DBoss,

Explanation provided in greater detail on the Free Agency Discussion thread.   This thread is for actual happenings.   Queta’s option was declined.  Period.  What COULD happen next is speculated upon elsewhere.

Kevin Love has declined his $4M Player Option.

Per Woj, both sides are "enthusiastic" about negotiating a new contract in free agency.

Sounds like Sam and, hopefully, Queta. Seems to be a lot of similar contract jockeying going on.

Memphis is declining Luke Kennard's $14.9M option to negotiate a long-term one.

Seeing so many other teams do this makes me feel better about Brad declining Queta.

Orlando is declining Joe Ingles' option, both sides also expected to negotiate long-term deal in a week.  Joe will be 37 when next season begins.  Why sign a 37 year old to a multi-year contract?  He's not Lebron.

Interesting that so many teams are looking for long-term salary predictability over short-term flexibility.  I wonder what they know about the future of the salary cap that we don't.

For some additional back story, the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is a 7 year deal that began in 2023 and runs through 2029 - 2030.  5 more years.  Sign some 3-4 year deals, get a feel for what could come a year or two in advance and then start strategizing how best to position yourself best.

Who’s going to want him, he’s perpetually injured and is on wrong side of 30?

Once he gets to the point where getting a vet minimum deal is the only option if he still wants to play.

That’s all he’ll get, we all wanted him to succeed when he was with us, but the last 2 years he couldn’t make it in one piece for the playoffs. Last year he only played 39 games, what GM is gonna stick his neck out to an owner to sign him? That’s how GM’s lose their jobs. Brilliant move including him at the right time in the Jrue Holiday deal, which in hindsight looks like another heist of Aingeian proportions executed by Bad Brad.

Knicks opt OUT of extending a $6.8M Qualifying Offer to Precious Achiuwa.  They haven't ruled out signing him later after they've resolved their negotiations with Bridges.  If Precious accepted the QO quickly it would have affected their hard salary cap.

Achiuwa is now an UFA.

Celtics re-sign reserve center to multi-year contract

Published: Jun. 30, 2024, 7:22 p.m.

By Brian Robb | brobb@masslive.com

The Celtics continue to bolster their front court depth at the start of free agency on Sunday night. A league source confirmed to MassLive that Boston has agreed to a multi-year contract with Neemias Queta a mere hour after retaining Luke Kornet. Shams Charania of Stadium was first to report Queta’s new deal.

The Celtics turned down a team option for Queta on Saturday, making him a restricted free agent on the open market on Sunday night. MassLive reported on Saturday that the Celtics had strong interest in retaining Queta
despite turning down the option and now get the ability to secure his services on a long-term deal.

Queta appeared in 28 games with Boston last year, posting career-highs across the board averaging 5.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 11.9 minutes per game. The Celtics landed Queta initially back in August on a two-way deal after Sacramento waived him. Queta provided valuable minutes off the bench on nights when Al Horford and/or Kristaps Porzingis weren’t available, ultimately earning a promotion to the 15-man roster in April.

With Kornet and Queta signed, the Celtics now have 13 players under contract. Kornet inked a one-year deal with the Celtics on Sunday night. Queta’s deal is for multiple years but is unlikely to be fully guaranteed, according to a source. Here’s a closer look at the Celtics’ current roster situation after the start of free agency:

Celtics 2024-25 projected payroll

Jaylen Brown: $49.7 million

Jayson Tatum: $34.9 million

Jrue Holiday: $30 million

Kristaps Porzingis: $29.2 million

Derrick White: $19.6 million

Al Horford: $9.5 million

Payton Pritchard: $6.7 million

Jaden Springer: $4 million

Luke Kornet: $?? million

Baylor Scheierman: $2.5 million

Neemias Queta: $2.2 million

Sam Hauser: $2.1 million

Jordan Walsh: $1.9 million

REMAINING FREE AGENTS

Oshae Brissett, Xavier Tillman, Svi Mykhailiuk, JD Davison, Drew Peterson (restricted)

BobH, do you think he’d consider ring chasing here in Beantown? The bigger question, do we want/need him? PP the master of the end of quarter three would possibly lose minutes if we brought CP3 on board.

Bobh with 13 under contract I can see one more move and I do hope it will be Tillman.  Then Boston can keep an open roster spot until Brad decides it is trying to fill it.

Will,

I agree with DBoss, he's not coming and we don't need him.

CAVEAT:  IF, FOR SOME REASON, Brad feels that Derrick's extension demands aren't near what we can pay then bringing CP3 in anticipation of a Derrick White trade makes some sense.  My expectation is that Derrick will get extended and, therefore, CP3 is unnecessary.

In fact, even as I post this, Chris Paul signs with San Antonio.

Dboss, BobH, good answer. By the end of the season PP had pretty much became my favorite player on the team. Would hate to see him lose minutes to a ring chasing carpetbagger. CP3, the banana boat is awaiting you.

CP3 will be taking his banana boat down the San Antonio River to the tune of 11 million dollars for one year.

That's funny!

And I agree with you regarding PP.

The Celtics have a roster that fits together so well. It really took years to finally get it right.

Extensions for both D White and JT are coming. Brad has the team that he wants to move forward with. Sam may not get an extension immediately but Brad dispelled any notion that he is not in their long term plans. I still think that they can get something done before the season starts.

Will Springer stick? Brissette is a F/A, I assume he will be gone. It will be interesting to see what Brad does. Leave that seat at the end for the right fit? Or fill it?

Rumor has it that Paul George is going to sign with the Sixers.  Hard to believe that Lawrence Frank would resign fat boy Harden instead of keeping George.  It really makes no sense to me.

Anyways, the Clips window is officially closed at a time when a sparkling new state of the arts arena if ready to open and they have a new Logo.

The Clippers need to do a massive rebuild and it needs to start with selling off all of those relics.  It will probably take yet another year of coming up short for them to get the message.

Rosalie, Springer is still under contract and at 21 years old he has room to grow. Brissette is gone. He could have opted in. He was looking for a bigger payday. However on the Celtics there was no real opportunity for him aside from some spot minutes. I do hope that he lands somewhere with a nice paycheck and more minutes available. His best bet may be to join a team on the rebuild.
