Buyout/ Trade Deadline Approaching - Page 4 Empty Re: Buyout/ Trade Deadline Approaching

Bold prediction: No Celtic moves by the trade deadline. Zero.

OK, that's not so bold and I've said that in other threads for weeks now.

I will repeat the greatest need remains bigs. Specifically, let's say centers and not fours playing the five.

Then again we've needed bigs ever since Kendrick Perkins left. Think about it for a moment. Arguably, the last true centers of any significant note the Celtics had were Kendrick Perkins preceded by Al Jefferson. Prior to that you have to go back to the 1980s. Perk was traded away in February of 2011. I would try to make the case that Robert Williams is the first true center you could describe as a bona-fide NBA starter and potential game changer since then. It's February of 2023 and Williams is hopefully shedding the injury streak that would allow one to say he might stay in the rotation. That's what, 12 years between top tier starting centers? And we're not even talking about quality depth yet.

The Boston Celtics may have had a couple of the best Centers in NBA history, but there sure have not been many and not even a notable one in over a decade.

Change that and somehow keep the current young core intact, and the ride will be long and fun. Not an easy task, but #1 on the wish list.

Per Athletic:

Celtics, Nuggets, Suns and Wizards are showing interest in Jae'Sean Tate of Houston, the worst team in the league.

6'4", 230#, 6'8" wingspan, 27 years old.

28.6% from 3, 69% from the line.

I doubt this is anything more than Houston trying to generate a sense of competition between potential bidders.  I haven't seen him play, but I cannot see what role he would fill for us.

Eric Gordon, also of the Rockets, has also allegedly had exploratory inquiries about with the Celtics, Raptors and Heat.

6'3", 34 years old.  No thanks, UNLESS Pritchard is definitely gone by the deadline.  Then a veteran shooter has value, although I would still rather have Fast PP than Gordon.  If, however, Payton is going as part of a trade that will bring us another center, say, then we'll need to fill the hole his departure would create.

I would put more weight on the Gordon story than the Tate one. Houston is in full-blown Wembanyama-mode. They are in full-blown rebuild mode. Having a 34 year old makes no sense for them whatsoever, but I don't see the Gordon trade happening either unless Pritchard is gone too.

I thought so too but I am really getting worried about Rob and his durability (or lack thereof). This is getting a bit worrysome. That is the answer I had for NY Celt

Rumor du Jour says that Brad is shopping Payton Pritchard and Danilo Gallinari together as a package to increase the salary being offered, which would allow Brad to take a more expensive player back.

Per Trade Machine that duo's salary would produce a successful trade with Spurs for Poetl. Brad would have to throw in some picks but picks have no salary impact as far as the league office goes.

It would also work for Mo Bamba.

Reports: Lakers deal Westbrook, acquire Russell in 3-team deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are finalizing a deal that would send guard Russell Westbrook to the Utah Jazz and acquire guard D’Angelo Russell from Minnesota in a three-team, eight-player deal that also includes Utah sending guard Mike Conley to the Timberwolves, ESPN and The Athletic reported Wednesday night.

The Lakers would also get Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt from Utah in the eight-player swap.

Los Angeles receives:

D’Angelo Russell
Malik Beasley
Jarred Vanderbilt

Minnesota receives:

Mike Conley
Nickeil Alexander-Walker
2024 2nd-round pick swap (via WAS-MEM)
2025 2nd-round pick (via UTA)
2026 2nd round pick (via UTA)

Utah receives:

Russell Westbrook
Juan Toscano-Anderson
Damian Jones
2027 1st-round pick (via LAL)
All players involved have been notified about the trade, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Jazz are expected to buy out Westbrook once the trade is completed, per TNT’s Chris Haynes, who adds that the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers could be interested in signing the nine-time All-Star.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/35620520/toronto-raptors-get-center-jakob-poeltl-trade-spurs

Toronto Raptors get center Jakob Poeltl in trade with Spurs

The Toronto Raptors are acquiring San Antonio Spurs center Jakob Poeltl in exchange for Khem Birch, a protected 2024 first-round draft pick and two future second-round picks, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

In Poeltl, the Raptors are bringing back the center they drafted, developed and traded for Kawhi Leonard with an intention of signing him to a new contract this summer, sources told Wojnarowski.

The Spurs acquired Poeltl, 27, in a deal that sent Leonard to Toronto in 2018. Poeltl has since developed into one of the better defensive centers in the league.

Poeltl is averaging 12.1 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 26 minutes per game this season. He ranks in the top 10 this season in offensive rebound percentage and total rebound percentage and has ranked in the top five in blocks in the two seasons before this one.

He's also shooting 62.7% for his career, the sixth-best mark since he entered the league in 2016-17 (minimum 1,000 field goal attempts.)

Poeltl has one year left after this season on the rookie extension he signed back in 2020.

MY NOTE: Well, so much for that rumor. Seems like a steal for Toronto.

Bobh

Poeltl will be a FA.  The Celtics could have made a move to get him however he will be a FA next year and the Celtics are probably not wanting to spend to resign him.

So far the Celtics remain on track NOT to make a big splash.  A tweak is still something us fans would like to see and I am in the same camp as NYCelt.  A big.

According to NESN "Boston offered Payton Pritchard, Danilo Gallinari and multiple future second-round picks to the Spurs"

It seems to me that getting Poeltl would have been way more than a tweak and if Boston is that much concerned with our center depth they probably should have been willing to part with a 1st rounder.

I just do not get it. Brad please do not turn into Danny Ainge. You have been successful building out the roster while trading 1st rounders (White and Brogdon) Why stop now?

Well I guess we will see what happens today. Apparently it was not about the money. It was about draft picks. The Raptors gave up squat to get a starting center.

The Boston Celtics are acquiring big man Mike Muscala in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder ahead of Thursday's 3 p.m. ET NBA trade deadline, The Athletic's Shams Charania reports.

The Celtics will send Justin Jackson and two second-round picks to OKC in the deal, per Charania.

That is what he is.  MM can shoot the rock from deep.  37.9% career shooter from deep.  He is a stretch 4/5.

Well he does not fit Wyc’s bluster of getting. Championship this year. Quite honestly I do not trust Tatum in any big game. His 3 point percentage game in and game out is not that good. He disguises his shooting percentage in one or two games and the rest is garbage.

Mark my word this will bite us in the ass when playoffs start!

Could be. And I hate getting bitten in the ass. Or anywhere else.

Deadline expires momentarily and Brad ruined my fearless prediction of zero Celtic trades with a trade that, well, do we really even count it? I'd kinda like to have those two second rounders back.

I'm more interested in one of our local NBA guys, Thomas Bryant, getting dealt to the Nugs by the Lakers for basically nothing. That's the type of productive and fairly priced big we could use to form a center tandem with RWIII. Bryant's been a favorite of ours ever since he accidentally flattened our son with an elbow to the nose. No damage and one of his favorite stories.

With the deadline coming and going nothing of great significance happened.  We added a stretch 4/5 and moved a guy who was about as useful as a VCR.

Our core remains in place and we can still add one more low cost option to complete the roster.

The Thomas Bryant trade seems like one that we could have easily pulled off but just maybe the LAL do not want to do business with the Celtics.

Several teams made big time moves but we must remember that most of those teams were not as good as the Celtics.

Kick him in the rear on his way out but he’s got the last laugh. He has his dead brother’s music catalogue to fall back on.

He couldn't even crack the top five, but he got signed to a NBA contract, that ain't chump change.

We can say goodbye, we don't want him back, he can walk right now. He Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing.

Okay, I'll stop.

Buyout/ Trade Deadline Approaching - Page 4 Empty Re: Buyout/ Trade Deadline Approaching

Well the airwaves were abuzz today with the shiny new presents showing up in PHX.  They argued between PHX now being a contender to PHX now being the odds on fave to win it all.  I think I've heard this opera before.  If it sounds too good to be true...

Once the shine wears off of playing with the new toy maybe past the Super Bowl Sunday, PHX is going to realize that with a trade, which are designed and regulated to be pretty balanced, things may not all be well in Denmark.  All I heard about today was what they got and not much about who they gave up.  They gave up two starters plus Jae Crowder "Peas" for KD.  KD ain't going to make up those points.  KD averages 29.7.  Bridges and Johnson together combine for 17.2 and 13.9.  That's 31.1 points.  Chris Paul ain't all the sudden going to get so much better at assisting just because KD is there.  There's still only one of him.  TJ Warren comes off the bench.  PHX will not elevate him to starter.

Perk was the only one showing any common sense from all the talking heads I heard yesterday about PHX.  I know, Ktron, sensationalism in sports works just like sex on TV advertising.  It sells.  So let's compare the storylines of all the contenders.

PHX has a pretty good one.  Let's call it Virginia Cavaliers Revenge.  Virginia will probably be the only team to humiliatingly and embarrassingly lose a 1st round game as a #1 seed to a 16-seed and then turn around the next year and win it all.  Amazing.  Everyone sweeps the DAL G7 @ Home shellacking story under the rug but it's still there.  PHX has been carrying that awful burden around all season and it has been reflected in their mediocre, wobbly play to date.  Is KD enough to complete the rags to riches story.  Possibly.  It makes good sense.

DEN has had the proverbial monkey on their backs since joining the league all the way back to the David Thompson era.  They always seem to have teams with great potential but inevitably the pin falls out of the grenade.  Jokic changes everything there for them.  If anyone mentions the altitude again as an advantage, save me from punching you in the face and just do it yourself.  Does DEN finally have enough to break through and at least get to the Finals?  Well, we've seen the same song and dance over and over and over again.  10th verse same as the first.  Until we see something different, call me skeptical.  Yeah, big monkey.

MIL?  Well, they finally won another championship.  Have a very charismatic, lovable, adorable face of the league centerpiece.  Everyone's healthy and back on the court at the same time.  Just added Jae Crowder.  Ready to prove the 2nd championship for the franchise was no fluke would be big.

DAL and PHI?  Please, take a seat.  Watch and learn.

The Celtics?  Well, here we go again.  Getting back to the Finals is "assumed" given we got within two games of it last year and not much has changed with our starting line up.  It ain't broke so that didn't need fixing.  Shoring up the bench was needed to back up RWIII.  We got Brodgen.  Huge.  White continues to show how invaluable he can be and is.  Huge.  We got a back-up back-up center by the trade deadline.  Most if not all of us on this site say we still need one or two more pieces off the scrap pile now to complete the set.  We've got enough to win it all.  That's what Boston management said to the NBA yesterday.  This is our championship to lose.

All the storylines above are plausible and viable.  The most dramatic is the PHX initially.  I don't remember the competition vs. the Celtics being this tight in the 80's.  There was PHI in the East, maybe the Hawks with Dominique and Doc.  That's all I remember.  And while they would challenge us, mainly PHI, it was a given we were going to be in the Finals often.  And we did.

With this current NBA, everything is packed in. Pressure is really on us to win it this year.  PHX just pushed all-in.  But they've got problems.  They have no bench.  Don't hear much about defense either.  Just scoring.  Seen this movie before as well.  Never ends well.  And as the playoffs wear on, their wheels make come off sooner that last season's result if they don't address that immediately.

Anyway, just some thoughts.
