Even Barkley knows if you aren't a good 3 point shooter then don't shoot them. So many players shoot bad 3 point shots and probably shouldn't shoot them anyway. Pops doesn't let his guys fire away, they take good 3 point shots . Thats why they have the highest percentage in the league.

Can't make them - don't take them. It also works for Ben Simmons - as he has the 3rd highest EFG this year amongst guards and guard-forwards that played in at least 41 games, averaged at least 30 mimutes per game and had at least 12 FGA per game.

Re: 2019 Playoff Thread
Saw some of Denvers playoff games and it was the first time I saw Jokic play recently.
he reminds me or Arvidis Sabonis!
he is bigger and thicker and any one on the floor and can pass and rebound with most anyone (Like Sabonis Sr)
anyone else see some comparison there?

Smaller, yes. More skilled? Arvydas Sabonis was the most skilled big man I've ever seen. Considering that includes Cowens, KG and Bill Walton that says a whole lot. We didn't get to see him until he was old and damaged. Find some old tapes of him when he was with the Soviet team if you really need to get your mind blown.

Those Russkies beat the USA in the Olympics on disputed calls and time clock management, but still, to beat the USA? Arbonis was the reason.
Re: 2019 Playoff Thread
typos in my post there (as usual)
I meant Jokic was bigger and thicker than all the other players in the court.
not that he is bigger than Sabonis was.
that size and his skill set does remind me of the Russian big man , especially his passing .

Kdp,
Since you're talking about typos. Sabonis is not Russian, he's Lithuanian.

I thought he was Russian. My bad, But he did play for Russia in the Olympics, no?
Re: 2019 Playoff Thread
Worcester,
He played for USSR. He didn't have much of a choice: play for the national team or not play at all.
Only after the collapse of USSR he could play for his actual national team Lithuania.

Sinus, the Russkies could be very persuasive during the Soviet era. No wonder he played for them.

Have to give credit to Ben Simmons and his coaching staff. He just played his best playoff game in his career to this point, punishing anyone who wants to mix it up with him on his drives to the hoop and his defense has been excellent especially when matched up with DeAngelo Russell....

I can't figure why some fans have been on his back - point guard talent with his high assists while rebounding like a forward - exceptionally high efg for a point guard - all at the age of 22. Ok - I know - it"s his 3 point shooting - but it's probally the same people that have a history of pleading with other shooters (that have been dismal 3 point shooters) to refrain from firing away from deep. Already he gets it - as he's only taken 18 thus far in his 2 year career.

If playoffs count for most improved player, Pascal Siakim making a strong case, having a breakout playoff so far with 30 points 11 rebounds, 3-4 from 3 last night....

With all do respect I disagree with your assessment. But I want to give you reason to look a bit closer.
Sabonis came over from Europe at age 31. He was not better than Cowens, KG or Walton. He only played in the NBA for 7 season
His best NBA season at age 33 was 1997-1998. He averaged 16 PPG, 10 rebounds and 3 assists.
Walton was a shadow of his former self at age 33 so it is impossible to compare the two. As a matter of fact no one can say how good Sabonis was as compared to NBA centers that played over an extended period of time.
With respect to Dave Cowens his career average was 17.6 PPG, 13.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists.
There was nothing remotely unique about Sabonis other than the fact that he was the first high profile Euro center that had NBA level talent.
I also looked at Jokic. He has been playing for 4 years but is only 24 years old. I think he is definitely better than Sabonis and I agree with Cowens that he is more skilled.
This year he averaged 20 PPG, 10.8 Rebounds and 7.3 assists. Real tough to compare Sabonis to these other guys because of the age factor when he started his NBA career. But there is zero evidence based on the body of work in the NBA that supports Sabonis being the most skilled big man of the group you named.

Re: 2019 Playoff Thread
Before doing a skill comparison it might be a good idea to establish the standards as to what constitutes a big man. There's been a huge difference in the style of play that's taken place over the decades - with size, shooting, and ball handling skills drastically effecting the changing roles of the bigs. It might be best to limit the comparisons to a generational time frame

I’m gonna predict the first upset, I predict Nets will beat 76ers, Russell, Dinwiddie and Lavert will all have big series....and 76ers will play tight. BROOOOKKKLYYNNN BROOOOKKKLYYNNN BROOOOKKKLYYNNN!!!!!!
Losing both games at home by Brooklyn has probably sunk your prediction.
Today’s game was a great game!
3-1 Philly.

Re: 2019 Playoff Thread
Right they have the talent to win, just didn’t execute down the stretch, not experienced enough to win playoff basketball, they blew today’s game...Lavert is stud in the making in the mold of a Tatum/Brown and DR can dominate guards, but now they are putting their best wing defenders on him, that is going to continue.tjmakz wrote:cowens/oldschool wrote:I thought we could congregate here with observations or predictions of this years playoffs.
