings 111-109 on Wednesday, after Gordon Hayward’s leaning transition jumper propelled the Celtics to their second consecutive much-needed victory.
The Celtics helped themselves twice with the win. First and foremost, they improved to 40-26, closing the gap with the Philadelphia 76ers to 1.5 games after Philly lost to the Chicago Bulls.
Second, the Celtics dropped Sacramento a little further in the standings. Since the Celtics own the Kings pick (top-one protected courtesy of the 76ers), every Kings loss at this point is important.
As things stand, the Kings are solidly in 14th -- four games behind the Los Angeles Clippers, and 2.5 games ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers. So here are five players projected to go in that range worth keeping an eye on as the college basketball season stretches on.
BRANDON CLARKE, GONZAGA
There’s a reasonable chance Clarke ends up higher in the lottery, given his athleticism, frame and potential for defensive versatility. Clarke’s ceiling is a rim protector who can switch onto essentially any position defensively while knocking down pick-and-pop jumpers at the next level.
KEVIN PORTER, USC
Danny Ainge likes to swing for the fences (see Williams, Robert), and Porter would be a home-run swing. He was one of the best players in his high-school class, and he remains one of the more intriguing scorers at the collegiate level despite missing extended time for USC. Given his athleticism and potential as a scorer, the Celtics could see Porter as a player who can contribute off the bench in the short term with starter potential down the line.
KELDON JOHNSON, KENTUCKY
Could Keldon Johnson fall to the 14th pick? To be quite honest, probably not. But a lot of mock drafts have the Kentucky guard falling a bit, and if he does, the Celtics might be very interested. Johnson has an incredibly high motor, and he’s a solid athlete. Add in his surprisingly good 3-point shooting at the college level (38.4 this season), and perhaps teams are undervaluing one of the highest-rated recruits coming out of high school.
P.J. WASHINGTON, KENTUCKY
Washington has been one of the best players in the NCAA this season. A 6-foot-8 forward with one of the most devastating post games in college hoops, Washington has hit 43.5 percent of his triples. If Washington can switch and stretch the floor at the next level, his old-school game might actually translate well to the modern NBA.
COBY WHITE, NORTH CAROLINA
Looking for a potential Terry Rozier replacement? Look no further than White, who is shooting 37.8 percent from three on 6.5 attempts per game. White will be able to get buckets in a variety of ways at the NBA level, and the Celtics could use a player of his caliber as a point-of-attack lead ball-handler.
Of course, the Kings pick -- being in the lottery -- has the potential to jump up. If it does, this entire conversation changes, but if it doesn’t, the Celtics could still find themselves well within range of some impressive young players.

Re: 2019 NBA Draft
White at 14 might be nice...if he's there.
I have touted Washington here before as a favorite of mine but more at our own pick late in the first round.
maybe he moves up who knows, long time before the draft. But he has long arms and reminds me a little of Brandon Bass. If he can be that type of NBA players he'd be a nice pick in the late first for sure.

As of 3/5/19 update, nbadraft.net has Boston picking Coby White @ #14.

6'11 1/2" in sneakers, 7' 1/4" wingspan, 236#, 19 years old. 13.85% body fat in last year's NBA Combine. Coming off an ACL injury.
ESPN has Boston picking Bol Bol @ #14 (mynbadraft.com had LAL taking him @ 13).
7'3", 7'8" wingspan, 236#, 19 years old.
As of 3/5/19 update, Bleacher Report has Boston taking Jontay Porter @ #14.
As of 2/28/19 update, Sports Illustrated has Boston taking Keldon Johnson @ #14.

Re: 2019 NBA Draft
Porter and bol Bol should both be no. Injured guys are red flags. Plus we do not necessarily need to draft a center. A replacement for TR and MM seems to be our top 2 needs.
That of course is my opinion. However if a can't miss center fell to us than okay take him. This draft however looks strong for wings and guards but not for frontline guys.

Re: 2019 NBA Draft
Matisse Thybulle supposedly has a 1st round promise. Pulled out of the combine. Cs do make sense considering he’s a rangy, wing player who is a strong defender and that there are 3 1st round picks. If his outside shot becomes consistent, he’d be a solid rotational player.

That is a fairly big jump but in some ways I am not surprised. Kabengele has some talent. these draft boards however do not look at teams needs.
This appears to be a weak draft for PG

Yea. Looks like White and Garland in the top 10 and Alexander-Walker in the teens. Then there are few who could go in the 20s or 2nd round.

Im not sure. Maybe they were looking at him as a PF and in terms of switchability on the perimeter. I see his best value as a center.

Draft nets says he is not very quick or athletic...what film were they watching
Im not sure. Maybe they were looking at him as a PF and in terms of switchability on the perimeter. I see his best value as a center.

Seems to be able to score some in the post but can also stretch the floor. I see he was a bench player at 21 MPG. I think Boston should be able to find a decent player at 14.

What do you think about ty Jerome the PG from Virginia. does not look to be particulary fast but seems to know how to run the point and he can make shots

Most players in college have no idea who the F Vin Baker is.
So you say to the kid, "you remind me of Vin Baker"
The kid says "WHO"?

He actually led the team in scoring and was 5th in minutes. Florida st was a deep team, spread out it’s minutes.
